cnn's allison chinchar is tracking it all from the weather center. hi, allison.hat do we need to know? and good morning. >> yes, i think the key component here is that how many places will be affected. you're talking more than a dozen states likely to see impacts from this system. this is a look at cleveland. now. sunrise should be happening just a few moments from now. but we've got a snow squall moving through so you can see that visibility is very limited. you can see even a few whitecaps right there on lake erie. now this is not from the main system. this is actually still from lake effect snow that is continuing across portions of the great lakes region. but the next system that's going to be coming into play, that's the one we're really concerned about, and it's going to present a huge swath of concerns over the next 48 to 72 hours. you're talking very difficult travel in some of these areas and likely some widespread power outages, especially in the orange, red and even the purple color there, indicating that extreme potential there. now, when we talk abou

let's go to cnn meteorologist allison chinchar allison chinchar to see what you're seeing with the datahere. alison. a lot of people watching these these winds with bated breath. >> that's right. yes. and the good news is we have seen those winds calm down in the last 24 hours. and they've been able to make some vast improvements in those containment numbers. but we would like a little bit more time. the unfortunate part is it's not likely to happen. you've got the red flag warnings and the fire weather watch in effect for several portions of southern california, in anticipation that these winds are going to start to creep back up. we're expecting them to be about 20 to 30mph sustained, gusting upwards of 50mph here as we go through the next 24 hours. right now, these are current winds. you can see we've got some spots that are calm three miles per hour, six, eight. those are still tolerable numbers, but in the coming hours we are going to see those start to jump. so you look at the forecast by this afternoon and into the evening hours local time, you can see they start jumping into the

meteorologist allison chinchar is back with us. so talk about these winds when we expect them to pick up and how strong they might be. >> all right. i think like you guys mentioned, it's the two twofold component. it's not that they're picking up, but it's also the fact that they're changing direction. so all of those plans the firefighters had in place, they've now got to switch gears because the wind direction has shifted. and so we take a look at what we're dealing with both today and also tomorrow. notice both days we have both the elevated and critical fire threat, not just for los angeles, but a lot of the areas surrounding it as well. the firefighters have been able to make vast improvements in these containment numbers. in fact, the latest number we have for the lidia fire that is now finally at 100% containment. the other fires also increasing eaton fire gone from 3% to 15%, kenneth fire having gone from 50% to 80%. so they are making improvements thanks to the lower wind speeds. but that will change by tonight. we're goin

. >> meteorologist allison chinchar is standing by with the forecast. but first, let us go to our stephanie elam, who is in malibu, california. for us, another place that you have gone to to see unimaginable devastation, what can you tell us is the latest to try to contain some of these fires and what you're seeing there? yeah. sara, i want to move out of the shot just so i can show you. i'm standing in front of what used to be an inn here in malibu, right along the pacific coast highway. and you can see it's just completely decimated. there's a staircase to nowhere. now, here, when you look at this over the hillside of where the palestine fire has burned down, this is just one tiny part of the massive, widespread destruction that we have seen here in this area. over the weekend, we saw crews battling from the sky to bring down the flames along the mandeville canyon, where they pre-positioned some firefighters to battle it through the weekend. and i can already tell you now that the winds are picking up, the winds are strong right now. it is cold out he

let's get to our meteorologist, allison chinchar. allison. good morning. i know earlier in the week, we were talking about some hope that by friday, which is today, some of this might subside. what are firefighters going to face from the weather today? right. so there is some good news. we are going to start to see those winds begin to come back down. >> but it's going to be temporary because they are expected to come back up again on sunday. you look at scenes like this behind me. this is an after of what malibu looked like. so here's the pacific ocean down here. this is the roadway right through here. now let's flip to what it used to look like prior to the fire. you can see homes lining right there along the coast. you've also got a couple of structures and buildings on the other side of the road. now back again to the after again. you can see almost every single one of those structures is now gone. and again, that's what we've been seeing, not just in malibu but in a lot of the surrounding counties. now, for today. we do still have some area in the cri

