aljazeera is in the capitol. unless congress comes to an agreement, the government will shut down october 1. with just one week to go, how likely is a compromise? >> it's really anyone's guess at this point, although we did get a little closer to seeing what will happen in the senate this week. next monday night, the government runs out of money. unless congress can come up with a compromise on issues, the federal government will shut down. we haven't seen anything like this since the clinton administration. federal workers won't get paid. members of the military won't get paid, but will net i.o.u.s. if you want to get a passport, that's going to be a tough reach. the markets could feel real repercussions if congress doesn't come to terms with things. there's a lot riding on this, a lot in play. republicans in the senate, some tea party conservatives, like we usually see coming out of the house of representatives are holding a line and saying they will not support a budget deal unless obamacare, the federal law,

aljazeera's randall pinkston joins us from washington, d.c. what is the likelihood of a shutdown at this point? >> well, one financial services company is saying it's increased about 40%. let's take a quick look at the backdrop here. we are looking at the conclusion of the nation's fiscal year, september 30, when the government runs out of money. then the other key data is mid october, when this nation will hit its debt ceiling limit. failure to fix either problem could result in a government shutdown. here's what house speaker john boehner has to say. >> there should be no conversation about shutting the government down. that's not the goal here. our goal here is to cut spending and to protect the american people from obamacare. it's as simple as that. >> now, speaker boehner says there should be no talk about a government shutdown. he knows if republicans carry through with their threat to defund the affordable care act, that democrats and president obama won't go for that, and so that would result in a shutdown. the second date, the debt ce

we are joined from an aljazeera correspondent in cairo. we are withholding her name for her own safety. what's happening there right now? >> this is a very significant ruling for the muslim brotherhood group. it's fortunate note that its ruling does not ban the group itself. it only bans its activities. saying it disrupted public safety and harmony. the court accepted that it had banned its activities, banned any known government organizations, the muslim brotherhood or any institution. any association funded by the group and any association that includes any muslim brotherhood board members, quite a widespread ruling. this could well mean that demonstrations and protest with charity work of the group... the interesting thing will be how this is enforced. protests have been going on for weeks now across the country. people have been arrested for attending these rallies. the egyptian process can be long and complicated and likely that this ruling could be appealed in other courts. >> thank you so much for joining us. you can follow the late

let's move to aljazeera's phil litner in syria. how is that affecting the talks rewarding syria today? >> well, that's an interesting development. how much that will affect the talks here, well, i'm not really sure, because we still have a huge gap between the russians and the united states. the russians are saying the fact that syria has agreed to sign on to that chemical weapons convention is enough for the global community to take away the threat of a military strike. the u.s. still stands by its position, that the syrians only sign or greed to sign that, and agreed to give up their weapons because there is the threat of a military strike, so to take that away would take away the syrian incentive to do that. the envoy to syria spoke about a possible reassumption of peace talks. frankly, unless this chemical weapons issue is resolved here, that political process is going to have an even harder time of succeeding. >> so, this is the million dollar question. where do we go from here, phil, what now? [ scoffs ] >> that is absolutely

aljazeera is live from nairobi. peter, can you clarify this discrepancy as to whether or not hostages are still in that mall? >> before we deal with that question, i want to bring you up to date. the past few minutes, we have heard very powerful explosions, the kind that you feel deep in your stomach rather than hear through the air. it clearly indicates something is going on. we don't know who set them off or what caused them. clearly there is still an ongoing crisis at the moment. it does seem as if some of those gunman of still alive. as far as the discrepancy is concerned, it's impossible for us to reconcile. we have two sources, the government and al shabab. the government says the hostages are released, al shabab says no, it still that some hostages. i guess you can make of that as you will. we would be inclined to believe the government, but at the same time, al shabab in the past has been relatively reliable in terms of the information they've been giving us. i really don't know how we can reconcile those tw
