i first met him when he was a student here at allen university in columbia and of course his hometown home church all in my congressional district. emanuel is just one block outside my congressional district. but he and i had a very close personal relationship. malcolm graham who has been on various shows this morning, his sister cynthia, is my daughter's -- was one of my daughter's best friends. she was a librarian, like my wife. and there's so much. middleton. her father. he called himself my a.m.e. campaign manager. he was just a great guy. so i know all of these people in a very personal way. >> congressman, you're from a generation that was in the middle of the civil rights movement. you saw the pain and the protests of the '60s. some of these attacks that took place in the '60s. did you think this was at all possible that something like this could happen in the 21st century? >> unfortunately, chuck, i did. i have been saying for some time now to my friends in the congressional black caucus will tell you i have been saying to them that there is a rightward drift in the country th

i met this young brilliant tall all star as he metriculated at allen university.er and i were classmates at allen, and his uncle the reverend laverne stevenson who later became presiding elder was my grandmother's pastor in columbia. reverend pinkney's great love for humanity and his passion for the kingdom of god moved him to use his natural talents and his spiritual giftedness to raise the moral consciousness of his congressional colleagues as well as faith communities. his unique calling emphasized the awareness of the injustices not only in the city of charleston but in the state of south carolina, the nation, and the world. his message was one of liberation and love for all people. his persona was soothing to the cries and concerns of the least of them. and to our children as well as our elders. his powerful voice was a voice of reason for the oppressed and the hopeless as well as the discouraged and the disappointing. he spoke up and spoke for those who could not speak for themselves as he recognized that they had no seat at the table. he had a genuine love

. >> reverend pinckney is a student i met at allen university here in colombia.ing young man. i just stoed my wife a couple weeks ago when we were at emanuel church participating in the service after walter scott's shooting. as we drove away i said you know i think that clementa is beginning to pursue more actively his role in the church rather than in politics. and i really felt that. he was just what we call a stand up kind of guy. who really felt strongly about his involvement with the church. the bishop placed him there and that church had such significance to the african-american community and going all the way back to the finding. and so he is going to be sorely missed. but, you know the longer i stayed in charleston yesterday, i'm finding out that all of these people as best as i can determine are my constituents, all nine of them. and five of them i knew very personally. reverend simmons, i've known him for a long long time. you're the same age. and so this was very very hurtful to find out all of this. i didn't know the reverend simmons was one of the vi
