alison kosik with answers. >> the u.s. is three days away from the debt ceiling deadline. the possibility of default sparking concern of potential economic turmoil around the world. >> if there was a bomb lifting the debt ceiling, it could we'll be that what is now a recovery would turn into a recession. or even worse. >> here at home, a default could mean a serious hit to your investments. like your 401(k), wall street now waiting on washington to dictate the trades as banks are predicting the s&p 500 could see painful losses as high as 45% if an agreement isn't reached. here in chicago, we've seen the housing market really pick up here in the last year. and like many.places, that has been helped by low interest rates for people looking for loans. but all of that could change if the government defaults because interest rates on home loans could spike or even worse, we could see another credit squeeze making it much harder to borrow. >> a default also means interest rates for credit cards and student loans wos spike, as well as payments from the government would the dry up

alison kosik is at the new york stock exchange. okay. this is really strange. >> reporter: it is really strange. and is it just me, carol, or does toyota seem ahead of the competition in making their cars we web-enabled? it took me a long time to think of that. laugh a little better. thanks. and here's what's really funny. these spider problems are not a new phenomenon for cars, because cars have a lot of tubes. it means there are a lot of nooks and crannies for spiders to build their wednesday. 2011, mazda had to recall cars because of a spider issue and now it's toyota, recalling 870,000 vehicles, and it's not all because of spiders, but it is part of the problem. and here's what happens. it causes a sort of cascade of problems. the webs block a drainage tube from the air conditioning condenser, that causes water to just kind of drip down. it can lead to a short-circuit. so what do you get? you get the air bag warning light coming on. also, here's what scary. the air bag can unexpectedly deploy. that is serious. and in some cases, even

cnn's alison kosik is joining us from the new york stock exchange. what's the reason for this?n tax filers will get some extra time? >> reporter: extra time, i have to laugh about that. this is the irs. i doubt they would ever give extra time and this includes this time, either, as well. the deadline is going to stay the same. april 15th for your filing, has to be in by april 15th. this warning that you're talking about is for the early birds. these are people who file their returns as soon as they can, many of them are looking forward to getting refunds so they like to file early. the irs is going to begin taking these tax returns sometime between january 28th and february 4th. previously it was on january 21st. the official date is going to be announced in december. why is this happening? why else. the shutdown. so it came at the time of the year when the irs is busy preparing the tax system. they are processing 150 million tax returns. that's a huge undertaking so what happens is in the fall, they begin testing the system out, updating it. they didn't get a chance to do that

alison, what's the driving force behind all of this? wall street's finally able to focus its attention away from the dysfunction in washington and actually focus on other things like earning season. earning season for the third quarter has been under way. and some solid earnings came in from morgan stanley, from ge and google. google topping $1,000 a share. a jaw-dropping $1,008 for one measly share. it's a record high for google. look how the company has been moving since it went public nine years ago. if you bought in nine years ago, one share of google back then was $85. if you bought a bunch and held on to it, you're sitting pretty today. today's jump for google is happening because it had some good earnings. sales beat expectations. as for the overall market, there is still some nervousness on wall street. it's kind of quiet. not big gains because the reality is wall street only kicked the proverbial can down the road. it still hasn't worked out the long-term debt issues plaguing this country. it's leaving some uncertain in the mar

alison kosik joins from us new york.e knew it was coming. >> as are the new frontier of social media sites. if you want to be on the social media sites got to get used to dealing with the ads so instagram is the latest, the photo sharing site saying yesterday it's going to start displaying ads to select users over the next couple of months. it says it's going to ease us all into this, going to start slow and promises beautiful, high quality photos that feel natural to instagram. not such a shocker here this is happening. instagram's parent company facebook started integrating ads into news feeds a few years ago. what makes this different is that instagram is going to deliver these ads to users regardless of their interests, whereas facebook tries to tailor them a bit more based on what you've liked or followed. this is important because this is really where the money is at for the social media sites. mobile ad revenue is big business for all the social media companies. it makes up a huge, huge portion of their revenue. f