allison chinchar for us this morning. allison, thanks very much for that. so when most people were running from the flames in los angeles, some people ran toward the fires. one of them was the actress ashley scott. she and her friend helped friends in topanga county retrieve medicine from their homes and hosed down their properties ahead of the flames, and they stood side by side with firefighters. and ashley scott joins us now from los angeles. ashley, good morning. i'm so grateful to have you with us. tell us a little bit about what you've been experiencing. >> well, thank you for having us. this is my husband, forrest. i'm more than just a friend. >> very nice to have you as well. >> yeah. we, um, at this point in, in this journey, we are exhausted. i think all of our firefighters are exhausted. um, we. evacuated, uh, to another part of the canyon and got us out of danger's way with his mom, who has dementia. on tuesday evening, up and we got to, we were able to kind of have a bird's eye view of of the canyon. and the winds were out of control. as you al

let's get to our meteorologist, allison chinchar, with more on this. allison, good morning. >> and good morning. >> yes, the fire that you can see behind me from this highway off in the distance here. this is the one that is just northwest of downtown los angeles near sherman oaks, california. again, as you mentioned, we have several fires that we are keeping an eye on right now, five in total, and they range various portions of southern california some a little bit with higher containment than others. the red flag warning is in effect not just for today, but this continues into early friday morning. some of these gusts up around 55 to 65mph on the northern side and a little bit farther south, could gust as high as 70mph. now, again, the concern here is just how dry it has been in this area. 260 consecutive days, with less than a 10th of an inch of rain. it's the longest stretch they've had in los angeles on record. now there is a bit of good news, and that is, there is finally a chance of some rain in the forecast that would begin this weekend and cont

allison chinchar. thank you. take you back to israel now and bianna golodryga is live outside the hospital where the four former israeli hostages are landing now. bianna, what's the latest? >> yeah, i'm actually not at the hospital, but we are getting images now of the helicopters making their way to beilinson hospital. as we reported last week, there were one of six hospitals that these four hostages would be taken to that had been prepared to take these hostages in. depending on each case by case status, in terms of their health. beilinson is where all four of these female hostages will be admitted, and as we see, one helicopter has already landed. we are waiting for two helicopters to transport these four hostages into what will be a cordoned off private wing where these hostages, along with their families, will have their own rooms, their own privacy and be spending, at least according to the department of health here in israel, they're recommending at least four days of a hospital stay to be evaluated throug

in the meantime, i want to go to meteorologist allison chinchar, who's joining us live from the cnn weathercenter. and allison, as as bill and erin were talking about weather plays such a role in the firefighters abilities to get ahead of these fires and try to fight, fight them back and make sure that they're that these embers aren't spreading. how are things shaping up? what are these winds looking like? yeah. >> so we are starting to see those winds begin to pick back up. and we have for about the last hour or so you look at this wind map. this is current winds. and we've got a couple still left on here with those single digit numbers. but more and more of them are starting to creep into the teens in the 20s. and that's going to be the trend over the next 24 hours to see them continue to go up. and not just for today, but also monday. you'll notice both of these days have both the elevated and critical fire threat, not just in l.a., but even some of the surrounding areas as well. and that's in anticipation of these winds continuing to rise as we go through the evening, and especially mon

. >> cnn meteorologist allison chinchar is tracking conditions. allison, what can we expect over the next few hours? >> right. so we are going to finally start to see these winds beginning to come back down. but it takes time. and you have to understand too, where they're coming from. look at some of these peak wind gusts that we know of 80, 90, even 100mph. so even if you cut those numbers in half, you're still looking at 40 to 50 mile per hour wind gusts. that is plenty to be able to continue to spread the fires and keep the keep the firefighters from really being able to make advancements in the containment because they have not one, but four separate fires. you've got the eaton fire hurst, woodley and also palisades. now, for those who are not familiar with this area, we've put some landmark spots on here so you can kind of understand the area. so here's where the hollywood sign is. dodger stadium a little bit down here, the rose bowl stadium. just to kind of put that in perspective. now the palisades fire specifically, we've been able to kind

