i'm allen martin. >> and i'm elizabeth cook. we still don't know who did it. international terrorists or maybe homegrown. massachusetts state police searched a boston area apartment as a part of their investigation. they won't say what, if anything, they found. at least three people died in the attack, including an eight- year-old boy. people who were there described the scene as a war zone. it's now 2 a.m. in boston. but police are still out in full force. >> reporter: the latest development in this very active crime scene investigation, police are now telling us they are executing a search warrant in a suburban home in boston. they tell us the area is called revere, but they're not telling us much else, only that it is connected to the explosives that were detonated about three blocks from where i'm standing. the first bomb went off just before 3 p.m. near the finish line of the boston marathon, sending smoke into the air and runners and spectators to the ground. then, a second explosion went off two blocks away. medical personnel stationed at the finish lin

. >> for more on the conditions of the victims, nbc's ron allen is at mass general hospital, where many of the injured are being treated. what can you tell us about the range of injuries? >> the range of injuries is serious. there were about 30 people taken to hospitals yesterday, that were in serious, grave condition. here at mass general, they told us there are at least eight people who are in surgery and may have multiple surgeries in the days to come. as the doctor said in the sound clip that you aired, most of the injuries are lower extremities, damage to bones, tissue, a lot of damage from flying shrapnel. there were amputations that happened or partial amputations. some are in critical condition at some of the hospitals. there is the possibility that the death toll could increase. the bottom line is, this is going to be a situation that's going to go on for some time. one other point. the doctors said they are asking for donations of blood from the general public. they don't need it now. but they anticipate in the days and weeks ahead, they will because they're running for a lot
