nato allies can do that.t was stated in the meeting today that diplomatic recognition is something which has to be conditioned on how the new government behaves and to what extent they live up to their international commitments. the message is reflected in the statement agreed by foreign ministers today. that is about the need for afghanistan to live up to commitments. the commitment in the agreement with the united states signed in february of 2020, or last year, where they stated they should not support or provide safe haven for international terrorist groups like al qaeda or isis. that's a very obvious and important commitment because nato, our main task in afghanistan has to be to prevent the country from becoming a platform for launching terrorist attacks against our own countries. for 20 years we have prevented such attacks from afghanistan against nato allied countries. we need to preserve those gains. we discussed how we can preserve those gains, including by stating clearly to the new afghan rulers,

we have different nato allies like norway, and many other allies. they have done what they can over several months to get the soldiers out but also to take back as much equipment as possible. some equipment has been destroyed. but i don't have the exact numbers with all the different allies in afghanistan and each ally has the responsibility for its own equipment and some has been destroyed. and some is in afghanistan. >> thank you very much. this concludes this press conference. what's the state of play among our other allies who are remain ing? i saw something this morning about the dutch ending their continued presence in afghanistan. what remains of the uk footprint? kind of who is left here to finish the job? >> reporter: yeah, garrett, that's exactly right. one by one by one, america's european and other allies are signaling their evacuations are coming to an end. the last canadian flight was happening today. last flight of civilians. we are expecting a relatively small number of canadian troops to be evacuated next. as i said, there's about 1,000 uk troops who are there, alongside u.s. soldiers, u.s. marines, manning the perimeter of this airport. the uk has had the second largest number of western forces in afghanistan after the united states. they have suffered the second largest number of casualties. there has been a lot of attention here that, you know, this 20-year war effort that britain has been involved in, beginning with tony blair, standing alongside george w. bush immediately after the september 11th attacks,

and start fighting for the allies. well none of these french soldiers would do that. they totally ignore girard. they thought he had no authority and they would only surrender if -- and join the allies if darlan told them to. so ike is facing a quandary here. he's got still in 1942 a very limited pool of resources to fight. he knows he's got a german army that is eventually going to be coming where he's -- for his troops. and now he's got to worry about whether he has to fight the french forces in north africa. and knowing that he does not have the resources to make an army of occupation out of what he has, and continue to fight the french and germans at the same time, he cuts a deal with darlan and says if you get the french forces to surrender and fight for us, then we will -- you will be named head of the french military and also you could have your title of head of the french government in north africa and west africa. on the surface, a very satisfactory deal but the problem as far as getting troops on to our side

they are hearing from so many of these allies. obviously, today with the committee kitchen abilities. this -- with the communication abilities. we have been raising the issue for months, if not years. we need to take a real round turn on making sure we are getting these allies out. we do not need to wait until the withdrawal was underway for this to be something to be working on. what have resulted in a better situation. host: according to a new leak state department cable, these are the latest evacuation numbers. the total manifested since midnight in kabul,, 483 american citizens, a total of 6916. the total manifest is 4407 american assistance, 21,583 afghans -- put 1533 afghans. --21,533 afghans. does that sound? -- does that sound low? guest: we are talking 80,000 afghan allies and family members that we promised to get out of the country who made every requirement that was required of them to achieve this application. they have done what they were asked to do. we have filled them. numbers -- failed them. the numbers are going

so that those visas for our afghan allies would be stuck in the system forever, so our afghan allies wouldn't be able to get out as they were planning to take out all u.s. troops whereupon they knew the afghan government would collapse. they deliberately sabotaged the process to make sure those afghan visas would not be processed in a timely manner. elizabeth newman under trump publicly confirmed the account of how it happened, the trump administration deliberately sabotaging the visas for the afghan allies which is why so many have been stuck all of this time. some has been hiding in plain sight. in 2019 a federal judge ruled the trump administration broke the law by radically dragging out the process of administering these visas and refusing to give answers to afghans and even members of congress who were inquiring on behalf of afghans who worked with u.s. troops and who had applied for the special visas. a federal judge ruled they broke the law by breaking the system so the visas would never get processed. it was hiding in plain sight that the system was broken under the trump adm
