. >> right now, an intense manhunt is under way in alexandria as the police searched for a gunman who walked up to a house and shot two women. the police don't know if he chose the victims at ran doll. -- at random. up with woman died of her injuries, and jackie bensen is live outside of the police headquarters in alexandria where it is an active investigation, and the residents are being told to take safety precautions? >> they are. and right now, a helicopter is overhead in the neighborhood searching for signs of the suspect, and short time ago here at the police headquarters we heard from the alexandria police chief earl cook and alexandria mayor bi mayor, and they updated us on the shooting, and the investigators have not determined whether he knocked on the door and then opened fire on the yohomeowner's daughter and care giver. both men caution it is important for the residents to use care in opening up their door and going about the activities, because so little is known right now about the motive for this murder. >> we currently have no evidence linking this to any other crime,

strange story and took place at the home of a family who has been prominent and well respected in the alexandria community for decades. this is with what we know at this point. people in this quiet residential neighborhood who are alarmed to see the police officers descend on this area early this morning for two adult women who were shot when they answered the d r door. one woman was wounded to the arm and she managed to run to the neighbor's house and she dialed 911. the woman inside of the house is described critical condition, and that is the second person shot. we are told that there is believed to have been a third person in the house, an elderly woman, and a witness tells me that he saw that woman after the shooting, and she was physically unharmed and several schools and two churches were placed on a lockdown briefly while the police searched for the sus is pekt. he is described at this point as a white man with gray hair and a short beard who was seen walking in the area by neighbors immediately after this shooting. now, coming up, we expect to hear from alexandria's police chief, and he

the killer in another recent murder case in alexandria. former arlington county sheriff's deputy craig patton -- wells this one of the cases is headed to prison. a judge handed down a six year sentence to patterson. a jury convicted him of voluntary manslaughter in december. he shot and killed julian dawkins last may after the two got into a fight in dawkins' alexandria neighborhood. patterson who's claiming self- defense did offer his condolences to the family but didn't apologize for killing him. >>> and no word yet whether a body found yesterday in goochland, county virginia is that of a missing police captain. 45-year-old kevin quick disappeared last friday. he works for the police department in waynes bro which is west of charlottesville. his stolen toyota 4 runner was recovered monday. two people arrested tuesday in alexandria are charged with stealing that suv. >>> well, it looks like we will not be seeing all of the court papers in the corruption case against bob mcdonnell. the u.s. district judge has issued an order restricting th

tonight the hundred for a killer, a gunman who knocked on a door in alexandria and shot to death a 59-year-old music teacher and wounded her care giver. >> it happened today at a home in the 2400 block of ridge road drive and our mola lenghi is on the scene. why did this happen? >> reporter: police are trying to answer that very question. no motive has been determined yet. police are still on scene trying to investigate what happened in what is typically a very quiet safe alexandria neighborhood. neighbors say it is scary to think exactly how this murder happened. >> the suspect knocked on the door and shot the victims when they answered. >> reporter: killing 59-year- old ruthanne lodato who friends and neighbors say lived here her entire life. a caretaker was also shot and suffered none life threatening injuries. a third apparently -- nonlife threatening injuries. a third person at the home was unharmed. >> you can't help but wonder. >> reporter: the randomness has neighbors shaken, the shooter who they describe as an elderly balding white male with gray hair and full beard, did not

police don't know if her killing is related to two other unsolved murders in alexandria. the transportation expert, ron kirby, was killed back in november and nancy dunning, the wife of a former alexandria sheriff, she was killed back in 2003. here's the problem left by this week's heavy snowfall for metro bus riders. the snow is still high at a lot of bus stops in the area. there is no path from the stop to the bus, except to climb over a mound of snow. that seems to be a problem for the elderly and some disabled passengers. we called metro today and told that each jurisdiction is responsible for clearing the walkways and bus stops. the exceptions are metro bus, which metro is responsible for. metro says those bays have been cleared. >> well, another cold night, what about the rest of the weekend? let's go to first alert meteorologist, erica groh. >> not only is it cold out there, but it's windy in the wake of this clipper system. you can see it pulling away. it gathered more strength as it made its way out of the d.c. metro. this is a six hour loop. you can see we have
