let's get to our meteorologist, allison chinchar with more on this. allison. good morning. >> and good morning, kasie. yeah. the video is coming in from yesterday last night, they're very, very impressive. again, you can see all of the heavy bands of rain just pushing all of that water, not only the water coming down, but the water coming in from the ocean. this is some of the storm surge here you can see that wind just pushing all of that water inland on the streets roadways, even parking lots. the system itself right now, dow down to sustained winds of 45 miles per hour, but the gusts are still up around 60. those rain bands are really starting to spread inland atlanta, birmingham, jackson, mississippi, all getting rain from some of those outer bands on the north side of this system. and it's not moving very quickly, so it's going to take all of that moisture in, spread it elsewhere. winds are starting to get a little bit calmer as we get towards the coast, but they're starting to go up the farther north you go. so we're starting to see more of those 30, 40

cnn meteorologist allison chinchar is tracking this for us. allison rain is welcome. the flooding not so much, right? >> exactly because some of these areas need to have some of the rain they're experiencing drought. you just don't want too much in a short period of time. so here's a look at where the remnants are. again, you can see still got those winds of 50 miles per hour. it's moving at ten miles per hour that may seem all that fast. it's faster than it was yesterday. it was only moving at three miles per hour. so now we're going to start to see so a lot of that rain spread eastward so far you can see a lot of these yellow, red, and orange areas where we're, they've had to four, even six inches of rain already fall. now, we're going to be adding more on top of it. and as we mentioned, a lot of these areas are dealing with some level of drought. the rain itself is welcome. you just don't want it to come to quickly because then that triggers a lot of the flooding concerns and the biggest one flooding concern lies along this narrow path right through here where you

allison we still have some lingering rain showers from what's left of helene now, the good news is here that the rain is much lighter in intensity than it has been the last few days. >> he's but we do still have some areas of showers. chances possible for tennessee, north carolina, virginia, kentucky, and even into ohio. now the heaviest rain as we go through the next couple of days is really going to be focused over virginia and west virginia. those areas could end up picking up upwards of two inches of rain total everywhere else you're looking at about a half an inch up to one inch. and while that may not sound like much, again, a lot of these communities don't need any even if it is on the low end, the best chance for flooding also exists in the same area where we saw those upwards of two inches of rain. so that's going to be focused across the virginia's. but we do also have the potential at least a marginal risk for flooding across portions of florida this is not what folks down there want to hear, especially as they continue with the cleanup and the recovery process there the good

chinchar is here now with more on this allison. >> that's right. good morning. yes. we've got a lot to talk about what we begin in the south east because we have not one, but two different cold fronts that are going to be adding some moisture into this area. also this low pressure system here sitting just outside the gulf, that's going to also provide an influx of moisture, especially along the gulf coast region and then even as we head into the next week, we have this, this system right here, this potential tropical system has been a 60% chance of development that too is also going to add a lot more moisture into the gulf coast over the next several days. so starting today, all the way through tuesday and wednesday of next week, we have the potential for flooding across much of the southeast right now, you've got some rain showers up around wilmington, a few showers south of atlanta, and then down towards the new orleans area. this is where some of the heaviest rain is located right there along the gulf coast. and that's really where the heaviest

let's get right to cnn meteorologist allison chinchar with the very latest. and this 8:00 am update, allison, what can you tell us yeah. >> so let's look at the new numbers. so yes. so the sustained winds are now 100 miles per hour? that is gusting to 115 forward movement still the same at 12 miles per hour, but that is also expected to increase as we go through the day today. and you mentioned one of the newer things we've had and issued is this tornado watch valid until 8:00 pm eastern time tonight? and that includes most of the big cities here, tampa, fort myers, miami, even orlando. and we're likely to see more of these areas added on to it because we've had tornado warnings, we've got several active right now in florida, but also one up a north and south or up in south carolina. so it's very likely believe we will see that tornado watch expand into portions of georgia and the carolinas as we go through the day and more of those outer bands begin to spread into some of these states. the storm is expected to strengthen even more reaching major hurricane st

