allie rasmus is on her way. we have news chopper 2 above and bring you updates through this newscast. >>> some shocking new video that actually shows a man setting fires in san jose. for the first time here we're getting a detailed look at how he set at least one of the fires and what he did after this home started burning. this arsonist has been on the loose for a week now setting about a dozen fires in san jose. robert has been talking to investigators and got new videos. robert is live and we've been watching this video and probably the clearest pictures we've seen so far. >> reporter: it really is. they'll be a lot of interest for these people in the neighborhood. there have been videos of a person of interest. today a homeowner showed me incredibly compelling video of a person actually setting a home on fire and coming back again and again to make sure the house went up in flames. the actions of this man are unmistakable. he's setting a fire on the porch of a person's home with the family sleeping inside. i

ktvu's allie rasmus is on the scene. they learned that the fbi is there. >> a couple of fbi agents did come to the apartment complex. we spoke to them briefly and they said they came to ask to see if the investigators needed their assistance. they said they did not so the fbi agents went on their way. some investigators with alameda sheriff's office, b.a.r.t. police and dublin police as well. this is the park sierra apartment complex in dublin where this all happened around 2:00 this afternoon. the apartment where the officer was shot is in the back of the complex. so this is as close to the scene as we can get. the identity of the officer who died has not been revealed but we learned that he had more than 20 years of experience. and the b.a.r.t. officer that shot him had more than 10 years experience. to recap what happened at 2:00 this afternoon we're told that at least four b.a.r.t. police officers opened the apartment of a man on probation. that man was wanted for several robberies that had happened on b.a.r.t. prope

ktvu's allie rasmus live for us this morning in san jose where two more suspicious fires are now under investigation. allie. >> reporter: one of these suspicious fires is at the greater st. john baptist church in san jose on san antonio street and this is the building that burned. firefighters got the call about this around 4:00 this morning and you can see it's an exterior building, a portable trailer, looks like, and when we got some video earlier of firefighters clearing things out, it appears there were some books and other items store in this exterior building behind the church. this is the second time this serial arsonist started a fire at this location. the first time he struck here was on wednesday. in fact, the same building burned. fire investigators are also investigating at 2:00 this morning someone tried to start a fire next to a home on 24th and san antonio but that fire went out and didn't burn anything. so there's two suspicious fires investigators are checking out this morning. investigators say these two fires are definitely suspicious. they believe they are the work

allie rasmus just arrived on the scene and joins us now with a live update. good afternoon, ail. >> reporter: there is an active scene. police have closed off this intersection with their crime scene tape. this is laguna and potomac in the diamond district neighborhood. right now you see about three officers and investigators in front of the home where this all happened. we just got an update from police officer john watson who says at 10:30 this morning, there was an 81-year-old woman living in this home. she says at 10:30 this morning someone forced his way into her home at some point there was some sort of altercation and the woman was shot by that suspect. she was struck in the upper arm according to a neighbor. she's listed in stable condition. she was taken to highland hospital. police would not tell us what exactly prompted the shooting. we don't know whether the homeowner caught the armed robber by surprise or what the circumstances were that led him to fire his handgun at her. we also don't know if the suspect and the homeowner knew one another. but

ktvu's allie rasmus is live for us this morning on campus and tells us that there's a warning that has been sent out to students. >> reporter: university police on the san jose campus are investigating two incidents of sexual battery. both happened on the campus yesterday. the first incident happened around 7:00 near where we are, this is the campus' event and recreation center. police say a man riding his bicycle came up behind a female student and groped her. two hours later the man struck again, this time near the 8th 8th street and hoover hall dormitory area. another student walking in that area around 9:20 told police she was also touched inappropriately by a man on a bike who had been following her. now here is a description of the suspect. he's described as being 20 to 30 years old wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and black pants. he also has a mustache and of course was riding a bicycle. he was last seen on the bike heading towards the campusville village apartments around 9:30 last night. the two students were not injured in this incident, but they did report it to police and

allie rasmus is live at the scene of the latest fire, where an elderly couple escaped unharmed, thankscrews who have arrived and are in the process of boarding up this home. but this is also a crime scene. fire investigators will be here gathering evidence because they believe this fire was the work of a serial arsonist. this is video from a neighbor, showing flames shooting from the roof of this century-old victorian home on east st. john and north 17th in the downtown san jose area. the fire started sometime between 4:00 and 4:30 this morning. a couple in their seventies live in this home. they were inside at the time the fire started, but they escaped unharmed, thanks to their next door neighbors. we spoke to the father and soon who work next door, who noticed the flames outside their neighbor's home. they ran over to wake the elderly couple up. when we talked to the father this morning, he became a little emotional when he thought of what might have happened, had he not stepped in. >> i feel good, though, yeah. they are my neighbors. >> reporter: again, investigators believe this f

allie rasmus is live in the city of antioch.r some, is that right? >> reporter: it did. there are four to five homes on buchanan street that are still without power and will be for sometime this afternoon. first, let's show you how this crash happened. this is caused by a driver heading eastbound on buchanan street, just past san jose drive. you can see where he hit the median. some of the bushes are knocked down. then the car went into opposing lanes of traffic, hit this pg&e transformer the hazmat crews are now working to clean up. then the car continued. it slammed into the side of this house here and rolled into the home next door. you can take a closer look at some of the damage, see what's left of a garage door, a printer, even an old shoe in this pile of rubble. incredibly, no one was injured in this crash. the driver was able to walk away from it. but this is what the scene looked like shortly after it happened. again, it was just after midnight. there were people inside both homes, a total of five people who the car cra

allie rasmus is in half -- alex savage is in half-moon bay. >> reporter: the top you surfs are fired up. massive waves, light winds and of course it should be a nice bright sunny day out here. good day to watch the mavericks surf competition. we're here at the pillar point pier. it's getting more and more crowded. we have been watching as the competitors have been arriving and getting their gear and boarding some of the boats that will take them out on the water later today for the competition. organizers predicting 40-foot waves, possibly bigger than that when it's all said and done. these are some of the most talented surfers from all around the world that will take part in the mavericks competition that gets started an hour from now near half-moon bay. this is video we shot of mark heely, a surfer from hawaii's north ore, one of 24 competitors that will take to the water today, and there will be a lot of local talent in the water, too. about half of the surfers are from the bay area. competitors are excited about the perfect conditions expected today, but they also know this puts
