allison chinchar: and hurricanes are not exclusive to the planet earth. jupiter actually has a hurricane, which has been going on for over 300 years. it can be seen as the red spot on the planet. an average hurricane season in the atlantic ocean produces a total of 14 named storms. eric jay dolin: centuries ago, they just called hurricanes after the year that they hit or the location they hit. like, there was the 1900 hurricane in galveston, which is the deadliest natural disaster in american history. it killed as many as 10,000 people. but then there was the change. in 1979, the world meteorological organization had hurricanes named after men and women in an alternating basis. michael brennan: when a storm has done enough damage or caused enough fatalities that could be traumatic for the area being affected, the name needs to be retired. storms going back to andrew or hugo or katrina. derek van dam: when hurricane katrina came ashore in florida, it was a relatively minor storm. all of that changed in the blink of an eye. michael brennan: every 20 or 30 y

let's get to our meteorologist, allison chinchar with more on this. allison. good morning. >> and good morning. and you said thursday, i think that's the key point. it's going to sit here for at least another day before it finally makes that second landfall, which means it's got a lot of time to dump even more rainfall on a lot of these areas that have seen plenty enough. its tropical storm debby still has sustained winds of 45 miles per hour. that is actually up from the overnight because now that its backup over open water, it's able to intensify a little bit more, very early into thursday, we anticipate that to make a second landfall before finally getting picked up through that front and sliding up into the northeast in the short term, still the potential for some extra flooding across portions of the carolinas, not only today, but also tomorrow. we see it shift little bit farther inland as the storm itself begins to move inland as well. but adding more rain as the last thing we need, take a look at this video from hilton head, south carolina. we can see t

let's get straight to our meteorologist, allison chinchar with the latest allison.g and good morning to you. >> yes. this video from yesterday, near the pender samson counties align, you can see that tornado in the distance back there. again, this was one of perhaps a couple of tornadoes yesterday, not just in north carolina, but spread out over the country and we still have a tornado nato watch for today. this valid until 1:00 p.m. eastern time today again, encompassing portions of north carolina, as well as virginia. we do still have some active tornado warnings. they've been off and on throughout much of the morning. that's likely going to continue throughout the day. and it's not just tornadoes, but also the flooding component of this. you can see a lot of that really heavy rain spreading now when does cities like raleigh as well as charlotte, north carolina and look at all of these red shaded areas. those are flash flood warnings taking place in this one with a white outline that is a flash flood emergency. they've had already up to eight inches of rainfall in

let's get to meteorologist allison chinchar with more on this. allison.ood morning. >> thank good morning. kasie. you get lots of talk about here now for some folks, we've finally going to start to see a reprieve from that heat for others, you've still got one more day before we start to see those temperatures break and you can see that here basically anywhere you see this orange color were still going to have at least one more day, possibly two before those temperatures start to come back down, look at some of the numbers from yesterday he those st. louis topping out at 100 to chicago, o'hare and both midway airports, 99 degrees, even portions of ohio getting into those upper 90s. now the difference between yesterday and today, you're going to see that drop chicago again, going from 99 down to only at four today, much more tolerable cleveland going from 95 yesterday down to 83. now, the northeast it's a little bit of a different story. you're going to have to wait till tomorrow before we start to see those temperatures drop. so still expected to be 99 to

i want to bring in cnn meteorologist allison chinchar. so allison, interesting we heard from him, things seemed relatively calm right now. maybe you can, you can tell us, i mean, is the eye over bermuda, is that why it seems calm at least from his vantage? which point the center of the storm? >> yes. is directly over the island right now because you can even see from this map the location zero miles north of bermuda. it is literally centered right over the island. and yes, you've got some areas on the western side where you've still got some of those really heavy winds are really heavy rain and some gusty winds. but areas on the he side or even the north side of the island likely getting at least a little bit of a break at the moment, but it will return right back again as more of those wraparound showers come back and we've already had some significant wind gusts. >> the airport reporting an 84 mile per hour wind gusts. that's about 135 kilometers per hour. and also some pretty significant rainfall already we've had 165 millimeters. that'

allison chinchar joining us now with more on what we can expect allison. yeah, we can expect a lot of rain, a lot. >> i cannot even emphasize to you the historic levels of rainfall we could be dealing with here let's take a look. tropical storm debby right now, sustained winds of 50 miles per hour, that is up from the overnight timeline. it's still going to continue to move through very pretty warm waters. that's why the national hurricane center is saying this is going to continue to intensify and pretty quickly as it moves through this area, it is expected to get to hurricane strength before it finally makes landfall early monday, we're already starting to see some of those outer bands begin to slide across portions of florida. and that's going to continue throughout the day then becoming more widespread and more frequent in the rain, also getting heavier, storm surge is going to be a big concern. you've got a lot of these areas down through here, even tampa, fort myers, naples, looking at two to four feet of storm surge, two to four feet along coastal g

