joining us now is former los angeles county sheriff alex villanueva. sheriff, thank you for joining us again. and as you look at all of these scenes, what's the what's the first thing that that comes to mind? >> one just the sheer humanity, though, you know, so many people who have lost their homes. i mean, we're talking the count is going to be in the hundreds at a minimum of homes lost. and thankfully we have no fatalities. and we have some early indications of some injuries, but they at least appear to be minor at this point. and just that it's a life changing event for so many people. so our hearts go out to everyone impacted by this. >> you know, we heard former mayoral candidate rick caruso talking earlier. he's losing some of his properties. and he said that there is no there was no water in palisades in order to fight the fires. can you talk a little bit more about that as well as mitigation, things that need to be put in place in order to prevent something like this in the future? >> well, definitely the capacity of the water system to deliver

let's go ahead and bring in former los angeles county sheriff alex villanueva. sheriff villanueva, thank you for joining us again. quickly. we are hearing that there is now a possibly a third fire, the sylmar fire, and there are some evacuations in place for that. can you tell us anything about that? >> yes, that's about where the 210 meets the five freeway north northwest corner of la county. and that adds to the to the misery, so to speak, because you have the eaton canyon fire, which is due east of this palisades fire. so you have three fires going now and you have the weather conditions. the topography is there, and all the conditions are right for making a very long night for our first responders. >> right now, with this third fire now now occurring, what are first responders doing at this point or what can they do? i mean, you've got three different areas. we heard earlier that they were sending out calls to anyone and everyone with firefighting experience that could maybe just come in and start helping. >> yeah, this is the one. the problem is bigger than

. >> laura: joining me now alex villanueva, former sheriffl of l.a.nty.fr sheriff, theie police are alreay overwhelmed as it is. friends of minmee in encinoy lo sending while videos in a military lockdown there but they are actually glad about that because they saw a lot of looters in the neighborhood. how should they combat this looting? >> well, one thing is getting the national guard involved to free up the checkpoints and the parameters around the evacuations is one thing. then you got to get on enforcement to patrol the perimeters into the traffic stops and look at suspicious people. doing that an enforcementy activity, you start discoveringr three looters. o unfortunately, a lot more cutaway than the ones that gotcr arrested because of the size oft looting has not been accurately reported. it is substantial and the lack of law enforcement personnel on the ground is very noticeable. >> laura: friends of mine, and again, encino hills, toward studiod city, they are textinge literally saying we saw looterss in our neighborhood about three hours ago.

but right now we want to bring in former los angeles county sheriff alex villanueva. for joining us. alex. what are you thinking as you see these just terrible, devastating scenes that we've been watching all day unfold? >> well, my you know, my heart breaks for everyone who's being impacted by this. thankfully, we've not heard of a loss of life yet, but the scar this is going to leave is going to be very lasting. it's going to be a lot bigger when the sun comes up tomorrow morning. people are going to understand the sheer scope of the devastation and just the movement of people out of harm's way. and for all the first responders, the fire, law enforcement and getting people out of the way. and this is it's going to end when nature says it's over. because right now, man can do very little to put a brunt on this thing. >> from a law enforcement perspective, first responders, what are they going to be trying to do at first light tomorrow? >> well, one is, you know, they have the mandatory evacuation zone. and that mandatory evacuation zone now has to be safeguarded for

let's go ahead and go to former sheriff alex villanueva for more on this. and i know, sheriff, you've been watching this all night. and we talked about earlier when we heard from a businessman that there is no water in palisades, that that was affecting firefighters efforts greatly. >> yes, definitely. i mean, that's your number one tool. if you don't have it, you're pretty much can't do anything but watch. and we hate to think that the system was that vulnerable to a fire to take out our fire pressure and our hydrants. so if anybody thinks that they're going to use their little hoses, please don't leave that for the professional, for the firefighters. keep all your water off so we preserve whatever pressure we have in the lines to feed our fire hydrants. >> you know, we've been talking about preparedness all night. all morning. should i say, what should people that are facing having to evacuate quickly. what should they be putting together right now to make sure they're prepared? >> well, you got to prioritize. you got to focus on people, on pets and presc