thank sheriff get right to cnn meteorologist allison chinchar. let's get to allison chinchar to get a sense of where the storm is now in who can expect what else? >> right? that's right. and i want to emphasize here, john, this storm has made landfall, but this does not mean it's over. in fact, for some of these areas, portions of georgia and the carolinas, the worst is actually yet to come. you can see now the bulk of the storm starting to spread into the carolinas still has sustained winds of 70 miles per hour. and that's what's triggering a signal. mythical number of power outages here over 3 million people spread out from florida, georgia, and into the carolinas. all without power as of now. and it's not surprising when you look at some of these wind gusts, perry, florida, not far from where the storm made landfall 99 miles per hour. but here's an interesting point. douglas, georgia, more than 90 miles away from the coast just also had a 90 mile per hour wind gust. so that's why you're seeing these power outages even very far inland in some o

, allison and that's right. so it is a category two storm currently churning in the gulf of mexico in the last few frames here, we've really started to get it more of definitive eye develop in this particular storm that shows that it is continuing to strengthen and we anticipate that this storm will continue to strengthen as we go through the rest of the day today, we now have not one but two separate tornado watches one in effect for about two-thirds of florida, the other for portions of georgia and south carolina, more of these are likely to come as we go through the next 24 to 48 hours, we've had several tornado warnings off and on for both florida and georgia, as well as south carolina. >> more of those are expected as more of those outer bands begin to creep into to the states the storm is expected to become a major hurricane later on today before making landfall tonight near the big bend region, that that point, the forward speed we'll pick up quite considerably. and what that really means is it means it c

let's get straight to our meteorologist allison chinchar with the latest allison, what are we lookings. >> so we just got the latest update at the top of the hour and we're continuing to see helene strengthen those winds now up to 65 miles per hour. they had been 60. it's expected to continue to strengthen as we go through the day today. likely getting up to hurricane strength at some point in the next few hours. now the system here you can notice is just ever so slightly off to the east of cancun, mexico. it's going to continue to make its way up into the very warm waters of the gulf of mexico. that's why we anticipate further strengthening at its fuel for these types of systems before continuing its trek up towards the florida panther handle likely still making landfall sometime thursday evening and then continuing to spread inland up into states like georgia and tennessee. as we finish out the rest of the week. so lots of states expected to be impacted here in the short term, a lot of these areas along the coast are really going to see those storm surge numbers begin to tick up as

let's go now to allison chinchar with more heat concerns out west. it's not just the temperatures, but obviously the threat of these fires. >> yeah, that's right. so yes, we take a look at where the heat is because we've got this section down here across portions of southern california, also areas of arizona looking at some of those heat advisories we're talking at least 25 million people under these heat alerts. now we started to see that reprieve from the heat in the pacific northwest, those areas of northwestern tier of the country yesterday, we will finally start to see that break in the heat for the rest of the west. but it's going to take a little bit more time. take, for example, sacramento, san jose in los angeles. look at how the temperature for drops as we get down to tuesday of this week. so it is coming. we just have a few more days to go places like las vegas and palm springs. it will hold off until wednesday before we see those temperatures coming back down. the other concern, yes, these are red flag warnings in effect for areas of cali

chinchar is here with us now. >> allison, where is the storm now? >> right. so what's left of it really is just kind of sitting over portions of alabama, mississippi, and tennessee, but also notice we've got a lot of rain starting to creep into the coastal carolinas that's coming from an entirely separate system. now, both of these have the potential for flooding because both of them are moving incredibly slowly. so you've got flood watches in effect over here. you've also got a lot of flood watches right there along the coastal regions. but again, they are from two entirely separate systems. now another concern, especially along the coast is as that secondary system begins to edge closer, we're also looking at very high surf and the potential for rip currents pretty much up and down much of the southeastern coast here it goes all the way as far north as portions of virginia. so again, just to kind of show you the scope of this next storm so here's a look at that again, it's still offshore for now, but once we get into monday, we really start to see
