alicia menendez joins us and "roll call" robert traynem are here.uld carry some risk given some polls show 70% of americans oppose don't ask, don't tell. and, of course, a core democratic constituency that is strongly against it. what do you think will happen here? >> when you get into the nuance to stay or whether to file an appeal. first of all, its portonight remember that the doj operates separately from the obama administration. they will make a decision about what they want to do. bottom line here, chris, this has to happen legislatively. it would be an incredibly tight schedule on which they would need to review this new report that's coming out. they would need to pass the defense bill with this repeal in the senate and have to reconcile it with the house and then it would actually have to pass. >> which they had difficulty with last time. >> a lot of difficulty doing but it came down to a very partisan split vote. i think that's what we might see the second time around. >> robert, do you think we can push this through in a lame duck session

alicia menendez is a senior adviser for the new democrat network. okay. alicia, obviously, there she's responding to this whole witchcraft thing. but now we're hearing back in 2006 in a debate, she said, china had a strategic plan to take over america and, quote, there's much i want to say. i wish i wasn't privy to some of the classified information that i am privy to. so what do you make of this? >> i mean, i don't know what to make of this. i think it's absolutely absurd. and it sort of falls in this larger pattern. we've been seeing with her which is she's a loose cannon. you don't know what she's going to say. you got the impression that she's not very serious about this. that for her, this is her 15 minutes' fame. and not a lot more. listen, i think voters want to hear substance. they want to hear plans for if we send you to washington, what are you going to do? and i just don't think they're getting very much of that from her. more to the point she's sort of been m.i.a. i mean, a lot of the press in the state has complained they can't get her to sit

alicia menendez joins us and phil brownstein is back with us, as well.out the effectiveness in terms of getting the vote out of surrogates. we know that they're raising money and raising a lot of money. do you think they can make a difference in terms of getting out of the vote? >> i think, first of all, in terms of michelle obama that we've already learned that she's a charismatic, bright, interesting person. we learned that right before president obama took office. the problem is that spouses in this case, male or female, they kind of reinforce the office holder and, in this case, i think when you've got president obama's numbers going down what michelle obama's presence on the campaign trail might reflect is how weak the president may be at the moment. i mean, the question came up in the california gubernatorial debate last night, do you want president obama out here campaigning for it. just the fact that that question was asked tells you a lot about what happened to the fading star power of president obama. i'm not sure as charismatic as michelle oba
