alexis christoforous reports. this is more than a psychological milestone, right? >> reporter: it is a nice round number, grace, that investors large and small can sort of wrap their heads around. it is an important psychologically important milestone for this market and it shows how resilient the stock market can be. in may of 2008 is the last time we saw the dow cross 13,000. of course, after that, just four months later, lehman brothers collapsed, the financial crisis ensued and so did the great recession. so this is a great symbol this number of 13,000 because it shows that we were able to lift ourselves out of that and are now at a level we were before the financial crisis. >> and alexis, as for the bailout for greece, this has been a very big deal so far. and it's really been weighing the market down for months now. >> reporter: it has. and, you know, at least for today, there's some optimism. greece has apparently gotten a bailout in return for tough cost cutting measures. because of that the market rallied but hasn't been able to hold on to the gains. we st

alexis christoforous tells us what that means for those struggling to keep their homes. >> reporter: the settlement forces the banks to offer help to struggling homeowners. five banks agreed to a deal worth at least $25 billion. >> this agreement reflects our commitment to ensure justice and recover losses for victims of wreckless and abusive mortgage practices. >> reporter: the agreement stems from investigations into the foreclosures that followed the burst of the housing bubble. to speed up evictions workers sometimes signed documents they had not read or faked signatures, a process known as robo signing. the deal is the broadest plan so far to help borrowers underwater on their loans. there is also money in the deal for people who have already lost their homes. about $1.5 billion will go to borrowers who went through foreclosure between september 2008 and the end of last year. that will cover 750,000 people, who will receive checks for up to $2000 each. >> we are using this opportunity to fix a broken system. and to lay the ground work for a better future. >> reporter: the deal i
