alison kosik takes a look at what this indictment could mean for fedex. >> reporter: fedex shipped 10ges a day all over the world. now, some of those packages have gotten the company into trouble. fedex has been indicted for knowingly shipping prescription drugs to dealers and addicts from illegal online pharmacies. the charges come after a nine- year federal investigation. according to the indictment, fedex knew something shady was going on. aggressive customers, who would jump on trucks, threaten drivers and demand their shipments immediately. in response, fedex had customers pick up certain packages instead of delivering them. fedex says it's innocent and will plead not guilty to the charges. in a statement, the shipping giant says, quote, we continue to stand ready and willing to deport and assist law enforcement. we cannot, however, do the job of law enforcement ourselves. fedex also says it has repeatedly asked the dea for a list of illegal online pharmacies, but has never been given a list. according to the government, the indictment highlights the importance of holding corpora

cnn business correspondent alison kosik is at the new york stock exchange to tell us more. >> microsofts trying to be a leaner tech giant. the ceo announces the cuts this morning and says the first step to building the right organization for our ambitions is to realign our workforce, the overall results of these changes will be more productive and impactful teams across microsoft. the company has 127,000 employees, amounting to 14% of its workforce. it got about 25,000 of the employees after it bought nokia back in september and the biggest chunk of these cuts actually comes from nokia, amounts to about 12,500 workers. some of those positions are professional, the other are factory workers. just keep this in mind, this sounds shocking the 18,000 but it's very common for companies to cut jobs when they acquire another company, but the thing is, microsoft especially job cuts are rare, the last time microsoft had a major cut it happened in 2000 the during the recession when it laid off more than 5,000 employees. carol? >> you know, some current and former employees say that microsoft has a

cnn money's alison kosik is live at the new york stock exchange this morning. alison, are we going to touch that 17,000 mark today do you think? >> reporter: stocks have already touched it and crossed it so for the first time ever you're seeing the dow beyond 17,000, actually sitting at 17,028. nothing like a stellar jobs report to get to that psychological milestone. the question is, though, will the dow close at that level. i was talking to some traders today. he said you may see some resistance. we're seeing the dow get to 17,000 and cross that 17,000 mark, doesn't mean it's necessarily going to close there. what you're seeing happening now as far as the jobs report, though, goes, investors are kind of pulling apart the report right now, looking at what kinds of jobs people were getting, were they mostly low earning positions or were these middle income or higher income spots. the good news is that a lot of these gains for these job gains i'm talking about were broad-based, most were in the professional and business services areas. those were good paying jobs

alison kosik has the latest from new york.rosoft ceo satya nadella promised bold changes, and he wasn't kidding. the software giant announced thursday it would cut 18k jobs in the next year -- or 14% of its workforce. with the first 13k of the layoffs happening in the next 6 months. the cuts are part of nadella's vision for a leaner microsoft. in a memo to employees, he writes: "the first step to building the right organization for our ambitions is to realign our workforce the overall result of these changes will be more productive, impactful teams across microsoft." the bulk of the layoffs -- 12,500 -- are employees microsoft inherited when it bought nokia. nadella saw many overlapping positions, both in factories and on the professional side. microsoft is attempting to shift its focus to mobile and cloud computing. rivals google and apple have been beating out microsoft in those markets. this is the largest round of layoffs in the company's history, costing them up to $1.6 billion dollars. but nadella says it's a necessary n