now to cnn meteorologist allison chinchar, how was honed impacting hawaii? now right? >> so we're starting to see it get awfully close to it. you can see it there just to the south and east. but the key component here is look how there's not really anything else. i mean, hawaii is really the only target. we'll see when we talk about hurricanes in the atlantic, regardless of where it forms, there's a bunch of caribbean islands. there's a bunch of stuff where we can get real-time ground observations here, not so much you've got hawaii and that's it for these particular storms in the central pacific missions, like the hurricane hunters use become even more crucial because it's the only way we can really get data yes. so when those hurricane hunter planes go out, they dropped hundreds of these vectors. this is called a drops on inside their sensors. it can measure moisture wind speed, wind direction, the parachute that's on the inside. this will come out to help it stabilize as it falls down through the storm. this is how we collect the real-time a really good data that we

cnn's allison chinchar is in the cnn weather center with more and debby's track. o allison, how much rain can we expect here right, omar, that really is the question because for a lot of these areas, they feel like they have seen plenty of rain. >> they don't need any more, but sadly, because of how slow the forward speed is for debby, they're still going to be quite a bit of rain that we continue to see not just today, but really for the next several days you've also got that tornado watch an effect right here. you can see a tornado warning. those are going to continue this afternoon as well. storm surge because of that spin from the storm, it's going to continue to push a lot of that ocean water inland. so for a lot of these areas, including myrtle beach down through charleston and savannah, still looking at about two to four feet of storm surge, then the system ever so slowly is going to finally start to move its way off towards the north so it's going to. come back inland and then begin to head up towards the northeast as it does, it is expected to weaken. but

debby today could reach hurricane status by tomorrow, meteorologist allison chinchar tracking the latest from the cnn weather center. allison gonna be a bad one. >> it could be, especially in terms of the flooding component. now the wind component not going to be quite as serious and widespread flooding is really going to be the main concern with this system right now, just on the southern side of cuba, sustained winds of 30 miles per hour. the concern is, where does it go from there? and in terms of this particular storm, if we put that into play, you'll notice did it will eventually start to head its way up towards florida. you can see we've already got a lot of the tropical storm warnings and yes, even this pink area here is a hurricane watch because the national hurricane center saying it's going to get about two, about 70, 75 miles per hour right there on that verge of category one strength, very, very early monday morning. now from there it's then expected to come i'm back out over open water on the atlantic side and really skirt along much of the carolina coast, bringing them some

cnn's allison chinchar is here with us now. i mean, that's a strong storm if it's impacting basically the entire east coast. >> yeah. and it's because of the sheer size and you lose perspective because bermuda itself is so small but the size of this storm is very big. >> and what that means is it's taking all of that water and pushing it towards the u.s. coast, even from hundreds of miles away. now, right now, hurricane ernesto sustained winds of 85 miles per hour, gusting up to 105. so it is still a category one storm. here's the thing though, that storm is actually going to weaken a little bit more before rebounding and then strengthening back up again as it moves out. over open water. but so far the airport location in bermuda has picked up a wind gust of 84 miles per hour. rainfall already 6.5 inches. the forecast called for six to nine. they are likely going to end on the high end of that particular range here, here's a look at the storm as it continues to go forward, we'll get down to about 80, then backup to nine-day ver

declared a state of emergency because of strong winds, heavy rain fire concerns cnn meteorologist allison chinchar storm for us with the latest right? so it is now a hurricane. it became a hurricane at the 5:00 a.m. eastern time update this morning, 75 miles per hour. you can see those outer bands just lashing portions of the big island of hawaii right now, that's why you've got those watches and warnings in place. it is expected to continue westward moving eventually the away from hawaii and then starting to weaken as we go through the next 24 to 48 hours. but in the short term, you're talking a tremendous amount of rain that's already starting to hit the eastern slopes of the island and eventually that rain is going to spread, starting to see some of those extreme outer bands even begin to reach maui as we speak. so flooding is going to be a huge concern. you've got a flash flood warning and new ones there for butch of the big island and the flood. watch your talking six to

. >> cnn meteorologist allison chinchar is tracking these rainfall totals how much are we talking hereht. >> so some of these areas have already had a foot of rain. now we're still going to add another six to ten inches on top of that. here's where the storm is currently located. the center of that storm just moving offshore right now, that concern there is as it moves back out out over open water is whether or not it's going to re-intensify a but you also still have a tornado watch valid until 5:00 p.m. eastern time tonight, but rain had really been the story. these are total so far. lakewood ranch, florida picking up just under 18 inches, several spots in south carolina, picking up roughly a foot. and again, as we mentioned, there's more rain on the way in addition to that flooding concerns also from storm surge, you can see all of this yellow area here, including myrtle beach, charleston, and savannah still looking at two to four feet of storm surge, then the storm while it's going to meander out over open water will then come back and make a second landfall before finally starting

meteorologist allison chinchar is here now to break down the data right? think of how we think of only temperature, but a lot more goes into it and that's not just for the olympics, it's for sports in general. if you go to high schools in colleges across the country, there's a different tool that's used. it's this, it's called a wet bulb globe i'm thermometer. it measures temperature and humidity, wind speed, sun angle, cloud cover. it does pretty much everything. that's important because it allows like athletic trainers to determine how how, when or not these kids need extra water breaks do they need to be put in the shade or do they need to cancel practice altogether? the olympic committee is saying that due to this threshold, some of these cities saved by 2050 are going to be beyond that threshold where they will no longer be able to keep track of that. so take a look at some of these graphics we've got for you because this is going to kind of, i think explained it a little bit easier for you. so here you can see some of those cities right there. now, w