we want to get an update now from the cnn weather center with meteorologist allison chinchar, who's tracking conditions. allison, what can we expect in the coming hours? >> all right, so the good news is we will start to see some of these winds come down in the coming hours. but you have to look at what they've been. look at some of these wind speed gusts that have been measured so far, 80, 90, even 100mph. so keep in mind, even if we cut these numbers, say, in half, by the time we get to the evening hours, you're still talking 40 to 50 mile per hour gusts. that is plenty to continue moving these fires along. and it's not just one fire, it's four. you've got the eaton, the hurst, the woodley and the palisades. now, for people who are not familiar with this area, we've put some points on here that maybe you would understand where they are. say, for example, the hollywood sign, dodger stadium, the rose bowl stadium. to kind of put this in perspective. now, the palisades fire specifically, again, having some of those areas that zoomed down where you could see where that fire was, one of the con

let's get right to meteorologist allison chinchar for a look at the forecast and the winds. allison. >> yeah, right. >> i think that's kind of the point is we don't just have the three fires that we had yesterday. we now have a brand new fire on top of it, and all four of them are going to face these dangerous winds. that's why you have this red flag warning in effect, that takes into account not just the very strong winds that could be gusting 60 to 70mph, but also the very dry conditions that are out there. and then embedded within this red flag. warning, you have two particular areas. these darker shaded ones here. those are considered particularly dangerous situations. and you have to note that three of the four fires are located within one of those pds, as well as communities like oxnard, ventura, thousand oaks, san fernando. so again, this is going to be a big concern going through the day today and into tomorrow. we talked about the new additional fire. here's the three that we had yesterday. now we also have the auto fire to add into the mix which is over towards the

cnn meteorologist allison chinchar joining me right now. so, allison, what kind of temperatures wind chill are we expecting for d.c. this monday? >> that's right. okay, so not quite as bad as ronald reagan's second term, but we are going to get awfully close, especially when you look at some of those wind chill numbers. >> take a look at this in the morning leading up to the festivities. those temperatures are just going to be in the low 20s. factor in that wind, which is going to be gusting about 10 to 20mph. it's going to make that wind chill feel like single digits to maybe at the warmest mid teens. so again, very, very cold. the high temperature that day only expected to get to 25. so this is for the obvious reason of why they have moved things inside. it's not just as simple as putting on a pair of gloves or a scarf. it's a little bit more dangerous than that. now all of that cold air is coming behind this cold front here. so once that cold front begins to push out, all of that arctic air will begin to surge back into these areas, not j

but on that note, let's talk now with cnn meteorologist allison chinchar, who's going to join us to talkmore about those winds. you heard him there, allison. they need a break. will they get one? >> not in the near future, unfortunately, no, because now we're already starting to see those winds picking back up here in just about the last hour or two. and they're only going to go up from here. here's a look at the current winds. again, we're lucky we've still got at least a couple spots on the map with some single digit numbers, but more and more of them are getting up into the teens and even into the 20s. and those numbers are going to continue to go up through the evening tonight, as well as monday and tuesday of this week. you've got the critical and elevated fire risk, not only for the remainder of the day today, but also into monday. and again, notice it's not just los angeles. it's a lot of the surrounding areas too. when we look at these numbers, this is fast forwarding to overnight. tonight you'll start to see those numbers really begin to rise. those 30, 40, 50 mile per hour wind

desperately needed, but too much, too soon could do more harm than good, cnn's meteorologist allison chinchar is tracking this one for us. and, allison, what are you seeing in the forecast here? >> all right, so we are seeing rain, which in theory should be a great thing to see because these areas desperately need to see it. you just don't want too much in a very short period of time, especially when concerning all of these different fire areas, because those burn scars then become targets for mudslides, landslides, debris flows, things like that during heavy rain. so here's a look at the six that we have that are in and around the los angeles area. none of which, by the way, are at 100% containment. we also have several farther south, a little bit closer near the san diego area. all of those right now, 0% contained. when we look at the winds, we do still have some gusty winds this morning, several of them in the teens and even the lower 20s. that's why you still have this red flag warning. and this is valid until 10 a.m. pacific time on friday, because you are still expected to get those gus

