i'm ali velshi. new york city hospitals are overwhelmed by a skyrocketing number of coronavirus cases. they're finally, finally getting some much-needed help. the u.s. navy hospital ship "usns comfort" is now docked on the west side of the city, where the ship's medical personnel will take care of patients with other medical issues, not coronavirus. new york city mayor bill de blasio described how he felt as he watched the ship dock this morning. >> it's a very emotional moment. i went up on the roof here to watch the comfort come in and i had this incredible feeling of peace, actually, that help was finally coming. that we were not alone. >> the "comfort's" arrival as the field hospital set up in new york city's javits center is also about to open along with another field hospital in new york central park. nationwide, there are now more than 153,000 confirmed cases of the coronavirus. more than 2,800 people have died in the united states. we should note that most people who contract the virus will r

i'm ali velshi. multiple states are now taking measures never before seen in u.s. and a major effort to stomp the extremely contagious novel coronavirus. in addition to shuttering non-essential businesses citizens are being told stay-at-home. there are 19,444 cases of covid-19 here in the united states. there's been 247 deaths. i say at least because the numbers increase by the minute. this all comes as medical professionals and officials from across the country continue to sound the alarm that they are running out of life-saving supplies and equipment while the president continues to talks about what the mostly cloudy skies is doing to solve that problem. >> when will every american who needs a test get a test and be able to get a test? and why not have medical equipment being shipped right now to hospitals? >> we're hearing very positive things about testing. we don't want every american to go out and get a test. 350 million people. we don't want that. we want people that have a problem. >> there are americans that say they have symptoms and they can't get tested

i'm ali velshi. as the number of coronavirus cases and deaths keeps rising, we're now getting more concrete evidence about how the pandemic is affecting the economy and the serious need for relief. right now there are about 76,000 confirmed cases in the united states. the death toll stands at approximately 1,100. this comes as the labor department says nearly 3.3 million people filed for first-time unemployment benefits for the week ending march 21st. just 282,000 people filed initial claims during the previous week before the lockdowns began. the news came hours after the senate unanimously approved a $2 trillion relief package that includes direct payments and more money for unemployment insurance. the bill now heads to the house where speaker nancy pelosi plans to hold a voice vote tomorrow but she says more will need to be done. >> there's so many things we didn't get in any of these bills yet in a way that we need to, but we're still going to need to have more money for state and local governmen

i'm ali velshi. we now have more than 140,000 coronavirus cases here in the united states. more than 2400 americans have now died. the president spoke earlier tonight in the rose garden and admitted when we all suspected, that the country is not going to be up and running by easter. instead he extended guidelines for social distancing to at least april the 30th, and after dr. anthony fauci said the united states could see 100,000 to 200,000 deaths as a result of covid-19, the president cited an estimate that said if the federal government had done nothing, 2.2 million people could have died. he then said if 100,000 -- 200,000 americans die, it would mean that the federal government did a good job. >> when i heard the number today -- first time i've heard that number, because i've been asking the same question that people have been asked -- i felt even better about what we did last week with the $2.2 trillion because you're talking about a potential of up to 2.2 million, it could be higher than that. you're talking about 2.2 million deaths, 2.2 million people from this. and
