cnn's allison chinchar is with us in the cnn weather center.over 80 in terms of large active fires across the country and it spreads out over 13 different states. now, the good news at least for states like arizona and new mexico, we're hoping the rain in the forecast today can help firefighters contain some of those fires. the concern really is for the rest of the states, especially places like montana, idaho and even oregon where they are not expected to see the rain that some of their counterparts in the southwest are. overall to date the u.s. has had about 36,000 total u.s. wildfires, total area burned 2.7 million acres. we are ahead of pace from where we were last year and 2020 was an awful year for wildfires. one of the specific fires, the large fires that we've been saying close attention to is the bootleg fire in oregon now burning over 400,000 acres. they were able to make a little bit of improvement in the containment earlier this week. the hope is we can keep those winds down to allow those firefighters to continue making good jumps

meteorologist allison chinchar joins me now to talk more about this. what is the latest on this storm, and how bad will it likely be? >> rosemary, the next 12 hours are really going to be key especially across areas of cuba. this is where we anticipate it's going to make landfall likely late morning on monday. now current winds are 65 miles per hour gusting up to 75. and that forward movement to the northwest just about 15 miles per hour. we do have the hurricane warning, that red color you see here in southern cuba but also the yellows and blues not only for cuba but also for florida because that's where we anticipate the storm to go to next. it will encounter a bit of cooler temperatures there before making a likely second landfall somewhere around the tampa bay region late tuesday night or early wednesday morning. storm surge is going to be a concern all along southern a cuba. 2 to 4 feet potentially north of naples and up into the tampa bay region, but rainfall is also going to be a concern, and we have the potential for flash flooding for both flo

. >> allison chinchar is joining us live with more and an update on the situation.osystem of california or outwest period. but what's not really natural is just how bad the fire seasons have become out there. >> it's the prolonged nature of it. they can't seem to catch a break out here. we just don't get the systems in to bring some rain, to bring some relief to a lot of these areas. not just nature in general, but even the firefighters trying to fight these blazes. again, the bootleg fire alone in oregon, only 22% contained right now. over 270,000 acres burned. that's just one of 70 large active wildfires across the country. but look, a vast majority of those are west of the plains, where we've been dealing with incredible drought conditions. 95% of what is deemed the western u.s. is in some level of drought, whether it's moderate drought to severe drought. it doesn't matter. unfortunately, conditions today are not going to help. you've got dry thunderstorms, meaning the rain evaporates before it hits the surface, but you can still get the lightning, which can trig