let's get to our meteorologist, allison chinchar with more on this. allison. good morning and good morning. >> and i can confirm it is actually snowing outside of our downtown atlanta office. i ran out just before the commercial break to go take a look. and it is snowing in several places, pretty much most of the state of tennessee. you've got some heavy snow coming down across arkansas and missouri right now. and yes, even portions of northern georgia, northern alabama and mississippi. now rain is on the southern end. and as it starts to warm up here, sun coming up, you're going to see more of this start to transition more into a wintry mix where you get that sleet. the freezing rain and even rain mixing in atlanta sitting right at 32 degrees right now 29 in birmingham, 30 degrees in memphis. now we talked about as it warms up, you're going to see that transition more over to ice and sleet. and some of these areas are looking at pretty significant ice accumulations as we go through the day saturday. some of these areas a quarter of an inch maybe possibly as m

with a closer look, here's cnn meteorologist allison chinchar. the inauguration is set for monday in washington, d.c., and it is expected to be bitter cold. >> the high temperature only likely making it up to 25 degrees when you factor in that northwest wind, it is going to feel like it is only in the single digits. this would make it the coldest inauguration since ronald reagan's second inauguration back in 1985, when the temperature was only in the single digits. now all of this cold air is coming in behind the cold front that's expected to bring rain and snow along the east coast as we go into the day on sunday. and that cold air is really going to drop. look at minneapolis. these are low temperatures, not the windchill. the temperatures themselves -17 in minneapolis tuesday morning. it's going to get down to 11 degrees tuesday morning in washington, d.c., the high temperatures not much better. even some southern cities like atlanta, for example, is barely going to make it above the freezing mark as we head into the early portion of this week.

cnn's allison chinchar is watching the storm from our weather center. what's going on? yeah. >> so this is going to be a pretty big storm in terms of size. we take a look. right now this is cleveland. again you can see what should be a very sunny day. but it's not. you've got those snow squalls coming in at times very heavy. now one thing to note though, this is from a separate system. this is really just lake effect that has been impacting not just cleveland but several other cities right there along the great lakes. but as we zoom out a little bit farther to the west, you can see the beginnings of what is going to be the next system to take shape. and that's the one that has the really big concerns about big impacts stretching from the rockies all the way over to the atlantic ocean. here you can see the orange, the red color indicating the moderate and even major impacts expected from that blowing snow. visibility could be zero in some spots, very gusty winds, which could lead to trees down and power outages. so a lot of impacts here over the next several days. now on

allison chinchar.hank you. >> just hours after the new president takes office, his his team plans to launch an aggressive slate of executive orders on immigration. >> that is, according to two sources familiar with the discussions. cnn's priscilla alvarez explains who could be affected. >> the executive actions being prepared by president-elect donald trump's team on immigration would amount to a dramatic shift in immigration policy and will affect immigrants nationwide, and likely those around the world. now they fall into three buckets. interior enforcement. so that includes, for example, ice sweeps in major metropolitan areas like denver and chicago and those sanctuary cities. those are jurisdictions that limit cooperation with federal immigration enforcement and areas that the incoming borders are tom homan has often criticized. now, sources tell me that they still plan on focusing on public safety and national security threats. in the course of these sweeps. but if there are others who are encount

cnn's allison chinchar is tracking this truly wicked weather from our weather center. son, what areas right now are of most concern? >> right. so imminently, the biggest concern is going to be across the central plains, as well as portions of the midwest. this is a look at kansas city right now. and it's a little blurry on the right hand side. it's not the camera that's broken. that is a thin layer of ice that has formed on the camera, making it very difficult to see the temperature right there in 21 degrees. now, we talked about this yesterday. there was going to be a thin layer of ice coming down a lot of these places, and then the snow on top of it, making it more dangerous on the roadways because you just can't see that ice. look at some of these numbers coming in several locations. we are talking at least a quarter of an inch of ice that can bring down trees and power lines, not to mention coat the roadways. but you even have colby, kansas getting dangerously close to half an inch of ice. and keep in mind, a lot of these places, it's still coming down. look at this

cnn meteorologist allison chinchar is tracking all of this. so what about those winds? i mean, it's a major culprit, obviously, in all of this, dying down a little bit. is it helpful only to pick back up again? >> we've already actually seen the containment numbers go up. so we know that it has helped at least a little bit. we're hoping they can make even more advancements in the next few hours before they really start to pick up later this afternoon, and especially into the evening, and both today and tomorrow have that elevated and critical threat, not just in los angeles, but you'll notice, even spread out from there, you still have that potential. you look at all of the fires you see here. good news. the lidia fire now finally 100% containment. so having those lower wind speeds certainly help there. the eaton fire has also jumped up in containment numbers. same thing for the kenneth fire. we hope that the others will continue to go up over the next couple of hours. those winds right now still single digits for most of these areas, but that is going to go up as we go

