let's go to alicia acuna who has had a deep dive in all of this in arizona. she's here with the very latest of what is going on there. hi, alicia. >> hi, martha. that's a question actually that's being asked back to washington. there are a number of factors at play here. let's begin with the law that's on the books here that allows folks to receive an early ballot to walk into a polling center on election day and drop it off. the ballots must go through the same process as voters go through when they walk up, ask for a ballot and vote on election day, which is signature verification and on to be tabulated. when folks vote in person, that process happens onside. when the early ballots were dropped off on election day, that still needed to happen. the number of people that chose to drop off their early ballot on tuesday was record breaking. 290,000 in maricopa county alone. in 2020, it was 170,000. >> this number is immense. it's something -- it's a conversation that probably arizona needs to have in terms of public policy. this is a number that keeps growing. i

we are going to start with our senior correspondent alicia acuna live in phoenix, the focal point for the post election period. why is the counting taking so long? >> john, that is the question of the moment, isn't it. i can tell you here in arizona, a few things. you have two tight races, you have massive voter turnout, and you also had -- you have laws on the books that determine, among other things, the order in which the ballots are counted. according to the arizona secretary of state's office, the estimated number of uncounted ballots in arizona is about 619,000. maricopa county, it's more than 400,000. maricopa is the second largest voting jurisdiction in the nation. 80% of voters here were early voters, and under arizona law, folks are also allowed to drop their early ballot off on election day. on tuesday, 290,000 voters did just that. that's a huge jump from 2020 when 170,000 voters walked in with them. >> once they go through signature verification, once they are deemed good signature, go through an audit cue, they can be sent ahead to the board for tabulation. this number i

correspondent alyssa acuna has the latest tonight from phoenix, good morning alicia. >> good evening,ret. the question on everyone's mind is why is arizona taking so long to count the ballots? well, there is a news conference underway with maricopa county elections officials right now. they are going to get into the specifics there. but, what we can tell you is it's partly a law that allows voters who receive early ballot to walk into election center on election day and drop it off. those ballots must go through the same signature process as the ones folk use for same day inn. person voting. when you vote in person in arizona, that verification is done on site. when the early ballots were dropped off on election day, that still needed to happen, so here's the thing, the number of people who dropped off their early ballot on tuesday, known as late earlies was record-breaking 290,000 in maricopa county alone. in 2020 it was 170,000. in 2018 it was 1,668,000. this number is immense it's a conversation that arizona needs to have in terms of policy. arizonans appreciate the ease of the vot
