alice was the light. >> alice was electric light. >> my great grandmother was an. electric light, electricity had just started so she had a costume wired up battery and thiste was her holding up a lightbulb and her whole dresses electricity it is in the museum of the state of new york. >> , it's like the magalie today were also a costume party. it's a most incredible exquisite couture fantastic. >> huge amounts of money later the golden diamond buttons and our favorite character of all is thiswi woman. >> fearing strong. >> which i think is the greatest name and she came her costume was the cat costume and we have a picture in the book it was made out of cat faces and the skirt was cattails all white and on her head was a taxidermy cat that gets pause on that and on her neck she had a black choker which indictment. >> totally totally epic. >> i'm a little curious how you're going to answer because you alluded to thinking thatly your mom would've enjoyed this book which obviously makes me completely delighted and happy because the highest rated. my question about the bit about connection and heritage the phrase that you cringe at sorry to bring a backup, how did your mother feel about being a vanderbilt. >> it's interesting i know how she felt because they did a radio interview with the cdc and the radio interviewer found a soundbite where i asked my momie that question about the vanderbilt in 2016 and i forgot what she said but i remember it was stunning she said what i been saying which was i felt no connection to the whatsoever, i felt like a stranger in the little bit of the contact that i had with them.th i did not think of them as my family, they were not my family my family was her nanny and her grandmother on her maternal side was not her mother or her father, they were dead, it was not any of the vanderbilt she grew up with no connection to the vanderbilt. i was lucky because i did not have a happy i did not have that name growing up but i think my mom early on decided she didn't want anything to do with what she seen from the vanderbilt. 16 she goes to hollywood to visit her mother and her mother left to do anything and my mom dates harold flynn, howard hughes, the hot howard hughes at the time wanted to marry her and she ends up out of poor decision-making marrying a thug that works for howard hughes and at the age of 17 and stays married and gets divorced in three weeks later meets a 63-year-old director, conductor and marries him within two or three weeks. >> wow that is interesting even how much time she spent with gertrude whitney. >> that is what isth so sad, my mom never connected with whom she would've had so much in common, she is a legitimate sculpture, very talented who loved art and had such a great american art collection that she founded the whitney museum because they would not take it when she offered it to them in a very bohemian life and british village, there would've been so much and she washe very close to reggie and her brother she could've told my mom a lot about him but they never had real conversations, my mom wasf terrified of her and my mom stopped speaking to her own mother for 15 or so years crucial years of her life and only reconnected with her mother toward the end of her mother's life and even then they never had a conversation about the trial, it was a cool breeze like nothing had happened. >> that is wild. i believe you never talked about the trial. >> is incredible it's one of the huge point in my mom's life to just sit down and talk about it it's incredible it's like the elephant in the room. it is so sad to me, that would in my 11-year-old mom's life to be living with this great artist who said yeah come to my studio let's paint together pay in the corner, none of that ever happened. >> you don't think having be to some small degree raised by gertrude - i really don't my mom started painting at age ten and she went to school called wheeler which had a really good art department that was a high school because she left high school at 16 to go to l.a. and never went back to school. >> was there anything that came up in the course of writing this book that took you by surprise? anything that totally blew you away out of left field, didn't see it coming. >> everything about my grandfather really did blow me away. >> had you had an imagination about him when you wereou a kid did you tell yourself storiesl about who reggie may have been. >> there's two visuals i have of reggie in my mind have a really lovely portrait of reggie when he was maybe in his 20s and is quite dashing and looks like he is about to go out riding and i like that portrait very much it's a handsome man and is very 19 tens or early 1900s in a have a picture of his college dorm room at el and him as a littlee kid and carriage he was handsome at that age and a lot of the pictures of him by the time he marries my grandmother he's bloated and disfigured and he looks like a bore somebody withdrawn it dinner about his horses. which is exactly what he did. again there was no connection nothing i felt in common with this person i went to the same college that he did but i don't think he was much of a student he got inot because the vanderbt had history at that school and he got kicked out toward the end there was a scandal and he got kicked out for a while and then finally allowed to graduate. i was really stunned by that and stunned, a small detail but the list of people who he owed money to when he died i just found inexcusable one was the newspaper guy the newspaper stand on the corner he owed more than $200 to an out of time when a newspaper cost a penny. that's unconscionable to stiff the newspaper person the laundry woman p was stiffed, it is awfu. >> you some pretty disappointed in him. >> i really am, i think a lot of people listening to this have gotten e-mails from google writing a sob story about your privileged upbringing and it must've been hard, i get that perspective it's easy perspective to have it maybe i would've said the same thing if i was on the outside but there's not, i don't feel sad for reggie were sympathetic i just feel like he wasted he was an alcoholic and probably was from the time early on but he wasted he could've done extraordinary things, the fact that there's not anything really that they have that is lasting of any real value, they built these palaces that are museums and stuff most of them are torn down because they were too expensive to keep up but it's not -- the million dollars to the vanderbilt university but that was because his wife was a southerner and she convinced him to and he gave money to a church but it's not like they were big philanthropist and there's no lasting thing that they contributed, obviously for business and railroads and things like that, just in terms of generosity you don't see a lot of it.