let's go to meteorologist allison chinchar.t's been a while since some of these cities saw significant snowfall like this. >> it is. and it's a wide-reaching storm when you consider that these winter weather alerts stretch from northern georgia up into maine. not everyone is going to see the same type of precipitation. that's important, too, because some folks will get entirely snow. others it's going to be a mix of rain, ice and snow. the southern portion of this, it's really going to be all rain, heavy at times and some thunderstorms mixing in. but once you start creeping into the southern appalachians, we're starting to see the mixing taking place. right now you've got freezing rain from asheville all the way up to roanoke, you've got snow coming down now across cincinnati and columbus. this system is going to continue to shift to the north and east and that low pressure system will be over the focus of the mid tack by midafternoon and evening tonight. especially by sunday morning the focus becomes the northeast. even by lat

meteorologist the allison chinchar joins us with all of it. has played a big role in my life in the last few days tell us how it's going to be affecting all of us in the next week. >> there's just a little bit of something for everybody. we're pretty much missing the kitchenen sink. we start with the arctic air. it's still not gone. you're feeling that focus across the northern plains, but that very cold air over the great lakes is what's triggering that additional lake-effect snow. that will continue today and tomorrow and into friday. we're keeping an eye on that system out to the west. that's going to be the next big storm that makes its way across the country. these are the windchill alerts. the dichs will be the next 24 hours. this is what we will look like tomorrow morning. so a lot of those windchill alerts are going to fade away in the next 24 hours. but then fast forward the next day, we're very likely to get them back. we have another blast of cold air that will be coming in by the end of the week . 14 in atlanta. still positive numb

meteorologist allison chinchar join us. fw >> a lot of snow and cold. air is sitting in place across the central u.s. we have this cold front sliding through. that's bringing rain, snow, and a wintery mix. it's because of these temperatures. we have snow in places you wouldn't normally see it. only because these temperatures are so cold across much of the country. 20% of the lower 48 population looking at temperatures below zero. 80% of that population looking at temperatures below freezing. for some, it's still going to linger for several more days. yes, it's snowing in new york. that headed through boston and providence. rain on the southern side. even a little bit of an icy mix for some states. that's why you have thesed a provides ris that run from louisiana up through maine. when we zoom in closer, you can see the snow coming down. hartford, boston, even areas of upstate new york and pennsylvania looking at pretty heavy snow at this time. now this system is going to continue to make its way off to the northeast and then out to sea. once we get late

. >>> let's check in now with cnn meteorologist allison chinchar.his cold weather is coming down more than iowa. show us around. who is also getting it this week? >> the easier question, victor, who is not going to get some type of cold weather for the next couple days. right now we're still focussed on a lot of the snow still on going across the midwest and the northeastern portion of the country. places like chicago, michigan, heavy rain across boston and providence, rhode island. this isn't the only area looking a at that snow as we widen this out, you'll see we also have some snow showers beginning across portion of kansas, nebraska and denver. the airport reporting snow right now because you have multiple systems across the u.s. that's why you have such a wide swath here of so many winter weather alerts. but it's not just for snow and ice. it's also the incredible cold air that's going to be sliding in behind some of these systems. look at all of these areas. you're talking overle 80 million people under some type of wind chill alert. some of t

cnn meteorologist allison chinchar joining us now. so the storm is still impacting millions of people, what can we expect and there is another one coming in right behind it. >> that's right. yeah, the main impact for today is just more snow. this system isn't done yet. for some of these areas they have had plenty, unionville, new york, has already picked up a foot of snow and we've got more on the way, heavy snow coming down across syracuse, also in boston right now, places like portland and manchester also getting some snow. but this system is largely going to exit out a little bit farther offshore over the rest of the day today. we will see this system ending today. still expecting 3 to 5 inches widespread, some areas could pick up 8 to 10 additional inches of snow today but then, yes, we have another system behind t this is going to be the big one impacting the central u.s. over the next few days. it's beginning in the southwest and then it's going to very quickly make its way across the country, really traversing 1,800 miles in ju

