alison starling has the story. >> it is not your typical summer camp. instead of swimming, arts, and crafts, this camp is all about math. math tree's powder lynn salvo says the first day is critical. >> if you actually come in kicking and screaming. by the end of the day, they almost always go home smiling and saying they did not want to leave. >> salvo started math tree 10 years ago. now there are 11 camps in virginia, maryland, and d.c., with 700 children ages 6 to 15. she says three months in the summer is too long to go without doing math and she wants to use fun activities to help kids gain confidence. >> when you understand math, it is fun. bacon go in the same sentence. >> salvo, a former teacher and stay at home mom, went back for her ph.d. in math at george mason university. her math tree camps are now doing a quarter million dollars in business, but for her, it is about passing along her enthusiasm and appreciation for math to as many kids as possible. >> what i get out of it watching kids' faces light up when they understand something. >> lyn

alison cartville is there with the latest. tell us what you know, alison. >> good morning, dylan. what we know at this hour is the associated press and other media outlets have identified who they believe to be the shooter in this case as a george sodini. a 48-year-old man from scott township. these claims are bolstered by the discovery of a blog site under his name where entries on that site began back in november of 2008 and continued right up until august 3rd of 2009. and in those blogs, there is very disturbing evidence of this man's plan to carry out an act such as this. he talked about his hatred and anger towards women. he talked about his hatred and anger towards his family and he even spoke of how he did dry runs of this event. in an entry marked january 6th on 2009, he said, it is 8:45 p.m. i chickened out expletive. i brought the loaded gun, everything. hell. he repeats that type of entries throughout this long period of time. he started this blog with his birth date and the last entry, talked about his death and that death date was given as 8/4/2009. dylan? >> clint va

i'm alison starling. the budget is shrinking but enrollment is rising. courtney robinson tells us what that will mean for the more than 141,000 students back in class today. >> for the class of 2010, it is a celebration. a new year, at the school, back to the books, back to where things left off with budget cuts. >> we will have a good year no matter what. >> as montgomery county's 200 schools will come students, they are in the midst of a spending freeze. any open positions will stay vacant except for principals and teachers whose pay is supplemented by federal dollars. this after the system was able to shore up a deficit in the spring, shedding 2 to the jobs and doing away with the cost of living -- shedding 250 jobs and doing away with cost-of-living raises. >> we may have a few more issues to deal with as the year unfolds, depending on how revenues come in. we staffed and we planned. >> the projected budget gap looms. montgomery county is having to do the same with less funding and about 3000 new students. >> i think it is going to hurt the students