>> >> it's interesting that you're getting that feedback. i know when you worked on the book one of the things we were both thinking about is what this small story, it is a big sweeping story but one dynasty from a perspective can say in a larger extent about american inequality and maybe about american values on the one hand this kind of wealth theea o achievement of this wealth and notoriety and attention is in some regard. >> did that freeze fory? everybody? >> i think it just rose for catherine. >> i will continue. >> she will probably gety back on. >> why don't i go to the q&a's. >> here is onene from kate, christina i'm seniors, i guess it doesn't matter. >> kate says if they were to visit you in your son what would you like to tell the but what topics of conversation. >> they would be terrified of the sky, my son does't not get scared of strangers but i think -- >> emi back? i'm so sorry i was just filling it with a couple questions. if they were to visit would you be likely to tell them. >> i would like to hear from them i would love to know, he talked about a mania for money but what was the motivation what was his rosebud what was his childhood pain that made him propel himself forward with the resentment of his k loser dad he wasn't particularly ambitious in a farmer occasionally carrying supplies, was it fear of instability, that would be something i'd be interested in knowing about. this is from tina if it was a characteristic of your dad what would be. >> my dad was aad great dad he s very present he did not come from money, he didn't come from power dynasty he came from a family that had strong roots in the earth and strong roots to each other. he knew what kind of dad he wanted to be. i certainly hope that is rubbed off on me, even for the short amount of time i had with him. i think it has and i don't know he has this license of humor which is a neighboring nic myself as a kid and him and my dad as well. >> keep going with the q&a and feeling people are pretty interested in having questions of last night i had never told the and to me it is funny and charming and my mom got a kick out of my response. you can google stephen colbert, it's a long story but it's funny and kind of shocking and we're but it says a lot about my mom and how interesting she was. >> aidan wants to know how difficult to write this book with your work and responsibilities as well as parenting and how long the book took and you can put that into one. >> we can both talk about that, from my perspective we agreed to do this together. i think it was a little bit before covid in my mind it comes together and i'm a little confused, and my memory we agreed to do this and then you were having a child so you were able to do a w bunch of actual legwork and research with the inclination or the ability or time to do because it was still in the midst of the election and my schedule was really insane and then we discussed how we wanted it to be, i think i wrote the gladys chapter i can't remember if i wrote that first. >> is started with the chapter about your cousin because we were both moved by the mental image. for those of you that don't know the breakers is theop vanderbilt state in newport rhode island r that is the biggest tourist attraction and all up until just a few years ago the vanderbilt family and the breakers they finally change the guidelines in the last vanderbilt was kicked out of the breakers just a couple of years ago. i know that we were both really moved by and intrigued by the mental image of what it feels like to hook care of the house in the 21st century after the family had built in the 19th century. we started the story there. >> gladys is wonderful she is a nurse and she was devoted her mom had devoted her life to help maintain the breakers raising money gladys had spent every summer of her life with her family and was on an advisory board for the historical society and she complained about things that were being kept up or condensation on the windows and she complained about a newn visitor center that she thought should be across the street and not an actual property, and based on opportunity they felt she had been complaining and they felt like she's here at our pleasure and we are no longer pleased so they said we done a survey in the heating system doesn't work and it's too dangerous to have anyone living up there so you have to leave. i think we were both struck the imagery of gladys leaving which was the only entrance she would ever come and go through this house of her great-grandmother hergr great-grandparents built. that is how it started, we went back and forth because after you came back and started -- >> then covid have. i was getting back to research and writing a big way in february of 2020 and then covid happened in march, i ended up going to the new york historical society brandishing my breast pump like it was a rifle and saying give me everything that you got and i imaged everything and fled the city. >> what's that about? >> between two babies who are toddlers appearing in the spoken covid, there was a lot. >> what made me nervous i was not sure, i would read what was captured and given thoughts and tweak it and then we would go back and forth on stuff but i ti finally said other than let me think about that, i think finally at some point. >> i like to generally assume one reasons to have a great writer is to actually listen to them and see what they can do. it you wrote those and something to me and i was blown away i was completelyy wrong, it made me look at things differently. i love that i t thought that was fantastic. >> thank you i hope that our listeners h today enjoy those chapters two, i really enjoyedti writing them and am very touched that you let me take that risk when we were starting to work on it. that was really wonderful. i found a question that could be fun and keeping with a lot of what we've beenom talking about. somebody who maybe has good dirt on you from yell jackie kaplan. jackie wants to know how do you think your life as a journalist would be different if your last name had been vanderbilt. nbi'm curious of an unbiased observer in that case. i'm curious about>> that too. >> i don't think i would have the career that i have. ie don't think, i would not have been able to do what i've done if that was my last name. when i don't think it would have the initiative. if i been vanderbilt and there is money and stuff like that. i think hees did not with money just having that name makes you think that you are different some way or special or linked to a glorious past. i never felt that i viewed this as something that i wanted to have people never talk about go out of my way to not have people know at least initially and meeting me. i without mind revealing it three months later or six months later or something but i think there is such baggage that comes with that name in so many assumptions about what that name means that peopleme would