alistair friend of a back-and-forth, back-and-forth.iraq in gulf countries don't get along well at all. they quite profoundly disagree about whether iran is good guy or bad guy. so how would you imagine here we've engaged, tried to modernize the military, made this huge investment in bringing iraq institutions back online. how would you imagine the iraqis playing in a contingency with respect to iran? >> guest: that's a completely unanswered question. iraq is in a transition. and there's hope that eventually the gulf states will come around. there is a sunni shia issue, which is the fundamental divide in their mistrust of iraq. but on the other hand they are arabs, not persians even on malki, prime minister malloch e. has been somewhat supportive where ryan crocker is sitting with them and said, did you -- they're watching a think president ahmadinejad, the iranian president on tv and says, he needs a translator. he spent a lot of time in iran during the iran-iraq war in the 1980s and has been surprised he didn't learn farsi. what life
