good morning, kyung. >> reporter: good morning, ali. it's not just sony but it is a bad day in a lot of boardrooms and many of the electronics companies here in japan. we saw a lot of reporting of the quarter from april to june. sony posted a loss of 191 million u.s. dollars. panasonic, down 390 million. sharp down 630 million and nintendo says they lost in that quarter 327 million u.s. dollars. why? well, partially because of the march 11th earthquake. they are still trying to recover from the poor sales and the supply problems. the other theme we keep seeing over and over again from these electronics companies is the currency problem. the u.s. dollar is sinking. sinking very rapidly in these last six weeks. u.s. manufacturers, just like japanese manufacturers all operate on the u.s. dollar. and so when japanese manufacturers then have to repatriate these funds here, they lose if the dollar is sinking and the yen is rising. what is pushing the dollar down is all of that u.s. debt ceiling talk, the uncertainty, the world markets are in

ali rasmus joins us live from san francisco. ali. >> reporter: we're at fort mason in san francisco, where organizers are packing up just half an hour ago we watched as a huge group of people, 2,000 men and women, began the san francisco avon walk for breast cancer. when 2,000 people signed up for the walk, each raised $1800. so the total amount this group participating raised today is about $4 million and that money will go towards breast cancer reach and treatment. the program director series the majority of that money goes to northern california hospitals, non-profits and health organizations. it's an important part of what they do is making sure that the money people spend work so hard to raise goes and stays in their local communities. the women participating in the walk have some incredible stories. we talked to a lot of them. some had some very personal reasons they're participating. >> my sister died 11 years ago and i said would you start walking for her. and i started that next year, and i didn't know this, but i had b

ali, i want to start with you. what could default mean to our retirement savings and what if anything can we do about it? >> well, look, think about it as a chance of a hurricane hitting you. can't stop the hurricane, but you can take a few steps to protect yourself in case it does hit. look, i don't think people should take drastic steps at the moment but there may come a time in the next few days where markets start to react fairly violently to the idea that a debt agreement has not been reached. i think when people want to start dealing with their 401(k) and their investments, a lot of people don't deal with it regularly so you should at least know where it is. if you use an advisor, have the conversation today, not on friday or monday. know how to log into your 401(k), make sure you're not overexposed to stocks more than you should be. i don't think you should be downsizing your holdings at the moment. remember that if there is a debt crisis, if we end up not doing this, the stocks that will do the best, the co