instantly every last name is vanderbilt they would assume styou're very wealthy and that u don't need to work and for country in which thugs have this myth and desire and people who are wealthy on a pedestal there's also a lot of animosity in you must of had it easy, i did have it easy and a whole bunch of ways but i don't think the job of the reporter is to go to a place and have opinions about you in advance. and you want to be married to the other peers under present and you don't want to be when somebody walks in the room and the best person in business and early on and it was a great luxury i don't think i would've had the career, what's interesting and inherited by wilson. >> i was always told we did not havehe room for neil and grace. if i had the freedom to add another chapter to this book i would add a chapter about them. >> they were quite a pair, the sun did not haveen money because he was disinherited married five or six times, work as a journalist and tried to start newspapers with the money he did have and he was disinherited because he wanted to be a journalist but he was never taken seriously because of his last name and he served as a pirate in world war i and tormented by his officers because they said here's a vanderbilt guy is my private i do whatever i want with him. it seems like seems like a very weird ms that person but he made an effort to do a stuff on his n and in his own way. it seemed like he wasn't able to. my brother had a middle name vanderbilt and i would never give a kid that name. >> here's a question from a 15-year-old. the first day of vanderbilt and your successes really help me as the defender of the family to come out are you proud of being known to you with they were different treated? >> as you may find on the book, again i don't mrs. vanderbilt but i'm certainly not the first in the family. >> i don't want to go into to be details, there were a lot of vanderbilt living in public life in a t private life, even my mos mom is not a vanderbilt she was accused of being a lesbian. it came out during this trial that she had been seen with a woman in her bed kissing and by a made it was a scandal that destroyed her in one of the big reasons that my mom was taken away by somebody else who also had a secret there were secrets iwithin secrets, it was interesting when you see the hidden history throughout the afuneral history as well. >> i felt that was something that came up several times. there is a chapter i do whatever you go too much there is a chapter about whether the commodore sons who had a private life the terminology was different the different time. but it would be interesting for you to meet her. >> that's the interesting how history is written a great book the history of gay new york. >> everyone has to readea this book did you read it? >> i got to interview him a while back two years ago he teaches that in my you. it's a hidden history of the city and you realize he writes history and who has power matters and what we had no of the past, there were tons of gay people and that was not in use of the time but when you start to see there is a whole in the neighborhood i live in every otherth building has a gay histy to and they cafÉ i sometimes have coffee or breakfast was once aes lesbian cafÉ. i love that hidden history that's what's so excited about being involved in a book like this to stumble across the. >> emily wants to know the title from the shelf behind me, that's a feel for a different time, they are really old. elizabeth wants to know i think this is an interesting question how did you know when the book was finished how did you know how far to go that's a real oninteresting question. part of it is not a linear history but there is aro progression over time so there is the ark in a natural art to that. i talked about my mom is the mlast vanderbilt that seems to make sense to put that at the end but then you have this wonderful idea on touring through what remains or the ghost letter after, how do younk think about it i think it's a really good question the book is not meant to be an encyclopedic account of everything that happened in the vanderbilt dynasty. we don't really talk about george who built the breakers. >> you said the breakers, it's asheville. >> i'm sorry i met philip mar, thank you for catching that. >> you've never been there? >> it's beautiful i have definitely been in it's incredible, we decided there was not an obvious way to work origin to the ark of the story that we were telling. in retrospect i'm a little sad that we don't have more of neely and grace because they think they would've been kind of interesting. some of it had to do with seeing the repeated patterns and seeing the way some of c the characters interact with one another. it felt organic it felt right. >> that's one of the joys of writing there is no formula that is due ten pages on this andou that, it is all how something feels as youfe are writing and u kind of know whenhe it is done d it's like editing a story for news on 60 minutes and working on a story right now you have two endings to it. it could end early or later and i'm going back to see how it plays out in the edit room and how it feels,. >> angel romito wants to know how we met, did you know each other before writing the book or were you introduced tor each other to pursue the project. >> we were introduced to each other. >> i think is a publisher. >> he is great he is. really wonderful. the reason we were introduced because anderson had this phenomenal and amazing idea for a book but it's also a different kind of book from the books that is written before which are straightforward memoirs of really amazing correspondence that he shared with his mom the rainbow comes and goes if you haven't read it yet. they were asking around for people who could help with history piece and if any of you have read my novels you know what history nerd i a am. it was a good book. surely would like to know if we could talk about the trial that we referred to a few times read we might be operating on assumed knowledge ofed vanderbilt histo. >> my mom's trial or the trial -- >> probably your mom's trial that was actually news to be what we started researching it was widely covered in the 1930s when it happened but i had not stumbled upon it until we started working ons this projec. >> my mom was taken to europe by her mother who is 18 or 19 years old at the time and suddenly the widow of vanderbilt and has a last name vanderbilt and has his child, infant dodo and be safe and they take her back to new york they get richard entering group gerte and they decide to sue for custody how my mom's mom declared unfit. a huge court case ensues in the circuit court is the trial of the century ats the time. it pitted my mom's mom who didn't have money of her own when he was portrayed in the press either as the woman -- the poor lady who wanted to keep hold
