he served and succeeded me as the alice b. toklas lgbt democratic club and the national board of directors of the human rights campaign. he served as a human rights commissioner and currently and recently appointed by this board to the police commission where he is doing extraordinary work. julius has been a true leader in the community and we're lucky to have him here in san francisco. he will continue to do great things. two things about julius that make him even more special than he would be otherwise. one is i know in the lgbt community there is a stereotype that it is white, gay people. we know that the lgbt community is as says any other community in this world. julius has worked hard with others and i have tried to support that effort every step of the way to make sure that in the community we are welcoming of every member of our community when there was a bar in the castro that was discriminating against african-american people, julius was part of a leadership who made sure there was accountability. to make sure that we recog

i got involved in the alice b. toklas democratic club. i ran for the democratic central committee in 2004. i ended up sharing the committee. it was a gradual process for me. by the time i started thinking about running for supervisor, it made sense because of my involvement in the community and in politics. >> what did you learn from campaigning for supervisor? >> i learned a lot. i knocked on about $15,000. -- i knocked about 15,000 doors. i met a huge number of people. that is the best way to learn about the neighborhood, the city, and what people want and what their concerns are. i feel i can do so much more than before and started campaigning. -- i feel like i know so much more than before i started campaigning. we're all part of the left on the national standard. i am a good liberal democrat. in the san francisco spectrum, and probably considered more middle of the road. -- i am probably considered more middle-of-the-road. i am very independently comes to the issues. i do not vote the party line. a judge each issue on its merits. tha

efforts we can make to create a model approach to serving the lgbt seniors in san francisco, the alice b. toklas club would live to handle that -- help with that. we fully support your recommendations. i had the unique opportunity of cochairing the hearing by the human rights commission and the commission on aging in 2002 and the report, everyone has reviewed. it had no less than 67 recommendations. to move forward and i think while we since 2003 have moved forward on a lot of those, there is plenty of those that need to be done. i hope that you'll start with that and continue to push those recommendations. i think since that time, we have had an increase in marriage rights which has made us feel a little more confident about legal protections for us. certainly we have community agencies that have improved in got more resources and we're hearing a lot about that this afternoon. keep supporting those. we remain in a situation where laws, prejudice, and poverty hit seniors the hardest. especially the poor women and people of color in our community. many of us do not know what we will do when we ge