meteorologist allison chinchar back with us. now, where are the greatest threats right now as we see this red flag warning once again rising? >> yeah. that's right. so it's the pink area that you see behind me. this is really where the focus is going to be really for the next 12 hours. and that's where the peak winds are expected to be. those wind gusts 5060 even in some isolated spots as high as 70mph. and this red flag warning is valid from now all the way until 6 p.m. local time in california. and even embedded within that red flag warning, you have these two zones right here. these are being labeled particularly dangerous situations, and that is valid until 3 p.m., because that's really when we will finally start to see some of those winds begin to come back down. you have three of the four fires that are located within that specialized area to you. go back to the last 24 hours. you look at some of these wind gusts. we've measured 74, 61, 60, 50. so we were very lucky that we did not really have a lot of brand new fires star

meteorologist allison chinchar is tracking the snow, ice and severe weather threat stretching more than 1300 miles. well, today begins six days of tributes to the life and legacy of former president jimmy carter. the public observances begin and end where it all started. excuse me. for jimmy carter in rural south georgia. >> we're going to take a live look right now from americus, georgia, right there on your screen where carter lived most of his life. carter's motorcade will travel through nearby plains, georgia, before then traveling to atlanta. there will be a pause for a moment of silence at the capitol, where he once served as state senator and georgia's governor. his body will be brought to the carter center, then in atlanta, where flowers and cards have been left since his death. it will then be moved to washington ahead of a state funeral on thursday. >> mr. carter, a democrat, served one term as the 39th president from 1977 to 1981. he became the oldest living former president when he surpassed the record held by the late george h.w. bush in march of 2019. carter died on sunday

cnn meteorologist allison chinchar is here with the latest on what is expected to be the coldest inauguration in 40 years. >> the cold in d.c. on monday is not just going to be your average winter temperatures. it is going to be dangerously cold. the afternoon high temperature monday is only expected to get up to 25. that wind chill is going to feel more like nine degrees at the time when all of these people will be out for inauguration festivities. this makes it the coldest inauguration to take place since ronald reagan's second one back in 1985, when the temperature was only seven degrees outside. now, all of this cold air is coming behind this cold front. it's going to bring rain and snow, but behind it, that's where that significant cold air is really going to come down from. take a look at this. these are morning low temperatures, not wind chill. the actual temperature -17 in minneapolis on tuesday morning d.c. looking at 11 degrees. the high temperatures the next few days. not all that better. in fact, even southern cities like atlanta are really going to struggle to even get above the

let's get to meteorologist allison chinchar with more on this. n, good morning. >> and good morning. yes, we've got a lot of active fires to talk about in two separate regions of california. here you can see this is in and around the los angeles area. you've got six particular fires here, none of which are back up to 100% containment. so that is certainly something we are going to have to keep a close eye on. now, if we head a little bit farther down to the south, now down near san diego, you also have several fires here. all of these three, however, are at 0% containment. now the winds are expected to improve as we go through the day today. so that is some good news, especially for the firefighters. right now. you still have a couple that are in like the teens and even the low 20 mile per hour range. and that is expected because we do still have the red flag warning up until 10 a.m. pacific time this morning. we could still have some of those winds around 40mph on the northern side, up to 60mph on the southern side. but that goes away by this aft

let's get to our meteorologist, allison chinchar, with more on this. allison.ood morning and good morning. >> yes, the big concern is that those winds are going to continue to go back up, in some cases peaking tuesday and wednesday. so this is going to be another prolonged event. you're looking at those sustained winds for this red flag warning area 20 to 30mph. but those wind gusts could be anywhere between 45 to 70 miles an hour. now, that's not as bad as we saw last week. of the 80 to 100mph. but keep in mind that the wind direction is going to be a little bit different. it's going to be more of an easterly flow. so these winds will end up going into some areas that did not see those incredibly strong winds from last week. you have not only the elevated and critical, but we now have an extreme fire weather risk for today and tomorrow and all of these areas. it's mostly in the northern suburbs, but even los angeles still in those elevated to critical fire weather areas. when we look at those wind gusts, they are gradually going to tick back up in the 20, 30,

