narrator: the next day allen sought him out. he worked with the master artist and another apprentice every day after school. noro shinpei would become allen say's great teacher or "sensei." allen: when i went looking for him, i thought i was simply following the old japanese samurai tradition. at the age of 13 or 14 coming of age, the person will go out and look for a master to serve under. and in order to learn a craft, this is what we used to do in the old days. but when i grew up a little bit, i suddenly realized that wasn't what i was doing. i was trying to effectively replace my father. and i was incredibly lucky he obviously intuited that. narrator: the apprenticeship solidified allen's love of art. it paved the way for his career as an illustrator. in 1953, say's father came back into his life and took him to the u.s. but noro shinpei's influence on allen - whom he nicknamed "kiyoi" - was lasting. allen always held out hope that he would work again with his sensei. and it seems noro shinpei felt the same, as he told his d

today, we'll meet japanese-born illustrator and author allen say. he's written and illustrated dozens of children's books and he's won some of the highest honors in the field, including the caldecott medal. his stories are deep and personal. allen say: that is the time when i feel most vulnerable. i have no control over it. i have no idea how the viewer, the editor or the world in general, the publisher, is going to react to it. narrator: the twenty-third book allen say has both written and illustrated will soon be winging its way to scholastic books.

just ask allen alimon. he's here this afternoon. where's allen? he's around here. there he is, right there. [applause] allen was born in mexico -- [cheering] >> he was brought to this country by his parents when he was a child, growing up allen went to an american school, pledged allegiance to the american flag, felt american in every way. and he was. except for one, on paper. in high school, allen watched his frens come of age, driving around town with their new license, earning some extra cash from their summer jobs at the mall. he knew he couldn't do those things. but it didn't matter that much. what mattered to allen was earning an education so he could live up to his god-given potential. last year, when allen heard the news that we were going to offer a chance for folks like him to emerge from the shadows -- even if it's just for two years at a time, he was one of the first to sign up. and a few months ago, he was one of the first people in nevada to get approved. [cheers and applause] in that moment, allen said, i felt the fear vanish. i felt accepted. so tod

him, are you the tim allen. and he said yes, i am. but he wasn't, a different tim allen. and he shared that his foundation wanted to award a teacher for their work. i was pleasantly surprised this was being done. because so many times teachers tirelessly work without recognition. and then he shared that the teacher was michelle kyung. and i knew why they this chosen her. mrs. kyung has been a teacher at washington high school for 13 years. and has a da in history from san francisco state. she's a social studies teacher teaching modern world and ap psychology, and she's a driving force in our ap academy. we are very proud of her at washington high school. and it's excellent when your colleagues can stand up and say wonderful things about you. the principal and five former students and present students. there was a large article in the paper about her, and one student said that mrs. kyung shows huge role in education, and i look for someone to have impact on me. she educates with fun, she deserving this award beca
