alfonso david, and ebony bell. glad to have all of you with us. dominique, i love your take on the two movements merging so tangibly and suddenly. why now? >> it's extremely important for this to happen right now, because we have a lot of black trans women being murdered. 60 to 70 to 80 brutal, horrible murders. we as trans people rally with everyone. and we are always there with black lives matter. from most of the murders that have happened, i've known my sisters to go out and rally. and while we're rallying, we're also being targeted. we stand up for people that won't stand up for us. for us to come together, it means we're really seeing that it's about equality for all. not just for everyone else to get a pass or to get the privilege that others have. >> alfonso, this is not the first time that there has been visible overlap between these movements. how did we get to where we are right now in 2020? >> well, as we think about 2020, we are seeing this country at an inflection point. we're grappling with issues of racial strife that we've been gr

alfonso david, president of the human rights campaign.r being on this morning. >> you know, mika, earlier this morning, we played a clip of my friend and, boy, just a great civil rights hero, john lewis. john said yesterday, i say to all americans not to give up. not to get lost in the seas of despair but to keep the faith. and it's going to work out. we must help it in working out by doing good. and being called to be true to the calls of love, peace and nonviolence. and it is so important that as we move forward today, we look at all the inspiring marches out there. all of the people. all of the american citizens, black and white. hispanic, asian americans of all races who are stepping forward and trying to make a difference in their country, and they're doing it the right way. they're doing it peacefully. they're doing it with their neighbors. they're doing it with their friends. they're doing it with their children. they're doing it to protect the lives of others. and some of their own family members. that is so important to remember.

joining us now president of the human rights campaign alfonso david and president and chief executivefficer of the national constitution center jeffrey rosen. good morning, it's great to have you both with us. alfonso let me begin with you. they're calling this a landmark decision, it is, a long-time coming since 1964 civil rights act. what does this mean to you, to the lgbtq community and what does it mean to america? >> thank you so much, willie. the united states supreme court yesterday stood on the right side of history. when it declared a -- >> all right. mika, it sounds like we've lost alfonso's audio here. >> absolutely. we can try and adjust that. these are always a little tough. there were other surprises from the court. ten appeals that looked to broaden the second amendment right to include owning a semiautomatic rifle and carrying a handgun in public were denied argument. one was a challenge to a new jersey law that requires a person to show a justifiable need in order to obtain a gun permit. in their decent, justice clarence thomas and brett kavanaugh called the standard