. >> joining me now is allison chinchar. son, you are in our weather center, and i know that you are seeing. scientifically what officials are feeling on the ground there about conditions, which is that it's impossible for them to contain. and it could get worse, not only with the fire spreading, but because of the winds and the dryness continuing to spread these fires even further than they already are. >> yeah, the wind is really been the key because i mean, we've both heard, you know, in some of these press conferences, you know, they had to they had to bring the planes down. >> they wouldn't allow the planes to go up to, to deal with firefighting methods, because the winds were simply too strong. and you need those firefighting planes out there. they help make a huge difference in combating these fires and help bringing those containment numbers up. so the fact that we haven't really been able to have them up there, that has been a huge disadvantage in fighting these particular fires. and it's not just one, it's four. you

today i want to talk more about those winds with cnn's allison chinchar, who's in the cnn weather center for us. so, allison, i mean, what does the forecast look like at this point, especially in regards to wind? >> right. so it looks like, omar, we're going to start to see those winds begin to pick up later on today. and the really the peak of these winds, at least this next event is going to be tuesday and wednesday of this week. so you have the wind advisories in place. that is mostly for today. those wind gusts up around 50 to 55mph. then starting at 4 a.m. tomorrow, you have this high wind warning in that dark red color you see there. now we're talking those wind gusts of 60 to 70mph in some of these areas. and that is concerning. now it's not just the wind, but it's also taking into account the very dry air. so when you combine the two, they've issued these red flag warnings for those. and again this is the concern again not just the winds but also the dry air. and embedded within that red flag warning there are three highlighted. these black circles you see here, those are conside

so let's go to allison chinchar in the weather center. allison, what is the forecast right now for these winds? >> yeah, we are expected to get above that threshold that you just mentioned. we're not there right now. so the good news is those firefighters can still hurry up and get a little bit more of those containment numbers up until we reach those levels. but we are anticipating to get to a 30, 40, even 50 mile per hour wind gusts in the next 24 hours. you've got the critical and elevated fire risk for the rest of the day today, but also into monday. and that does include the city of los angeles. but a lot of the surrounding areas to where they're also going to be experiencing some of these really strong winds. you can see through the overnight more of those 20, 30 and 40 mile per hour winds are expected to jump back up. it could even reach as high as 50 to 60mph in some spots. as we go through tuesday and even wednesday of this week. so this is not going to be a short term event. we are going to continue to see these high winds, at le

let's get the latest from cnn meteorologist allison chinchar, who's in the weather center. allison, what can you tell us? >> right. so there is some good news, and that is that we do expect these winds to start coming back down in the next 24 hours. but as that gentleman pointed out, it's all relative. you look at some of these numbers 80, 90, 100 mile per hour winds. even if you cut those in half, you're still talking 40 to 50mph, which is still plenty to be able to continue to spread the fires that are already on the ground. now, when we talk about those fires, we are talking about four specific ones the eaton fire, the hurst fire, woodley and palisades. now, for those who are not familiar with this area, we've put some kind of maybe some things that you would recognize, say, like the hollywood sign, dodger stadium, the rose bowl, stadium things. so it kind of gives you some perspective on where these fires are located. now, the palisades fire specifically, this one has really grown in size. so has the eaton fire in the last 24 hours. this red color here shows you the spre

and cnn meteorologist allison chinchar has been tracking the winds, which is their their incredible fear. i mean, allison, they are racing against time. they are racing against the wind to try to control this when they know the winds are going to come. so what exactly is the forecast here? >> all right. so the forecast is just that we've got a very narrow window right now where these winds are still on the low side. but they are going to pick back up. so it is a race against the clock. you can see the forecast for not just today but also tomorrow. you have those elevated and critical fire threats, not just in l.a. proper, but again look at all of these areas that surround it that have the potential for those fires as well. you look at the scope of all of these where they are located. the good news is the containment numbers have gone up in the last 24 hours. so having those lower wind speeds has helped the firefighters lidia fire now up to 100% containment. eaton fire increasing significantly. kenneth fire increasing significantly. so we are seeing those improvements and we will still ha

