fox 5's alexandra limon with the story. >> reporter: i spoke to one of the two firefighters who is now suspended after driving an 18-month-old little girl to the hospital in their fire engine. he said he felt like it was a matter of life or death and that's why they chose to drive the baby to the hospital instead of waiting for an ambulance. now the two men are suspended. the child's father says his daughter was having a seizure. he pulled into a mcdonald's and called 911. he says waiting for help felt like an eternity. but then the two volunteer firefighters arrived. >> when i exited the fire truck, i was the i exited the fire truck, the gentleman handed me his child. at that point she was completely limp and flaccid. i turned around and looked at my driver and without any hesitation i said we're going to the hospital. >> reporter: the little girl is okay and they believe it was thanks to the firefighter's quick action. the child's father released this statement that says in part, my wife and i feel terrible for the fallout that has happened to these two gentlemen. they simply had the

fox 5's alexandra limon is live tonight with more. alex? >> reporter: and today a spokesperson with the dc fire on wednesday, the day the shooting happened, the department received a high volume of calls for service and he says that's part of the problem and why it took so long for an ambulance to arrive at the scene of the shooting. for more than 20 minutes you can hear dispatch go back and forth with an ambulance en route to southeast dc, called to this scene, where a man shot multiple times lay critically injured in the street. during the exchange there's no indication of when the ambulance actually arrives. >> the ambulance ain't come until like almost an hour. >> reporter: we asked dc fire why it took so long for such a seriously injured victim to get help. a spokesperson for the department said in a statement, at the time this incident was dispatched, the closest available transport unit was nearly 8 miles paramedics arrived on scene within 4 minutes and began treating the patient immediately. a closer transport unit became available

alexandra limon tonight live in fredricksburg with more on this story. >> reporter: well, to be honest, it is hard to believe this is happening. last saturday a family was having lunch at mcdonald's and the family had to call 911 because their 18-month-old daughter appeared to be having a seizure. an engine responded. they were the first to arrive. and when they got there they said the child looked like she was in very serious condition, so the two firefighters decided to jump into action and take the child to the hospital right away. and because of those actions the two firefighters have been suspended. the issue is that they should have technically waited for an ambulance to arrive to take that child to the hospital. james kelly and he tells me it was a matter of life or death and he did not feel he had the time to wait. he in fact tried to get ahold of an ambulance and he wasn't sure how long they would take to get there. here's what he told me. >> when i exited the fire truck i was the officer in charge. the gentleman handed me his child. at that point she was completely limp and f
