was a regular theme for allender. we saw it on the protest sign of the suffragists being beaten by the sailor, and here where liberty directs the protestors to clear the way as men fight in the war abroad to secure democracy. allender used a common image of the v for victory symbol used to encourage work in munitions factories and gave it her own twist. may we not suggest victory? and another connection to jailed women with an inset poster that reads "mr. president, what will you do for women suffrage?" allender's covers challenged the prevailing notions about male protection and security, but she did so within the racial constraints of the progressive era. her covers show white reformers, white workers, white children, and the men with whom they resist such as the police officers and sailors are white. the railroad porter in this cover is not. the suffrage movement was plagued by racial animosity and prejudices like all elements of society in this era. allender did not give attention to the plight of african-american

allender drew reality. destitute mothers holding hungry children, jailed and beaten picketers, and suffragists campaigning for change. she had not experienced poverty but she had lived through her husband leaving her. abandoned but not alone, allender threw herself into the suffrage movement through local clubs in washington, d.c. and met influential leaders like alice paul. no matter her identity, when allender's cartoons gab gracing the covers of "the suffragist" in 1914 she had entered a journalistic world dominated by male writers, editors and artists. political cartooning has a long history. and i've noted a couple issues on this slide that commentators in the progressive era used to elicit debate. artists used machine politics, gender shifts, especially as more women engaged in activities connected with the male sphere of public policy like sitting on educational school boards. imperial designs and racist agendas to draw readers to their newspapers and forums. centerfolds from the political news magaz

we know that world war i propaganda posters influence allender's cartoons. and in turn suffragist was influenced by other movements. could you talk about the intersection between women worker groups, temperance groups and suffragist movement whether they were to compliment or react against each other. >> i think that we know that people -- a lot of women who were active in the suffrage movement were active in a lot of movements. a lot of women cut their tooth in women's clubs and in progressive -- a lot of the organizations, the progressive era, be they settlement houses or charity organizations or your city's society or church or local society for the betterment of any number of causes. you find a lot of women become frustrated. they're happy in what they're doing but they're frustrated in those movements because they reach a point where they can't make any more progress. and many come to believe that it's not because women aren't willing and women aren't working but because women don't lack a certain kind of power. it's power of the vote. they can't change
