nbc's alison barber is in pontiac, michigan with the latest. i'm also joined by co-host of "money court". she's also an msnbc legal analyst. alison, we'll start with you on the ground in michigan. we should point out the artist has not been charged with a crime. what more can you tell us about him and where the rest of the case stands this morning? >> reporter: craig, this weekend started with a man hunt here in oaklan county. it ended or part of the story ended about 1:30 a.m. saturday at a warehouse in detroit. that is where police say they found the couple of the accused, the parents of the accused shooter ethan crumbley in a warehouse that is owned by, used by an artist by the name of andre sakora. so police -- they say that the couple had withdrawn $4,000 from an atm and essentially disappeared until they found them early, early saturday morning. an attorney for the artist says that the artist did not know about the charges the couple faced. he says he knew the crumbleys through shared hobbies. according to his lawyer, the suspect asked to

beginning with the latest on the omicron variant, alison barber is in new york.g us is dr. nucar. talk about this disturning rise in cases. it comes as we just heard bill deblasio announce a plan to reopen schools with a ramped up testing policy. what are e we talking about for cases and how are they handling the surge right now? >> in new york city there has been a five fold increase. and half of them are under the anyone of five, they're not eligible, yet, to be vaccinated. the new york department of health are looking at these numbers and they found it so concerning they put out an alert to parents calling this a striking increase and warning parents as well as doctors and health care workers that interact with and treat children to pay attention to this speaking to other doctors in the new york area they're saying the same thing and they're saying they're worried about what they're seeing in their hospitals. >> 97% of the hospitals are full with children that are not vaccinated. if parents want to do right by their child, they need to vaccinate everyone in th

joining us now from kentucky is nbc correspondent kathy park in mayfield and alison barber in dawsonll without power. the governor talked about and the progress on utilities. many have no homes to go back to and said the state parks are open to them. how are things in mayfield? >> reporter: the landscape here is changing, andrea. you have crews out here just clearing off the the sidewalks, the roadway es. really kind of ramp up the rebuilding efforts. you're taking a look at downtown mayfield right now, and keep in mind, the entire infrastructure of this community was destroyed when the tornado came through. so not only did they lose power, they also lost their water tower, natural gas lines also shut off, but there is some sign of progress. in fact, i was told earlier this morning, if you take a look, andrea, these are new power lines that have been installed. so they are quickly jumping into action to get this community back up and running once again, but when you look around here, andrea, there is still so much devastation, so much history that was destroyed in just a matter of mi

alison barber is in new york square as new york city takes testing to the subways. and we also are at la guardia airport. the president talked about omicron earlier today. what's the latest from the white house? >> when we heard from the president at the start of this month talking about an expected surge of cases largely at the time about the delta variant, we heard him again last week talking about how his administration was responding to this omicron surge. and then again today as he was preparing to leave the white house for this holiday week to come here, there was a common refrain, that december of 2021 looks a lot different than december of 2020. that yes, we are still very much dealing with this pandemic. and we're expecting now a significant as we're already seeing, a surge in cases but we have so many tools at our disposal to try to deal with this. that primarily means the vaccine, of course, millions of americans have been vaccinated. the overwhelming majority of country has. they're trying to push more americans to get boosted. but one of the real strugg

alison barber has been following the story for us from pontiac, michigan.e latest updates? are we talking about the artist, or is it beyond that? >> it seems it could go beyond that. specifically when the prosecutor was asked about possibly charges for the school or school officials. she didn't give a direct yes or no. only saying the investigation is ongoing. a man hunt started on friday here in oakland county, and it ended saturday around 1:30 a.m. at a warehouse in detroit. police say jennifer and james crumbley, the parents of ethan crumbley withdrew $4,000 from an atm and essentially disappeared. their attorneys say they intended to turn themselves in at some point, because both of them are each charged with four counts of involuntary manslaughter. their attorneys say it was just a matter of logistics. police, prosecutors, even a judge, they were not buying that argument. a judge set their bail at half a million dollars each once they were captured and detained by police officers and were arraigned. they have pled not guilty to all the counts, but the
