allie rasmus just arrived on the scene and joins us now with a live update. good afternoon, ail. >> reporter: there is an active scene. police have closed off this intersection with their crime scene tape. this is laguna and potomac in the diamond district neighborhood. right now you see about three officers and investigators in front of the home where this all happened. we just got an update from police officer john watson who says at 10:30 this morning, there was an 81-year-old woman living in this home. she says at 10:30 this morning someone forced his way into her home at some point there was some sort of altercation and the woman was shot by that suspect. she was struck in the upper arm according to a neighbor. she's listed in stable condition. she was taken to highland hospital. police would not tell us what exactly prompted the shooting. we don't know whether the homeowner caught the armed robber by surprise or what the circumstances were that led him to fire his handgun at her. we also don't know if the suspect and the homeowner knew one another. but