meteorologist allison chinchar is tracking the arctic chill from the cnn weather center.uper cold here in atlanta, although it's only in the 30s. >> it's subjective, though, because it's what you're used to. even though it may not be as cold as in montana or north dakota, it's what you're prepared for. yes, this is going to be widespread when we talk about the cold. it will have impacts to the caucuses on monday in iowa, but also all of these other places. you've got windchill alerts stretching from washington state over to ohio all the way down into areas of texas as well as louisiana. some of those windchills in the far northern region likely to get down to as low as 60 or even 70 degrees below zero. we are only at -- only at minus 50 right now in north dakota, bismarck looking at minus 45. it feels like it's about 40 degrees below zero in des moines as we speak. when you factor in that temperature and windchill. monday is not going to be much better. when you look at previous caucuses, look at the forecast for when we go into monday, it will be way colder than any prev

cnn meteorologist allison chinchar is here now. tell us more about the storm and where it's headed.here's another one coming right behind it? >> that's right. this one is not over yet. we have snow across syracuse, albany, binghamton, new york as well. boston and portland also getting some snow. this is going to be the case for the rest of the day until the low pressure system exits entirely well out into the atlantic. really off and on through out the day today, we can expect widespread an extra 3-5 inches. some areas 8-10 inches before the system pushes out. we have more winter weather alerts in a different part of the country. that's farther out to the west. even blizzard warnings popping up across portions of colorado and new mexico. that's in anticipation of not the snow that's set to arrive, but also very strong winds. that's going to make very poor visibility over the next few days. the system right now is in the southwest. it's going to gradually push eastward over the next 24 hours and start to take off. this system is expected to move 1800 mileses. you have very heavy rain

lths get to meteorologist allison chinchar who has all of this for us. we have been getting a lot of it here in washington, d.c., but this is really across the east coast. >> it's been a very busy last 24 hours. that's for sure. take a look at the severe reports we had just in the last 48 hours. the total of more than 20 tornado reports nearly 300 wind reports and roughly a dozen hail reports. you can see scattered along not only the gulf coast, but the sea board, across the southeast and mid-atlantic. it's not just some of those reports, but the winds has led to a lot of power out ages. georgia at 93 miles per hour. even areas of florida, south carolina, topping out at more than 60 and 70-mile-per-hour winds gusts. we talked about the consequence of that is a lot of power outages. a lot of different states here are looking at nearly two-thirds of a million people looking at without power. and that could end up spreading. the reason for that is because we still have a lot of wind alerts out. several wind warnings at that system continues to exit. it's go

meteorologist allison chinchar has been tracking all of it.uses set to be the coldest in iowa history, the day's high just 2 degrees fahrenheit? >> yeah, it's by a long shot. that record was not even close when you compare to previous caucuses. but iowa is not alone, take a look at how many people are under these windchill alerts, they stretch from the north dakota, canada border all the way down to south texas right up against the mexico border. you have a lot of folks dealing with extremely cold temperatures and it's going to last through the day today and for some even for a few more days. right now in biz mark it feels like it is 39 degrees below normal when you factor in that windchill. minneapolis the temperature is 8 below, the feels like is 23 below, but des moines you are talking the feels like temperature in the moment is 31 degrees below zero. again, tonight in des moines it's not much better, the feels like temperature will be 32 degrees below zero when folks are heading out for the caucuses. it's around the state, waterloo, cedar

