in not only the research, but when i became director of the institute of the national institute of allergy and infectious diseases in 1984, there were people that were concerned, and i would say bordering on being angry with me, it it it was clear -- that it was clear that i wanted to put more research in it. i wanted to get more government resources, i wanted more government research, and it was clear that we needed to embrace the gay community, the activists, to see what was going on in the trenches. there was a lot of resentment toward me on that, resentment on part of the scientists, because they thought i was going to divert resources away from other areas of infectious diseases and i was arguing, i don't want diverge -- to diverge resources, i want new resources. as i argued in front of the president as to why we needed more resources for the disease. so that was that area of resentment. and then the activists playing a major role in some of the decision in policy making in a research program was completely foreign and antithetical to many scientists. at the time, scientist that we d
