our senior correspondent allan chernoff is joining us. you talked to one driver that took three hours to get one mile. >> reporter: there were some many traffic jams yesterday that during the day yesterday, the police eased up the blockades. they were permitting two lanes of travel in cases. not checking quite as carefully. this morning, it is back on. the noose is being tightened. i just went through one of the check points. every single car being checked by a series of police officers. to the south, also check points as well. coming out of the brooklyn battery tunnel that connects brooklyn to manhattan. cars are being told you cannot go north on this highway which passes right by ground zero. certainly very tight security. of course, we anticipated that before the anniversary. it's even a bit tighter than the plans that had been laid earlier on. >> allan, you are there at ground zero. expected to be tight there. the president is coming tomorrow. a lot of people will be there. is it the same as far as this lockdown and check points and g

let me turn to allan chernoff. you're at ground zero there and new yorkers, ten years of these anniversaries now, and here is another. many around the country might be wondering, well, they've been through this so many times before, what is the mood like? does the mood ever change the further we get away from 9/11 or is it kind of the same? >> well, t.j., it's a bit of here we go again. everybody knew we would have tight security coming up on the tenth anniversary, but with that terror threat, obviously it's exceedingly tight. the police have set up checkpoints throughout the city, especially in manhattan, checking vehicles as they drive, particularly as they drive towards downtown. also a big focus on times square as well. they've been pulling aside vans, trucks, checking the inside, using radiation detectors, even license plate readers as well to find any plates that are attached to stolen vehicles, perhaps. so very tight security. frankly, it's something that new yorkers have simply gotten used to over the past

i want to go straight to alan chernoff in new york. allangetting new information about possible suspects tied to this alleged terror plot around the 9/11 anniversary. what have you got? >> we've been talking about the potential for a truck bomb, a vehicle bomb in new york or washington, d.c. we have new information from my colleague susan candiotti who spoke to a u.s. government official briefed on this investigation. according to that information, the three people that are supposed to be be lined this alleged threat, two of them americans of arab descent. according to the official they entered the united states from the afghanistan-pakistan region last week. the u.s. has been using flight logs an manifests to confirm that information. the third individual believed to be traveling now in europe. again, these are described as credible, a credible threat, but again, not confirmed, meaning not confirmed by a second or third source to the united states. >> i think i heard you correctly. i want to make sure our viewers did as well. a little traff

i want to bring in allan chernoff who is standing by live following the different checks, the high, high vigilance there in the island of manhattan as people are coming and going. trucks, vans, allan, what are you seeing? what can you tell us? >> reporter: well, brooke, i can tell you that the terror threat you've been talking about is the reason we have so many of these checkpoints all over manhattan. we're at the beginning of the upper west side. there are checkpoints downtown, midtown and above us. further up the west side. it's really a traffic nightmare here. what's going on is that the police officers are visually inspecting cars as they go by. one by one we're merging here four lanes of traffic into one. they also are pulling aside trucks and vans if they believe there might possibly be anything suspicious. they're also wearing detectors, larger than my audio box here that can tell them if there's any radiation coming from the vehicle. those detectors will vibrate f anything were to be found. also, the other measures that will be taking they're checking license plates. not just vi

>> allan chernoff for us in new york city. thank you. turn to washington, d.c., and to the pentagon specifically where we're getting more about this potential threat. our correspondent barbara starr is here with me. you were giving me new information last hour. we're calling this a credible threat, i a specific even threat but not confirmed. but you're getting more specifics about how it came about. >> reporter: we are indeed, t.j. a u.s. official is explaining in detail why it is that the administration is saying credible threat, but not corroborated. here's our understanding of what has taken place. the u.s. intelligence community a few days ago intercepted communications from an al qaeda operative in pakistan and in that intercept, they heard discussion of this type of planned attack against new york or washington. a proposed attack, if you will. the al qaeda operative that they intercepted is someone that is known to them, that has been a source of credible information from secret intercepts in the past. they took it very seriously.
