i'm ali velshi in joplin, missouri. in front of a church that starts over there behind the camera and extends all the way over here to the library of the church, a classroom, and goes all the way over there behind me. this whole area, we're on a hill, was a church that has just been destroyed. we're in the midst of this area in joplin destroyed. the only building that's still standing in very, very badly damaged is that medical center that we have been showing you for the last couple of days in which a number of patients died. we've been looking at all this, we've been surveying this all from the ground, but yesterday i had a chance to get up on a u.s. army black hawk and take a look around the damaged area. it's quite remarkable. let me give you a sense of the damage around here. it's about three quarters of a mile wide and about six miles long and doesn't have the characteristic, you know, some of the houses are destroyed or others are not. the tornado wrecked everything in its path and most of those houses are just s

ali velshi is at the waffle house where they're getting word a tornado may have touched down. are you hearing? >> reporter: we had been at the site in the middle of joplin near where you were. and it had been sort of evacuated, because this electrical storm was moving in. we moved to the last place where we had seen people, which was the waffle house. as we approached a full restaurant, which is where everybody was, emptied out, people started moving into the back of the restaurant because they were getting texts and messages there had been a tornado -- the atmospheric pressure indicated it was likely to happen. an emergency worker then told me he had a confirmation of a tornado nearby, and really activity on the street just suddenly dropped. people started heading indoors. i'm right on the edge of interstate 44 right now at joplin. and it's dropped dramatically. the skis, as you can see, are lighting up with a good deal of electrical activity. we've gone across the road to a marriott hotel where they have a shelter. we're not in it, but we are nearby in the event we need to ge

. >>> chief business correspondent, ali velshi, joins us now. oh, this hurts. >> it does hurt, because housing is so much of some people's assets. we need housing prices to solidify. it is a study of 20 major metropolitan areas. a fairly thundershower rorough . housing prices, existing homes, the price dropped 4.2% in the first quars tter. it confirmed some people's view of a possible double-tip idip i housing. a year ago, we had that first-time home buyer's credit. we continue to have foreclosures until we are done with these large numbers of foreclosures, it is going to keep downward pressure on houses. a lot of houses out there. for some people, what this means is that housing has become more affordable. between sub 5% mortgage rates and continuing decreases in housing prices, there are some people that couldn't have afforded a house fire years ago, for people that are stuck in their homes, having trouble making payments, unemployed and trying to sell a house, this is not good news. this is the s&p wconfirming tha housing prices are down. a f

ali velshi is with us now. remember, there was talk of $5 a gallon gas. now, we are hearing prices could be down to $3.50 by memorial day. what's up with that? >> nobody's speculation is ever right about this stuff. the bottom line is with he broke a trend after 44 days of increases. we finally stopped. i'm glad we did. it wouldn't make sense to keep going given what's happened to oil prices. we lost about $9 in oil yesterday. we lost another $3 and change this morning. oil prices have been plummeting along with other commodities, because the dollar is starting to strengthen, which is the argument i have been making for a long time. it has a whole lot less to do with demand and supply than speculation and oil and commodities have been a better investment for big money than other places. oil started to come down when we heard news of osama bin laden's death. ultimately, all of the stuff that drove it up on speculation is starting to leave the oil market. carol, let's be clear. i don't think we will see plummeting gas prices. i am not even sure they are goi

in an interview on cnn's "american morning" rumsfeld got a little impatient with a question from ali velshig -- while you were defense secretary, the bush administration had both said that -- had said at one point that capturing osama bin laden was the most important thing to do in the fight against terrorism. and then subsequently, we started to hear that it wasn't all that important. which one is it? is this the biggest thing we have achieved in the fight against terrorism, or is it not really that important? >> oh, i think that it's a false construct. >> well -- what part -- what part is a false construct? >> just a minute, and i will answer your question. >> go ahead. >> the important thing to do is to protect the american people. that is critical. and to do that, obviously, capturing or killing the head of al qaeda was enormously important. and -- but what -- the reason it was important was to protect the american people, and if one looks back over close to a decade now, there's not been a major successful attack on america for close to a decade. so obviously, it was highly successful.

ali velshi took a closer look at these hotly disputed boundaries.look. >> when the president talks about returning israel to its pre-1967 borders, let me give you a sense of what he's talking about. now, this might look nice and neat when you look at it like this, until you zoom in on the west bank where jewish settlements started cropping up in the 1960s. you can see those little diamonds. and then more started cropping up in the '70s. and then in the '80s they were supposed to stop after the oslo 2 agreement in 1995, but they continued growing, as you can see. the red and the orange round circles are all the extra settlements. those are unauthorized settlements. 300,000 people, jewish people, have now populated that area outside of israel's official boundaries. then you've also got jerusalem, which you can see right over there. well, that -- both israel and the palestinians see that as their capital city. that is a point of great contention. it's a city that the palestinians hope to get some claim to in the two-state vision and it's something that
