alison?i, thanks. >>> now let's go ahead and head overseas to north korea, where the region is on edge after the country proclaimed it was entering into a state of war with south korea. cnn international anchor, jim clancy, is in seoul. jim, after hearing a week of threats at this point, north korea has seemed to have had gone silent. why is that? >> reporter: it is far too difficult to really predict what it means, to analyze it. it's a dangerous game, first of all, because north korea is so unpredictable. it's also so remote. we can't see inside the government to understand the decision making process. obviously, there's a lot of speculation. people are wondering, did kim jong-un get the message that was delivered by china, by russia, and so many others, to dial back the rhetoric and all the talk of near war on the peninsula, missile strikes on the continental united states. did he hear that message? is that why we're seeing all of this? even some north korean experts say kim jong-un was pa

alison? >> is it true that texas authorities warned that they could plot to hurt law enforcement officials and police thought there could be a link between hasse and ebil who is connected to killing the prison director in colorado? are they telling you anything about that? >> this is one of those things where there is a great deal of uncertainty surrounding these cases. but having said that, there has been, initially after the assistant prosecutor was gunned down at the end of january, authorities say that they were suspecting that a white supremacist group was behind that aattack. then we saw or have heard that authorities here in texas have been comparing notes with investigators in colorado to see if evan ebil the man they suspect gunned down the colorado prison chief, those cases were related and now you add this case to all of that. no direct links have been tied yet, but it has been clear that perhaps there have been investigators sharing notes, comparing notes between all of these case

victor, alison? >> jim, we saw the photographs just a few seconds ago of kim jong-un with four generals behind him and the map in the background talks about targets in the u.s. what is the likelihood that kim jong-un and his army could pull that off? >> in a word, zero. they cannot hit the u.s. mainland with what they have now. if they were to launch that missile that they put up to put a satellite in orbit, they'd have to leave it on the launch pad probably ten days as they fueled it up. they simply don't have the capability, they're too vulnerable, but they do have medium and long-range missiles with a range of about 1,300 miles the longest ones and that does put guam and japan within range, those missiles work and there are concerns over that, the concerns are over the more low level things they could do, the cyber attacks like we saw in the banks, the incident like the "cheonan" that was lost in 2010, those are things that south korea and the u.s. are keeping a close eye on tonight. >> jim clancy

alison kosik at the new york stock exchange. will today's jobless numbers impact trading you think? >> you can count on that with this upside surprise. this report was certainly a big beat at least that's the way wall street sees it. we certainly saw the reaction in market futures, they went from 40 points for the dow up to 100, expect about a 70-point higher open for the dow when the bell rings in about a half hour, and when you look at how this trend has been for the jobs report as the jobs reports held their own the markets reacted in tandem reacting to the better than expected numbers. there was a triple-digit rally when the january jobs number came out. it really does seem to be the path of least resistance, meaning that upward trend with the dow breaking new records every single day this week. one analyst puts it this way, he says as we get further and further from the crisis, confidence continues to build, and everybody has this thought where they want to get on this train before it leaves the station. 'kind of hard to find the bears out there but they are out there because d

alison kosik has more. alison. not good news, why are public school students paying so much?e days. you know what it seems to be, there's a perfect storm of factors going on. the main reason is that state government these days are actually cutting how much money they are giving to schools. at the same time, the schools are costing more. these tuition costs are rising. there's a report now from the state higher education executive officers foundation and here's what it found. it found that average state funding per student fell 9% last year. that as these average tuition costs went up more than 8%. that's been a huge hit to parents and students, many of whom were already struggling to pay in the first place. when you break it down state by state and look back even further, the numbers are more stunning. in georgia, the average cost of tuition has gone up almost 78% since 2007. in new mexico, it's up almost 55%. so the big question of course, are these costs going to keep on rising. there's the silver lining for you. the president of the group, which actually compiled the repor

alison kosik is there for us. alison, what's happening? hey, fredricka and michael.ou know, it's at that point where the bulls have sort of run out of steam. you're seeing investors kind of take a breather at this point after stocks have had a great run-up for the past, what, ten sessions. the session is still young. four more hours for stocks to maybe even turn around. so that very well could happen, but we are still watching the dow because it very well could turn around and hit that 11th record in a row. also the s&p 500, that's within striking distance of its all-time high. the magic number for the s&p 500 is 1,565. five points away. that would actually be a bigger deal than the dow if the s&p 500 hits this record even blows through that record because the s&p 500 isn't just 30 stocks like the dow. it's 500 stocks. so what it is is it's more representative of the health of the market. also, your mutual funds, they most likely track the s&p 500. so as we watch the s&p 500 although it's a little lower, overall it is, you know, moving at great strides these days. yo

alison kosik is at the new york stock exchange. dow up, up, and i noticed earlier too the s&p hitting an intraday high. what's behind it all? >> you know, part of the reason you're seeing stocks, this trend moving higher is because some pockets are improving. you're seeing improvement in consumer spending, the housing market. not so much in the jobs market. what is really moving the markets higher is sheer momentum. it's getting a big push from the continued flow of fed stimulus money pushing down interest rates and sending investors to the best investment out there and that's stocks. that's really what's created this stellar first quarter. look at the returns that have come out of the first quarter. the dow is up 11%. the nasdaq is higher. the s&p 500 has climbed almost 10% higher and the s&p 500 just broke through its all time high and is making history today. it broke through the all time high set in october of 2007. that is just sheer momentum helping this trend of stocks moving higher as well. but remember, this is a market th

