ktvu's allie rasmus is on the scene where she has been talking to investigators. the last two hours. >> reporter: the search crews are getting ready to start their work any minute from now. if we zoom over to the other side of the delta mendota canal, you can see a group of people standing around what looks like a black box type object. that object is the sonar equipment that they are going to be using. they are going to be dropping that piece of equipment underwater. now, about half an hour ago we watched as some of the crews out here were getting that sonar equipment ready assembling it, putting it together. now, they are going to be getting some help from the state department of water resources. what they need to do, they tell me, is to stop the flow of water in this canal completely. the water needs to come to a complete stand still so that they can drop that piece of sonar equipment in. now, what crews are looking for is a silver toyota corolla. that vehicle is the car that jose esteban rodriguez was last seen driving. he was accused of aducting the little bo

. >>> ktvu channel 2 reporter allie rasmus is live with the programs that could be saved. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. cal baseball team started their practice on friday and it could be the last season that uc berkeley has a baseball team. we are expected to find out if cal baseball, mens, and womens and lacrosse will continue to exist on campus. the situation depends on private fundraising. they would eliminate the sports teams and said the move would save the university $4 million a year. last fall cal baseball started a fundraising campaign to save all three sports. >> they are going to go with a significant amount of money to the chains already to show him in hopes of good faith demonstrating that we are moving the needle in the direction of the numbers that it will take to get reinstatement into the athletic department. >> reporter: now alumni have been fundraising through a website they set up called savecalsports. they have raised more than $16 million. a university spokesman said yesterday that the group needs commitments for $25 million to be reinstate

ktvu channel 2 reporter allie rasmus is live with the programs that are in jeopardy. good morning, allie. >> reporter: good morning. the university is expected to make a decision some time today. right now we are sitting in front of the baseball field. this is where the team started their season practice over the weekend. but that team's future along with the future of the mens and womens gymnastics team and lacrosse team is at stake here. last year they decided to cut those teams and deboat the rugby team to a club sport. after that was announced a group of cal alumni got together to raise a campaign. now today is the university's self-imposed deadline to decide whether the money raised is enough. the alumni group called save cal sports says it has gathered more than $16 million in pledges. however a universities spokesperson said they need $that 25 million to go. >> they will go with a significant amount of money in hopes of good faith demonstrating we are moving the needle in the direction of the number it will take to get reinstatement into the athletic department

allie rasmus has more. >> reporter: this is the carnival cruise ship splendor right here behind us. you can see some of the repair work has already begun. there's two cranes working on the -- off the back end of the ship. if we pan down below that, we can see a large group of people walking along the ship. this pier pulled into pier 70 in san francisco yesterday. it's a bit infamiliar use, this shape made headlines a few months ago for some of the wrong reasons. back on november, a fire knocked out power to the entire ship. that left 4500 passengers s tranded on board without electricity, food or without working toilets. the cruise ship was on its way to baja, california when it happened. this ship is in the process of getting a new engine in san francisco. an incredible amount of work is going into those repairs. the deputy of the port says at any given time there are at least 800 people working to repair this ship. the people working are all local bay area workers. so the port deputy says this provides a boost to the low local economy. >> it will mean thousands of hours for prayer

allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. >>> we want to check in with sal, keeping a close eyen the commute. any slow spots in the east bay. >> there are a few spots in the east bay, let's take a look. slow spot, there it is. 880 northbound getting past the coliseum. this is part of the refacing and rebuilding. a lot of the projects between 92 and oakland are going pretty well but they do close delays. let's take a look at the westbound bay bridge. that's much better. westbound traffic looks good. again the visibility around the bay area today for this morning's commute has been much better than it was last week where we couldn't see a thick. look at all of that slow traffic. now we have a couple of crashes in redwood city. southbound, 1012 and monday 101 right in the area of marsh road. a good area to avoid. this would be a good day too use highway 208, the slow traffic there is not -- the slow traffic there is not worth it in my. let's go to rose mary. >>> just a little bit of haze out there. you can see plenty of blue sky. we'll-- we'll have hazy sunshine in store for today.