alison kosik joins us from new york. who's behind this?k into the president's twitter account? >> all good questions. this was pretty bold. the group that has claimed responsibility is known as the syrian electronic army. what they told cnn in a statement is ofa, meaning president obama's organizing for action campaign, the links that were posted on twitter and facebook were hacked and redirecteded to a video showing the truth about the syria. now, the group claims that it also got access to a bunch of other e-mail accounts in addition to the my barack obama.com and donate barack obama.com websites. now, the two manipulated tweets, those where is actually retweeted hundreds of times on monday before web detectives could get the links directed back to their intended targets and the hackers broke in by somehow getting ahold of the president's campaign account credentials. hala? >> all right, alison kosik, thanks very much in new york. speaking of syria, the bad news continues for that country. the world health organization now says that is p

there you see the dow jones industrials up about 40 points, alison kosik is over at the new york stock exchange. alison, talk a little bit about the investors and why they're not reacting more positively or negatively to these latest numbers. >> you see it a little more positively. the s&p 500 still in record territory. the way wall street sees this is sort of skewed. it stees bad news as good news because -- let's look at the job report. it's weak. it was underwhelming as far as wall street sees it. it's disappointing. the expectation is the fed will continue pumping that stimulus money into the economy so the fed will continue to act as a safety net. that pushes stocks higher, smashing new records every day and yeah, i know we talk about the dow which did hit plenty records earlier this year. now it's the s&p 500's turns more representative of stocks. it includes 500 stocks instead of 30 the dow has. it's what your retirement funds mostly track. it's at another record high today, the fourth day in a row. you look how it's doing for the year, it's up more than 20%. a normal gain for t

joining us live from the new york stock exchange is cnn's alison kosik. >> what a day.nd didn't look back. just in today's trade, this one trading day, the gains almost wiped out everything that was lost since the shutdown started on october 1st, missing by a meager three points. this was a day investors bought in on word that progress is being made on capitol hill to come up with some sort of solution to the debt ceiling, even if that means it's a short-term band-aid for wall street, it's good enough. the rally came actually despite the first hard numbers that are showing how the shutdown is affecting americans. first time claims for unemployment benefits jumped by a whopping 66,000 last week, all the way up to 374,000, and about a quarter of those filing those claims, 15,000 people, they were people filing for benefits because they were directly impacted by the shutdown. most of them are private sector employees who are contracted out by the government from places like lockheed martin and united technologies, for example. these are employees who were furloughed, about

. >> for that, we bring in alison kos kosik.g. >> good morning, you're seeing investors around the world talking about it. you're seeing world markets optimistic that a deal could get done. time is not on washington's side. lawmakers, they are racing against the clock to put a deal together that would actually pass the senate and the house. right now we are seeing stock futures in the u.s. higher across the board. but that's after we saw a big selloff on wall street yesterday when things kind of went south on house negotiations that are looking to avoid a debt ceiling disaster. remember, treasury secretary jack lew said tomorrow is the day that the u.s. will run out of money to pay all its debts until the debt ceiling is raised. jack lew has said i'm out of magic tricks. out of them by tomorrow. it's estimated that the u.s. is going to have about $30 billion on hand tomorrow. plus, there's going to be money coming in from tax receipts. so remember that the 17th isn't necessarily a drop dead date as far as the default goes. wall

first, let's get to alison kosik at the new york stock exchange. happy to see you standing in a normal place, not a subterranean vision out of dante as some of us worried it might be. kind of dicey leading up to the end of this week but a strong finish. >> oh, a strong finish. the markets are up big time for the week. the major averages are up anywhere from 1% to 3%. one trader telling me look, wall street is like a voting booth and this was wall street's way of telling washington good, you finally got your act together. well, not really, because the uncertainty is still there in the market because the same issues are going to come up in january. but still, the market is focusing on other things. third quarter earnings, good earnings coming from morgan stanley, google, as you said, google hitting this stunning new record high of over $1,000 for one share of google. then there's another record. that other record you mentioned, the s&p 500 closing at a second record high, second time in a row, this adding to an already amazing year for the index whic
