younger age groups. the governor's order comes after some bay area school districts have already approved mandates of their own. welcome everyone this afternoon to the forearm heather holmes. i'm alex savage, governor newsom and the state weighed in on a debate that's been playing out all across this country. he made the announcement in san francisco this morning. our political reporter greg lee was there for the announcement. he joins us now live in the studio to explain when this mandate could go into effect. greg looks good afternoon. the short answer is likely the new school year but potentially as early as january. california's again taking a step before the rest of the nation, governor newsom said today this is a way to keep students safe and physically in the classroom. california will become the first state in the nation to mandate covid-19 vaccinations for all eligible students in grades k through 12 governor newsome's order adds covid-19 to the list of shots. students need to attend school in person to add to that list. the vaccination for covid-19. we intend to do that. once the fda as fully approved the vaccine, which will give us time to work with districts, the mandat
