cnn meteorologist alexandra steele is tracking the weather for us this morning. alexandra, what about the rain, is it coming to l.a.? >> it's coming but not much. we are going to see big time improving for the fire fighting efforts. we're seeing good news and bad news. let me delineate the day. we're seeing hot, dry, strong offshore winds we've seen have now changed direction, cooler, more humid onshore flow bringing the moisture in off the watt sore that is good news. we've got the increased humidity, change in the wind direction and we have some rain showers. again, sunday through tuesday. best chance for the rain really coming on monday. already so with the showers, only going to bring some very light rain so places like los angeles have only had about under two inches of rain this entire year. while places elsewhere around the country have had two inches of rain in two days so poultry amounts of rain and 17% of the snowpack so incredibly dry conditions. so thundershowers they could see will produce sop lightning and that could spark a fire with the tinder dry

let's find out more from cnn meteorologist, alexandra steele. any rain heading to southern california? >> you know, improving conditions dramatically. kind of a 180-degree move with this. good news, but there is always the caveat of bad news. and let me delineate it for you. the good news is the hot, offshore winds we have seen. temperatures 93 degrees. they should be in the 60s and 70s. so that's all coming down. the increase in humidity, we have seen the wind shift to a cooler and humid onshore wind bringing in the moisture from the water which is what we need. we are expecting rain showers light in nature but the timeline for them is sunday through tuesday. and sunday less so and the odds go up. but the bad news is, "a," the rain will be light in nature, but "b" we could see thundershowers with that rain and we could see lightning and you don't want lightning in the dry tender that could spark another fire. within the thunderstorms and thundershowers we could have spiraling and shifting winds and the shifting winds has been one of the most di

let's go to alexandra steele. >> we are going to see good news and bad news. and what we have seen this temperatures in the 90s, and temperatures coming down into the 70s now and now we will see a more humid onshore flow. and also possible rain showers in the forecast, sunday through tuesday. and also the bad news, the showers we will see will be light. also, the potential for thundershowers, and the lightning could spark new fires, and then also shifting winds and the swirling winds have been a problem for firefighters. forecast today out in the 90s, and that's good news, and 75 degrees. and tomorrow, highs only in the 60s, so much cooler than we have seen. higher humidity, and 30% chance for rain. it's late sunday into monday. monday morning, here you go, this is kind of the bullseye. yes, it's rain. yes, it's light. but certainly anything will be good. so the best chance for rain is monday morning, and then you can see kind of some scattered rain showers for monday into tuesday. that's kind of how it's shaping up. good news and bad news on the whole, incred

let's bring in cnn meteorologist alexandra steele from the cnn weather center. on one end of the country, wildfires on the other end. give us some relief. is there any? >>> there's relief on both fronts. this is the catalyst for change. this area of low pressure right here in california. it's amazing how the change of weather patterns, so dynamically affecting this fire fight. now 60% contained and out of control two days ago. courtesy of this area of low pressure. what it's bringing a change in the wind direction, calmer winds, a cooldown from 92 degrees. 90s, 20 degrees above average, thursday and friday. temperatures now in the 60s. now a return to this normal, damp, cool water coming off -- this wind coming off the water importing that marine layer and the moisture laden atmosphere that's made all the difference. rain tonight, chance for showers monday and tuesday, temperatures dramatically changed. sort of part and parcel to fixing and quelling this fire. the moisture content, the lower humidity, and, of course, the rain. here's what we're seeing now. here'

firefighters -- we'll check in with alexandra steele first and then we'll get to stephanie. can you tell us certainly they are in desperate need of some rain. how is it looking for them? >> certainly things are looking much better. no question about that. what we've seen just incredible amounts of very strong wind. we're going to see a big change coming. that is the good news. here's a look at what it looks like right now. we have clear skies and 57 degrees. humidity is up. that is the good news. and the winds are down. look at that. 5-mile-per-hour winds. much less than we've seen. the good news, those very hot, strong, dry offshore winds now have switched direction and we have an onshore flow. all the moisture from the water is being brought inland. that's good news. rain showers between sunday and tuesday. best chance for any rain is really on monday. not a lot of rain mind you but it's more of the change in the wind direction and increasing humidity that will change dynamics of the weather pattern. bad news rain will be light and the thundershowers we could see could hav

let's go to alexandra steele in the weather center. how are things now?t, compared to where they're going to go. yesterday we saw about 17 or so tornadoes, some may be duplicates. somewhere between about 14 and 20. here's where they were, as expected in nebraska. also here just west of wichita and kansas. also, baseball-sized hail, 70-mile-per-hour wind gusts. expecting more of the same today. expecting the tornadoes to be more numerous though in numbers. so here's the current radar picture. wherever you are from minneapolis to maryland to macon, georgia, it's a wet day. you can see right now those thunderstorms are moving north and northeast. no severe though as of yet. no tornado watches, no tornado warnings. we have severe thunderstorm warnings, but nothing tornadic yet. but all the ingredients are there. we have this dip in the jet stream advancing east, check one. we have the frontal lines, also the dry line where the masses are converging, we see that spin accelerate. also of course ample moisture. the gulf we say open for business. so kind of all t
