i'm jackie bensen reporting live in alexandria. back to you. >>> investigators tell us undercover agents had been watching him for months. >> rigthe lives on windham circn alexandria. jane watrel was the only reporter who was able to get access to that complex and she's live there with reaction from the neighbors. >> reporter: it's been a scary day for neighbors. they've been rattled about what's been happening right here in their neighborhood. many of them knew who el khalifi was. they said he wasn't particularly friendly, but never thought this homegrown terror was going on. as jackie said, the 29-year-old is facing life in prison after being arrested in an undercover sting operation. that happened at noon on capitol hill. after that, agents came here to alexandria to start searching his condo. according to the charging documents, we are learning more about this. the alexandria resident wanted to blow himself up and they say "he believed he was working with al qaeda. he devised the plot, the target, and the methods all on his own

delia goncalves is live in alexandria with the story. delia, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. let's start with the traffic since it's a big issue here in northern virginia. portions of seminary road, surrounding temple beth el will be shut down in just a matter of a few hours beginning at 9:00 a.m. till 4:00 p.m. today. area schools even will dismiss around noontime today. get this. 2,000 people are expected to attend and 200 fire vehicles will all come here to this area to attend today's sfs. 33 -- today's services. 33-year-old josh weissman, a decorated paramedic is the first member of the alexandria fire department to die in the line of duty in a century. last week he fell 30 feet off the 395 overpass by glebe road. firefighters now want that large gap in between the guardrail separating those two spans of the bridge to be covered with a chain link fence to prevent someone else from falling through. weissman's brother says it is those same firefighters who have helped the family cope through this massive unthinkable tragedy. >

peggy fox is live in alexandria with more. peggy. >> reporter: the funeral begins in an hour at 1:00 at temple bethel here on seminary road. the procession has been going on for the past hour and we saw casket, we saw procession of hundreds of alexandria firefighters and paramedics and their equipment coming in. the firetrucks, the ambulances. we saw flags being raised. they have closed down seminary road here for this procession. this huge, huge american flag flying up above as the procession has been going underneath. many people here paying their respects, saluting as the casket goes by. joshua weissman was 33 years old when he died in a freak accident, trying to save someone he thought was in danger in a burning vehicle on i-395 last wednesday night. it was raining, he was jumping over one jersey wall to another. and there was a drop 30 feet down and he fell between the two bridges and died several days later. we have his family here to pay their respects, of course, and many firefighters filling in for the alexandria fire

this is a serious loss for the alexandria fire and ems fire department. not just because they're losing a player but he was an extreme team player. h was a seven-year veteran of the alexandria fire department and his duties included training and accepting new recruits in the field. last night there was a large krout outside the everybodierly wheatly funeral home in alexandria as hundreds of friends, colleagues, and loved ones gathered to say good-bye to mr. weissman. he fell 20 feet off of the 395 yoef pass into the creek bed of 4 mile run in shirlington. he suffered a severe head injury and died the following day. weissman's brother made this statement last night. >> if it's possible to take anything positive out of something so tragic, it would be to be thankful for those they know and those they don't. all of those should be thankful for those like him. >> reporter: thousands are expected to apeer for the funeral services. closures will begin at 10:00 in the morning and go until 4:30 p.m. it will include janneys lane, van dorn, braddock and king street
