the algerian military launched the rescue operation yesterday without any american help despite the pentagon's offer to assist. algeria state's news service reported that 100 of the hostages are flee. two americans managed to escape but today, the state department reports there are still american hostages. no word on the exact number or their condition. today marks three days since the militants stormed the facility near the libyan border. algerian state television reporting that it is pay back letting french jets use their airspace to attack militants in mali. hillary clinton just spoke to the algerian prime minister. what did she say about that conversation? >> she just spoke at the state department. she said that the hostages are still in danger. it is an ongoing situation. there was not a lot of clarity yesterday about what was happening at the facility but it is still ongoing. she also said she offered more counterterrorism help to the al swreerians, help they have already provided to the algerians suggesting there is help within the country, but that is something that the algerians have rebuffed. >> i spoke with the algerian

state. margaret brennan, cbs news, washington. >>> well there was a report this morning between the linch to the attack in libya and the seegs in algeria. algerian officials told "the new york times" that several egyptian militants who took part in the september attack in benghazi were also involved in the hostage crisis in eastern algeria. they say the militants were killed during the assault. the attack to the gas plant was connected to neighboring city mali. they said they attacked due to the crackdown on the algerian fighter jets there. elizabeth palmer has that part of the story very when we arrived at the main military airfield, wi found u.s. transport planes had already started to land. five in all, bringing in more than a hundred tons of gear and soldiers from a military base in france. the fighter planes, armored vehicles, helicopters, they're all french, and so are the soldiers. 2,800 french boots on the ground here in mali but behind the scenes this is an international effort and war very few saw coming. the u.s. air force role is critical. >> it's a great dynamic situation, so we don't really have a full handle on that yet, but we ex

algerian gas plant. there are wlikting reports about the state of the hostage crisis. joining me now nbc news chief pentagon correspondent jim miklacevski. >> what is the pentagon telling you and leon panetta was travel and has been talking to reporters along the way, but do we know more about exactly what happened in this shoot-out? >> u.s. officials all along have said the details are murky, and here's what we know and what we don't know. about seven hours almost 24 hours after the hostages were taken by those armed militants, al qaeda-linked militants at that bp malgas plant there in algeria, the algerian military launched what was supposed to be a hostage rescue operation. as we understand it, it was very violent. the algerians are reporting that 25 hostages, either were freed or escaped, and as many as six hostages were killed. now, both british and u.s. officials say they were not informed in advance that the algerian military was going to launch this hostage rescue attempt, and, in fact, some officials are somewhat upset over that fact, but they understand and some officials have ackno
