ktvu's allie rasmus is here with more. >> reporter: one of the central questions to the investigation is figuring out who may have been at fault for this fatal collision. it happened saturday afternoon in front of a body of water known as raccoon straight. >> reporter: on saturday afternoon many people on it peninsula saw the after math of the collision before a golden gate ferry and a motor boat. >> it was crunched in the front. the windshield was broken and so the -- looked like the ferry boat came over the boat. >> the boat driver aand passenger were rushed to the doc -- and passenger were rushed to the dock. >> he was bleeding. >> reporter: the passenger of oregon died from his injuries about an hour after the collision. we spoke to his co-workers who explained he was a aphraser in the bay area to -- appraiser in the bay area. investigators interviewed the boat driver who is still in the hospital. they can't reveal what the driver said. >> if the results show that someone is at fault than they could be held accountable. >> looking for any information at all, witnesses, pictures, v

ktvu's allie rasmus joins us now and tells us the event netted a large return of weapons. >> reportertotal was more than 350 weapons recovered today. the police departments of palo alto, east palo alto and menlo park organized this gun buyback and the event was supposed to go on for four hours. but so many people showed up, the money ran out after just 2 hours and 40 minutes. the event was so popular, it created a traffic jam on  university avenue in east palo alto. as early as 10:00 a.m., people lined up to turn in their firearms. >> i don't use guns anyway. just trying to do a good deed. >> reporter: throughout the afternoon, officers hauled away arm loads of rifles. someone even inurned a grenade in a plastic bag. but there were no questions asked. gun owners got $100 in cash for every handgun, $200 for rifles, and $300 for each assault weapon. >> gun control advocates want to give me $100 for something that's collecting dust, that's fine with me. >> reporter: a nonprofit group provided the funds. >> protect your children, inc. has been extremely generous, giving us $50,000 today

ktvu's allie rasmus met with the coast guard and the spca today who issued their own warning about what to do if your pet gets caught in the water. >> reporter: throwing the ball into the breakers is a popular pats time. when susan takes her dog to ocean beach they avoid the surf. >> pacific is a deceiving team. it's not peaceful at all. >> reporter: since 2008 the coast guard says seven people have died on the northern california coast trying to rescue their dogs from the water. in november a family of three died after a 16-year-old boy and his parents jumped in to save their pet. the dog survived, the family did not. on new year's day this year a man died after a sneaker wave carried away his wife and dog. on sunday a woman walking her dog at shelter cove was swept away by the surf. >> what would you do? >> i would probably go after him. i just love him so much. >> reporter: floatation device, extra air and years of training, it takes all of that to make a human better able to survive in the surf than this little gal. >> the dogs have that nice long back and their head above water. th
