alison kosik at the new york stock exchange. ll me about the study. >> first of all, 51% of americans, don, they consider themselves part of the middle class today. that's down from 54% ten years ago. so you see how it's kind of getting smaller and smaller. and if you are in the middle class, chances are you feel worse off now than you did ten years ago, because of the recession. and now there's that hard new evidence of how tough it is for these families right now. a pew research center found that the median incomes fell by 5% from the years -- that 2000 to 2010. that's as household wealth, also known as net worth, fell by more than 45 percent. in the meantime, median wealth for the upper income group, that staid about the same. and a by chunk of middle class people, they were surveyed, and they said it's more difficult these days just to maintain their standard of living compared to ten years ago. you know, it's just hard to keep up. don? >> absolutely. and i spoke with rick newman, of "u.s. news & world report," alison, just l

alison kosik with a reality check.t are some of the positive developments that everyone can agree on? >> okay, fredricka. so, yeah, the economy has certainly been sending a lot of mixed signals. let's start with sort of a temperature check on key readings. for one, housing, it is one of the biggest cornerstones of the economic recovery. it is what drove us into the recession in the first place. many say it's really what we need for a true comeback to take hold. and believe it or not, it's been one of the few bright spots recently. foreclosures have been slowing and home prices are slowly rising. it's more of a mixed picture. on the plus side, employers did add 163,000 positions in july that rebounded from a few weak months but the unemployment rate went up and the sectors at added positions were lower paid areas and this was a problem because you really want to see job gains in these more higher paying areas, so those people can really go out and pump more money in the economy. fredricka? we have seen this before. the

alison kosik is at the stoke exchange. >> they are starting to foreclose on the banks.homeowners associations will get their money. they have to get them to pay up. we spoke to one lawyer in florida who is per suing cases like this. 90% is more than 1100 other cases have ended with the homeowners association getting their money plus legal fees were reimbursed. for them it's worth it. they rely on this money for their revenue. >> is it odd that the banks reclaiming property from people that don't pay up are now failing to pay up themselves? so have the banks responded. >> ironic. the banks don't have any incentive to pay unless they are forced to. there's a group in florida called community advocacy network or c.a.n. a spokeswoman said they need to create a downside, a punishment for these banks who don't pay. it's much easier said than done. we did reach out to two of the big banks that were named. j.p. morgan said they are committed to stabilizing communities that have been hit hard and they pay their dues on properties that have been owned. >> thank you very much. >>>
