father alfred is one of our programs. a 12-month recovery program for men to the gentleman who byrd as bad in that program also help us out in the dining room. some of them do blessings. -- they also help us out in the dining room. they do blessings and some have gone on to work in the area restaurants. they also serve an important symbol for our guests. because some of the gentleman in father alfred's center stood in line for a while, and now they are in a recovery program and rebuilding their lives. for some of our guests to continue to struggle in their addictive illnesses, when they see these gentlemen in the dining room, it gives them a little ray of hope and the sense that they can also take the first brave step and start anew. joining us today is one of our father alfred said the participants who has been volunteering. he will say a few words. please help me in welcoming keith. these alfred waud sketches are wonderful. alfred and william waud of course. i don't know where the originals are but there are many, many copies at the library of congress. we're going to hear from ellsworth later. but i wanted to tell about him in the white house. he actually went from illinois as i'm sure you know with the lincoln family. and he was a very precocious character and young, and they thought he was wonderful. and he moved into the white house with the lincolns. and he shared a room with robert todd lincoln in the family quarters upstairs. so his death in alexandria across the river when he was shot down, taking the flat down from the hotel, was a horrible personal tragedy for the family as well as the loss of the first soldier of note of the union army in the civil war. his body was brought back to the white house, and the funeral was held in the east room with a garland of flowers on the coffin made by mrs. lincoln. so he was one of the early characters of the white house story who was gone very soon. mrs. lincoln, always controversial, mrs. l
