alisyn: in for megyn kelly.e learning president obama met privately with two leading republicans sunday. house speaker john boehner and majority leader eric cantor. the president says it's working. bret baier joins me now. this is interesting. after last week's big public meeting where there were cameras and lots of lawmakers and photo opportunities and that didn't go so well. now our private meeting the answer? >> they have been happening. we knew speaker boehner had a couple of them and there had been a couple talks between president obama and speaker boehner. the fact that they met privately over the weekend with the president we don't know exactly how much they hammered out as far as details. but hearing from the white house that this meeting went well, and you just heard the president saying what he said about progress is being made. that said, when you go up to capitol hill and you talk to lawmakers there is a divide here over what is happening and whether progress is being made. because as you know, the c

alisyn: okay. >> thank you. alisyn: we're 8 days away. it's not encouraging. i don't like the fact you have the republican leadership and the house working on its own idea and the senate leadership working onitis own idea, at the end of the day a party line approach will not work and has to get through both houses, i'm concerned after the break down this weekend. we have to avoid defaulting on our debt, our top priority has to be the american economy and what we can do to get the economy moving again and the uncertainty is crippling us and it is harming us around the world and will result in a lower bond rating, it will result in higher interest rates, and we need to keep our focus on getting this done, in a way that improves our economy and i see us getting away from that and it concerns me enormously. alisyn: harry reid said he'll present a proposal based on media reports, it will include $2.7 trillion in cuts. do you know any more about what the democratic proposal looks like. >> i don't and i don't know how much of that will also enco

alisyn: i'm alisyn camerota in more megyn kelly.told the president will have a stern warning for lawmakers involved in these negotiations. this just hours before another sitdown at the white house is scheduled. republicans and democrats haling with president obama on a solution to the debt. 55% of the americans say the deal should not include a tax increase. 34% say it should. that number is split 50-50 among folks making more than 75,000 a year. scott, tell us what you make of the latest numbers. have they changed recently? >> they haven't changed a lot. americans are deeply concerned about the debt ceiling issue. 75% of americans say sit would be bad for the country if there is a default. but 52% say it will be even worse if the debt ceiling is raised and no long-term spending cuts are made. they don't believe what the politicians from either side are saying. alisyn: a poll by gallup found 62% of americans if you combine the middle two categories. the question is how would you prefer to see congress redice the national debt? only
