nbc's alistair jameson joins us from london. what can you tell us? >> good morning, dara. this was a routine flight, a short trip from alexandria to cairo. the flight takes around 30 minutes. some point in that flight one of the passengers on board told the flight clue crue he had explosives on, a suicide vest and the flight was diverted across the mediterranean and landed at larnaca. once on the ground, negotiations began to release almost all of the passengers. it's still not clear what motives lay behind this hijacking. the cyprus president said it's nothing to do with terrorism and a high-level source told nbc news that the hijacker's motives seem to be a personal matter involving a woman and the hijacker asked to speak to someone, possibly his ex-wife. what we know is there are still around eight people on board that plane. most of the passengers are off. but around eight people are still on board. that consists of the crew and three passengers who are believed to be nonegyptians. they are foreigners, we don't know their nationality, but they're still on board the pla

alistair, update us on what we now know about these three men. that's right, ari.is information coming out from law enforcement sources in belgium within the past hour. what we know about these guys is this najim lashiri who is on the run, he's the guy on the right, that image, is that he was linked to the paris attacks. he was involved with the attackers. he was in contact with them. he traveled in september of last year through europe from syria where he's been for a couple of years. he entered through boarders across hungary and austria, traveled to belg yam. he was in contact with those who are directly involved in the attacks in paris on that night in november. so he has been someone that authorities have wanted since those paris attacks took place. and yet he has been not only on his own, but as so it would seem in belgium, despite authorities carrying out multiple terror raids in brussels and arrest heing some 18 people which just goes to illustrate the huge extent and the capacity of this terror cell. the other two deceased bombers are brothers that are on

we have alistair jamison with nbc news in the london bureau. alistair, what information do you have about this hijacking? >> yeah, absolutely. one thing we have had in the last few minutes is confirmation from the airline that this plane was carrying 81 passengers and crew. it was en route from alexandria to cairo. and has now been on the ground in larnaca for around about an hour this morning. and the airline's saying that negotiations are under way. no more information from egyptair at the moment as to what that means. but we are seeing information from lawmakers and officials on the ground in cyprus saying that those behind this have offered to release some of the passengers, women and children, if police and law enforcement move away from the aircraft. that's all unconfirmed information. nbc news has not been able to confirm that but that's come from a lawmaker on the ground there. in cyprus. so we don't know any more about what is behind this hijacking, what the aims are, what they're trying to do there. but we do know at least that the pl
