join our live conversation for the next half houral @ali velshi on twitter. i'm here in phoenix, the eepicenter of the immigration debate in the country. states like energy, new jersey, california has even larger immigrant population. mexicans are the biggest community of immigrants in the united states by a long shot making up close to one-third of the total foreign-born population in this country. as you can see there is a huge gap between mexico and the rest of the pack. america's foreign born population reached 40 million people in 2011. 11 million are believed to be undocumented. the debate over u.s. immigration reform basically breaks down into two camps. those who want to give the undocumented immigrants some sort of legal status, and those who prefer to ship them back home. unfortunately the focus on undocumented workers or border security detracts from a deeper discussion about the economics of immigration. there is a debate on how to best recruit talent from the rest of the world and keep it here so america keeps it's competitive edge. high tech ind

real money's ali velshi is here. li more jobs were created than economists predicted, but there is disagreement here about how to view these numbers. maybe you can tell us why. >> reporter: and there always is, and today was a good example. first let me remind our viewers of what happened. 175,000 jobs were created in february. that's up from a revised 129,000 in january. and a revised 84,000 in december. they always revise them. 25,000 jobs for the earlier two months. but the $175,000 we got in february was still below the 12-month average that we've seen of 198,000. it's in the neighborhood, so it's not terrible. we create more jobs so you would think the unemployment rate that best would stay steady would go down. this is why i'm like a broken record on this, don't look like the unemployment rate first. it rose. it went from 6.6% to 6.7%. the reason for that 264,000 people joined the labor force, which we typically take as a sign that those people are optimistic about finding a job. but, they joined the labor force

"real money"s ali velshi joins us. why is it problematic moving oil around the u.s. >> because of the oil coming from canada in the tar sands and the bakan in north dakota, there's a lot of calls for pipelines. i'd like to use less oil. but between argue against it. we have one of the biggest pipelines, we have a lot. this is part of the consequence of this. as we avoid oil, we are not reducing the consumption of oil. the problem is there's oil coming in through canada, coming from north dakota, and there's oil using waterway, and, you know, going through tankers. the problem is these are dangerous things to move, crude is dangerous. we still move as much. 93% of america's total oil movement goes flow the pipeline. the construction is not keeping pace because there's a lengthy approval process and a great deal of opposition from the public. operators are forced to look for alternatives. in 2012 the movement of oil by trucks, train and river barges rose to one million barrels a day, a 57% increase over the year before.

aim ---ali velshi and this is "real money." >> this is "real money."ou are the most important part of the show. join in on the conversation at twitter. or facebook.com/aj real money. get ready, the interest rates are going up, whether this year of the years to come, to finance a home or car is going to increase. wu saw that yesterday when fed chair yellen suggested a time line for the rate hike and timed a possible raising of the feds near zero rate to the middle of next year. the fed can say one thing and influences part of the borrowing universe. the fed sets short term rates for what the banks charge each other for the overlight loans and some consumer loans are based on the feds fund rate including those linked to the prime rate and mortgages is a different kettle of fish. it is related to the fed but dictated by the traders and investors and wednesday's reaction trickling the borrowing rating. that happened back in may ben bernanke hinted that the feds would pull back on the bond buying and the fed didn't touch the rates but the mortgage rate jump

welcome to "real money with ali velshi." tensions in ukraine continue to escalate. today the state owned gas production company that provides ukraine with crucial natural gas threatened to cut ukraine off from its pipeline. it says it's owed $1.9 billion for past deliveries, and they said we cannot deliver gas for free. no one thinks the timing of this is coincidental, by the way. ukraine's finances are in disarray. the interim government that seized power last week in kiev, ukraine's capitol, is teetering dangerously close to financial default. there is a real history of this stuff. in 2009 russia shut off ukraine's gas for two weeks over a dispute over payments. that just worsened an already ailing ukrainian economy. the gas cuts helped sink output by 25%. remember, it's used to run factories. ukraine depends on russia for most of its energy needs and used to enjoy discounts on the price it paid for natural gas until this week. any possible energy cut off could cripple a country that depends on gas to heat its homes and power its factories. meanwhile russia appear