. >> cnn's allison chinchar is tracking this one for us. >> she joins us now. >> and, allison, what are you seeing in terms of the wind, in terms of what they're up against and what the next few hours look like? >> right. so they're going to have a very short window for the firefighters to really be able to make some huge advancements in those containment numbers, because while things will start to get better, they go right back to being worse on the back half of the weekend. so let's take a look for today. you have an elevated risk around the l.a. area. slightly higher critical fire threat a little bit farther south by saturday. just a very small elevated risk area. but then sunday we start to see those winds pick back up. and especially on tuesday, looking at those winds to really creep back up. so here's a look at all the fires. the white that you see here. those are the winds and the direction in which they're coming from. so for the bulk of the day it's going to be really a north and north based wind. but it will start to shift. it will go to the east, it will go to the west. and t

let's get the very latest on that from cnn's meteorologist allison chinchar. she's standing by with more on this. what? what are you seeing with this? with the fires, with the winds? where this what what the forecast looks like, right. >> so the forecast does still include those high winds for today. they get a little bit weaker as we go into friday. and then finally maybe some rain chances as we get into the weekend. but we've got the short term concerns here. you can see the hughes fire that just exploded yesterday. this is just to the very far northwest of los angeles. this the second fire that also began to develop. this is just to the northwest, very, very close to los angeles. here you can see over that highway, you can see the sparks off in the distance. we have five different fires that we are keeping a close eye on, none of which at this point in time are at 100% containment. the conditions today are going to make it a little bit more difficult for those firefighters. look, you can see already we've got some wind gusts up around 60 to 70mph. in some p

cnn meteorologist allison chinchar joins us now. you know, when it's this cold, it's not just uncomfortable, it's dangerous. >> and i think that's kind of the key was this wasn't just something that people could bundle up a little bit more for. this started to get to the point of safety concerns, which is why they were planning to move it again. you look at some of these temperatures that we're talking about 25 degrees. is that the warmest? it is going to feel in d.c. on monday. and again, you're talking like with that wind chill about ten degrees. so it is going to be bitter cold out there. not to mention you're going to have a wind with some of those components too. so as we take a look, yes, as victor mentioned, this will be the coldest since reagan's second inauguration. single digits at the time. so again, this is going to be bitter cold now where all that cold air is coming from, it's coming from behind this cold front. so once this front slides through, all of this extremely cold air is what's going to slide into place. look

. >> cnn's allison chinchar is tracking all of this for us. so what are you seeing in the forecast?>> right. >> so the good news is there's going to be rain, which we've been talking about for weeks, that we desperately needed. the unfortunate part is for some areas, it might be too much rain in a short period of time. and that's where other problems start to factor in. so you can see from behind me, we're already starting to get some of that moisture filling in across portions of central california. and gradually this system is going to start to slide back down into southern california. as we go through the day today, really starting to push a lot of that moisture into the areas where the fires are. now, with that, as that comes in, you're still going to have some gusty winds. in some areas, it will be more of an onshore flow. so it's going to have a little bit more moisture in it than the santa ana with very dry winds are, but still could see some of those winds 20, 30, 40mph. the hope is they don't make the fires worse. before we finally get some of those rain showers to come in.

let's get the very latest on that from cnn's allison chinchar. she's tracking this one for us. what is the latest wind forecast that you're seeing for today? >> right. so when you take a look at these numbers, it's kind of astonishing how high we still expect to get, even knowing how high they were last week. you've got wind advisories already in place. that's the orange color you see here on the map. and i want to emphasize it's underneath this darker red color here as well. it's just buried underneath it. you have gusts of 55mph up to that point. at some point today then starting tomorrow, beginning at 4 a.m. tuesday, we transition to the high wind warning that is the dark red color, because tuesday and wednesday those wind gusts could be 60, even 70mph. and in some cases it's going to be impacting other areas that did not have those high of winds last week, save for ventura, for example. that was largely kind of a little bit away from some of those strongest winds of the 80 to 100mph last week. so you'll see looking not only today but also tomorrow, we have several areas und
