alice stewart, let me ask you this.d so on. with charges so far he's maintained and even grown his lead, trump. are trials different? when he goes on trial is it different for voters, do you think? >> that certainly remains to be seen. what we're seeing here, as you mentioned, each passing indictment seems to be just further confirmation of what many people already think. what we're seeing is confirmation bias is set in. it is in full effect. people who believe that donald trump has done nothing wrong and this is a weaponization of the doj and this is a two-tiered justice system, they think this is just further evidence of that. those who say they are fed up with donald trump and they don't want to continue along this path of denying the election and overthrowing the results of the election, they are ready to turn the page. the problem is the volume of these indictments is so great. it's almost become white noise. a lot of people are saying enough already, this is just one big attempt to discredit donald trump. and many

for more on the story we're joined by alice stewart and maria car dona. you both for joining me this evening. i want to ask you about this decision by the former president to counter program, to do this interview with the fox news host tucker carlson. how much do you think that his absence from that debate reduces the significance of it? >> look, he's going to have his audience with tucker carlson, but the good thing is that the rnc is hosting this debate for republican primary voters, and those republican primary voters will tune in. and if nothing else this gives those candidates the opportunity as the former vice president said to talk about the issues that the american people concerned with. look, i talked to pence this morning on the radio. he wants to talk about inflation. he wants to talk about energy and federalism. these other candidates, many of them want to sort of introduce themselves to the national stage. that gives them the opportunity, so from their standpoint it is -- it is a positive that donald trump is not on there, but from the republ

joining us are political commentators bakari sellers and alice stewart.ealing is it that trump is back on the campaign trail an joying the limelight right now out there in alabama just a day after he was arraigned on charges of trying to subvert the 2020 presidential election? >> wolf, it is critical that he get out there and meet with voters face-to-face and engage in retail politics, because as we all know, his courtroom calendar is getting ready to get more filled up and he won't have as much time for his campaign calendar. and, look, alabama is a perfect place for him in terms of connecting with his hard core supporters. but what i'm hearing and seeing, there is polls out there, recent poll that we've had out today, shows that 47% of people in iowa are still supporting donald trump, and 20% supporting ron desantis. but when i talk with key gop officials in the state of iowa, they say that does not match up with what they're seeing on the ground. they say the numbers with trump ahead is it is very early and he has tremendous name i.d. and great sympath

republican strategist alice stewart and karen finney joining me now. just asked about the mug shot. here is what he had to say. >> did you see donald trump's mug shot yet? >> i did see it on television. >> what did you think? >> handsome guy. >> he's a hand some guy. we know from reporting that this was a carefully crafted expression. this was a lot of discussion about how he should look in that mug shot. alice, what bow make of this moment? >> well first off, erica, there is no disputing the fact, this is a sad and bad time for american history. we have a former president indicted for the fourth time. and look, i think it is really ironic that here we have this campaign now the central focus of the trump campaign is on these four indictments. and the mug shot merch is going to ring him in millions of dollars to help his legal fees and it is quite ironic that the merch said never surrender, and he has surrendered four times on these four indictments. and i'm not one to give out advice to democrats, but i know democrats in the general election don't lik

joining us, cnn political director david chalian and as ashley alison and alice stewart.ocrats in all these recent elections, including in several so-called red states. what do you make of that? >> i thisnk this is much different than pro-life across the board. the pro-life community agrees that the fda failed to consider certain safety guidelines that are used with regard to mail order abortion pills. they do believe these are dangerous. when a woman goes and gets these three the mail, they're not seeing a doctor, they're not getting supervision and many of them, thousands of them, are seriously injured, some are gravely injured and, look, there's obgyns across the country that don't perform elective abortions and they are treating these women seriously hurt from these abortion pills. nothing will change immediately as a result of this, it will go to the supreme court but this is a huge step in protecting women's lives and ultimately the lives of unborn children. >> ashley, how do you ever see it? >> i think this is a continuation of the decision that happened overturnin

democrat paul, republican scott jennings, and alice stewart. scott, how concerned should republican candidates and voters alike be that the former president seems to be telegraphing what he will do if he loses in 2024? >> well, the republicans should be concerned about the fact that, today, he looks like he is the odds on favorite for the republican nomination, and there is a real chance, if you look at the way the calendar is laid out, he could become the de facto nominee of the party, then, basically, become a convicted felon -- not basically, actually become a convicted felon, and become the actual nominee of the party at the convention in late summer. it would put the party in a bind because there is a huge cohort of republicans and americans who are simply not going to consider voting for a convicted felon. now, the trump team, maybe they beat some of this, i don't know. if i were him, i would want to chance to try and beat it. his lawyers seem to want to delay it. for him, at this point, anderson, the campaign's defense, and his defense i

alice stewart and maria cardona.a. trump with a big lead. i want to ask you just as a devil's advocate for a moment, the thing about iowa is that second choice votes matter. if your first choice duntsd make it then you can switch to another candidate. is it possible that even if trump wins a viable alternative might emerge from this that consolidates some of that non-trump vote? >> it's completely possible for that to happen. and that's the beauty of iowa, is that it's not necessarily there to pick the winner for the nom nomination, it's there to winnow the field. and what you're talking about is the person who puts on these polls because she understands iowa politics. what you're referring to is what he this call the iowa footprint. as caucusgoers, you can go in and like you said pick your first or second choice and they're still looking at it. what this poll does, it asks people what is your number one choice, your number two choice and your third choice. that is the iowa footprint you look at. with these numbers d
