going to be the first test site of the home program that will work to make all of the streets and alleyways along marshall elementary school safer for you to walk to. so i'm really excited about that. last night in our board meeting to be voted on this roughly around 9:00 p.m. last night. all 11 board of supervisors voted to make today officially october 5, 2011, walk-to-school today for the city and county of san francisco. and i'm going to quickly read accommodation, where as hundreds of children to be safe each year nationally by taking steps to make safety a priority. driving students to school by private vehicles worsens traffic, and that's due to safety and climate change. and protect children from health and environmental risk. shape-up san francisco, who's here today, including department of public health, san francisco municipal transportation agency, presidio ymca, san francisco bike coalition, have secured funding to implement stay safe at school and has declared october 5th as walk to school day for the city and county of san francisco. thank you to all of the family members and

as we have mentioned before, there is another total different character for our alleyways.hey were developed for the more low scale residential use. many are turn-of-the-century but they do have the traditional bay. notice we lack decks south of market, because it was not part of our architectural vocabulary. but there was a lot of street life happening in the alleys that is not according to normal urban design guidelines that tell you to maintain the street frontage, that tells you to match everything that is next to it. what we have tried to do in our design guidelines is actually break them down towards district. acknowledge that there's a different architectural vocabulary for our major streets than our alleys. in our alleys, we have a mix of uses. we have resident or character. but we also have our small scale industrial buildings. i entered south of market style, they often include greenery and their own setbacks. would you will be seeing before you -- i want to say that we have this booklet that says it, but we have had some developers bring preliminary projects to u

i'm also a volunteer at adopt an alleyway. i'm currently a freshman at san francisco state university. and i just graduated from galileo high school last year. >> congratulations. >> when i was in high school i used to take the 19 bus to get to school and i also took the 30 stockton to get from school to chinatown where most of my friends went to volunteer. the economic recession has made a lot of my friends' parents, have their hours cut from their jobs making it hard to find the money for their bus passes. this is a bad time because the price for youth passes has gone up 110% in the last two years. i know some people who aren't buying bus passes because it costs too much for their families. free muni would make sense because it -- because youth already using munis to get to school. this is why we need to have free muni for youth now. because it would help young people get to school. and get to parks and get to places to volunteer. this won't help me personally because i'm already 18. but i know it impacts the younger generat