meteorologist allison chinchar joins us now. it is balmy compared to that here in new york, but a beautiful snowy morning i woke up to. >> that's right. i will say as far as the temperatures are concerned, we will get a brief reprieve. the emphasis is on brief from those temperatures. now, we can take a look again, you still got that arctic air surging across the central portion of the u.s. we've also got that cold front that is bringing areas of snow to the mid-atlantic and the northeast. as far as the temperatures are concerned, we start to see it retreat on wednesday. tomorrow a lot of folks really starting to see those temperatures get a little bit warmer. it's going to be brief. by the time we get back to the weekend another round of arctic air begins to spread into everyone for the eastern half of the country. enjoy that brief reprieve tomorrow. in the short-term, however, we're still focused on all of the snow that's falling across portions of the mid-atlantic and the northeast. you still have winter weather alerts stretc

our meteorologist allison chinchar has been tracking all of it for us. what do you expect?d temperatures are arriving into the weekend. the focus is really over the high plains. but that cold air is really going to start to spread south and east in the coming days. so this brief reprieve we're getting today, enjoy it while it lasts. take atlanta looking at a high in the 50s. probably not that same as we head into the the weekend. taking a look at this. louisville with a high of 36 today. back down to a high of only 22 on saturday. same thing for d.c. going almost 40 for their high temperature today. back down to the mid-20s by saturday. as that cold air begins to spread farther south and east. you have some patches of snow in some areas including this area in the midwest. still dealing with a the lo of moisture in portions of washington state as well as oregon today. the good news is not nearly as as the last few days. the one system is going to spread into the midatlantic and northeast as we head through the day today and into tomorrow. so be prepared that you may have mor

meteorologist allison chinchar is tracking this chill from the cnn weather center.ell us more. >> right, so i think the key thing is how many people are affected by this. take a look at this happen. these with windchill alerts stretching down to mexico. again to varying degrees because the criteria for each varies. so for folks in north dakota, we're looking at windchills as low as 70 below zero. and across texas, that is closer to 10 to 15 degrees above zero. but even still, very cold and dangerously cold, especially across the northern and central portion of the country. these are current temperatures and windchills. in bismarck, the actual temperature is 21 degrees below zero but that feels-like temperature, 47 below zero. not much betner minneapolis. that feels-like is 26 below zero and des moines, a windchill of minus 41 at the moment. and it is not expected to get that warmer as we go into tomorrow and for a lot of folks heading out to the caucus, this is going to be absolutely the coldest set of caucuses in history. you could take a look at all of the previou

. >> and a allison chinchar has the weekend weather forecast.a e weekend weather forecast. >> germany and france will finally see some relief in the form of drier conditions. an and it couldn't come soon enough. roadway, fields were under water and it has been that way for a few days now. the next system starting to shift from northern europe down in towards the mediterranean. so focus of the rainfall the next few days will be across portions of italy, deggreece an adriatic sea. and you can see across the alps, about 20 to 40 centimeters. but heavier rain is focused along italy and greece, 50 to 100 millimeters total. and the other big story has been the extreme cold temperatures. take a look at some of these numbers. all of these locations are in the arctic air circle, but this extremely cold. all bottoming out below minus 40 degrees even places farther south like oslo and helsinki, much colder than they normally would be. the good news is we will finally start to see the frigid air begin to shift off to the east and get some relief, but it is very slow to do so. so for a lot of the

more on that and how this earthquake unfolded from allison chinchar. >> the initial 7.5 magnitude quaketernoon local time on new year's day in the ishikawa prefecture. you can see here by this indicated dot just off to the northwest side there. and then the subsequent tsunami waves began to take place. you can see the water here in the background breaking over the wall that is there right along this sea. one of the things that we noticed with this particular area is when you zoom down across the suzu city location, you will notice that the water area here, but also this little inlet cove that sits here. think of it like this. when you have the tsunami take place, it is almost like dropping a rock or stone into a bathtub. you get the first set of waves that begin to ripple back out but then hit the edge and come right back in. so you will have the ongoing back and forth because once it hits the coastline, those waves will continue to ebb and flow throughout the next coming hours. for many of these areas, we saw peak observed waves up around the 1 meter in numerous locations, one even top