and then alison kosik. what is interesting is all this great news. the market was like, eh. >> reporter: yeah, exactly. you know what, i did see the dow pop at the open. some of the spirit, the celebration is fizzling out. the dow continues to reach the record highs. this is the fourth day in a row. the question is, will it close on a record high? one trader puts it this way, though. the jobs data is more significant than this record high that the dow is hitting every day. they're feeling more encouragement. because they're seeing the jobs day that that came out all week. and those jobless claims numbers are going down. all of those reports are matching ha the government is saying today. the increase in government in 230,000 jobs last month. this trader says this is a real sign of progress. one reason you may see the celebration mr. muted is because the focus is on the bank stress tests that the fed released yesterday. the federal reserve put the country's biggest banks under what's known as stress tests to see in a hypothetical situation if the nati

let's bring in alison kosik at the new york stock exchange to talk more about this.ning. low interest rates are helping, making it easier to borrow money, especially for people looking to buy homes after they lost their last home to foreclosure. here's why. when you have late payments on mortgages, when you have to foreclosure on your house, when you sell at a short sale, all of that messes up your credit big time and foreclosure can knock up to 160 points right off of your credit score. if you've got a lower credit score, that means you're at a higher risk of default and have to pay a higher interest rate. sometimes an interest rate that's really sky high. there's plenty of evidence that foreclosed home owners are coming back into the market now. typically, banks making them wait seven years, the penalty box, before they approve a new mortgage. but lenders are trying to work with people to bring them back into the market sooner than the seven years. they are taking into account extenuating circumstances, maybe a divorce, layoff, health issue, other one-time events.

alison dean is sounding the alarm on this rally. has more than 25 years of investment management. >> alison started at age i just want to make sure. age 1. go ahead, alison. >> you say there's some headwinds that could be facing us. i feel like so many strategists come on and say there's head winds. i started my career around the '87 crash, and so many people were out of the market crash, and so many was chase rallies. post-2000, i'm seeing almost the same behavior post-'87. it's not as bad as people thought. people are getting into the market. i think they're panicking in to some degree. >> when you say pause, what kind of pause are we talking about? a 10% pause? >> i think 5% or 10%. maybe a lot of volatility through the spring and um isssu. >> the way you're positioned, you're recommending small caps, regional banks. these are sectors when the market is rallying, not when it's pausing. why would you recommend them now? >> my sense f we're going through a choppy volatile period, start buying these names that are much more cyclical

alison kosik joins us live from the new york stock exchange. alison, it looks like the markets are firing on all cylinders. >> jake, the economy may not be but the market certainly is. you look at the dow. starting a few weeks ago it's been hitting record high after record high. today it was the s&p 500's turn to make history. look at the s&p 500. it broke through the 1565 level. the all-time high set in october, 2007. it hit that and blew past it today. this is a big day, because it is the last day of the first quarter. i'll tell you what. what a stellar quarter it's been. look at the dow up 11% since the beginning of the year. the nasdaq is higher. the s&p 500 is up 10%. you know, this market really seemed to be riding a nice wave even when there is bad news to turn the market around the market shrugged it off. so for now the path of least resistance seems to be upward. helping stocks in the first quarter definitely netflix. if you own netflix you're doing pretty well. shares have more than doubled in value since the beginning of the year. sh

alison kosik at the new york stock exchange. alison, is this a case of what goes up must come down or does it continue going up, up, up? >> reporter: that is the unspoken rule. what goes up must come down. in times like this, brooke, we like to look back, to look forward. take a walk with me. i'll warn you, the picture isn't pretty. look what happened two years after the dow peaked in 2000. it tumbled because of the dotcom bust. in 2007, the dow peaked again, but in one and a half years it came crashing down. blame the financial crisis for that. and both cases the declines were big, 40% to 50%. now we're at a new record high, the big question, should we expect the same kind of dropoff? thankfully probably not. the good news is a majority of analysts expect a smaller pullback this time around, closer to 10 to 15%. we shall see. >> alison kosik, thank you. >>> hockey fans, heads up. look at this video here. new york rangers versus the philadelphia flyers, last night. puck goes flying off a hockey stick, watch with me, and, boom, h

alison kosik is live in concord, new hampshire.sampling the weather for us this morning. >> and it's quite beautiful, zoraida. you know, if there's going to be a late-winter snowstorm with spring literally tomorrow, this is the way to really do it. yeah, the snow is falling at a pretty good clip, but look how picturesque this is. how pretty is that? almost like a postcard. here in concord, new hampshire, they've got this snow thing down to a science. the plows have been going back and forth on the downtown streets here. they've done a really good job clearing the street, getting ready for the morning commute. here's what's expected today. heavy accumulations are expected to continue throughout the day here in concord up until midnight tonight, of about an inch or more every hour. so, yeah, they're expected to get up to a foot or even more by the time all is said and done. but this is a pretty snow. look how pretty it is. and you don't have that blowing wind going on. so it's not uncomfortable to stand out here, zoraida. >> i'm lovi
