we were in crab cove in almeida. other places are the marina and hayward shoreline.see here the water looks pretty clear, no evidence of the gray goo--like sick stance that sickened and killed 20 birds. 69 birds were injured. there's a lot of seabirds on the water, there's a beautiful one there. looks like some sort of pelican. but 20 of them have died because of this gray goo-like substance. they are being cared for, the ones that survived, 69 others being cared for at the international bird rescue center in fairfield. we have these pictures to show you of the birds being cared for out there. photos show gray goo that covered their feathers. state department of fish and wildlife is trying to figure out exactly what this substance is and where it's coming from. it's enknown at this time. the goo is oily but apparently according to investigators it's not petroleum-based. it has the same effect on the birds though, it covers their feathers, makes them unable to control their own body temperature when in the water. then the birds that die end up dying of hypothermia. pe
