stephanie chuang joining us from almeida.mber of birds turning up covered in this mysterious goo continues to grow. >> reporter: good morning to you both, sam and laura. the thick dense fog that rob and mike have been talking about obscuring the view of the water along the al me almeida shoreline. after days they're getting support from the state after they've already rescued about 250 sick birds and found 50 dead others and they've been going along the shoreline down from almeida to hayward, where we were standing just a few feet away from one dead bird also coated in the mysterious substance yesterday. the marsh and seabirds have been in the unknown thick, sticky substance that strips their feathers leaving them to die of hypothermia. it's not toxic nor oil based but this morning they are set to start investigation into where the goo came from and who might be behind it. >> what this is, what we can do to negate it and if there's a responsible party and go after them for criminal charges if it comes down to that. >> here is

sheriff deputies in almeida county say what started as a chase ended with a crash. a deputy pulled over a white van in hayward just before 3:00 this morning for not having proper plates. but the driver jumped out of the van and ran away. prn the driver was arrested. it's unclear how many people were in the van but we're told they were all taken to the hospital. the original driver who ran away is still on the loose. also new this morning, three members of a family are dead in what police believe was a murder/suicide in modesto. the shooting happened around 9:00 last night. investigators say two men and a woman were shot and killed. the shooter is reportedly among the dead. a fourth victim was taken in the hospital in critical condition. >> the east palo alto department said two of their officers narrowly escaped injury when they were shot at responding to a call. they say two officers were responding to shots fired call when people shot at them. eight people were inside the home and detained but it's unclear if any of them were arrested. >> today people will turn in

people who caught the measles down in southern california and cases confirmed in santa clara county, almeida county and san mateo counties, and some of the folks who caught the extremely contagious virus were nowhere near disney land. the outbreak is considered the worst measles outbreak in california in 15 years. now the california chief epidemiologist who tracks things is discouraging anyone who has not been vaccinated to avoid going to disneyland. the state department of health urging anyone who has not gotten that mmr vaccine which includes measles to avoid visiting dis y disneyland and other crowded places with international travels. if you have the vaccine, you should be fine. however, again, if you have a baby under the age of 6 months, too young to be immuneized, avoid going to disneyland and perhaps airports because of the concentration of international travelers. experts say people without the vaccine are 35 times more likely to contract measles than those who have been vaccinated. >> in 2000 we pretty much eliminated measles and now we are seeing an upswing and it has to do with p

there are three bay area counties with measles cases, santa clara, almeida and san mateo county and thisis considered one of the worst measles outbreaks in california in 15 years. most of the people who got the virus were either not vaccinated or undervaccinated. the measles outbreak that started at disneyland is prompting drastic measures by officials in orange county where disneyland is. they are banning 20 unvaccinated students from a high school there for 21 days, after a student with measles showed up on campus there earlier this month. 21 days being the incubation period for that airborne virus. seems drastic and probably going to perk up the ears of many bay area parents, but consider the fact that people can catch the virus from just being in a room where someone has been, who had the measles two hours before. the virus can live on cold, dry surfaces. experts say that people without the vaccine are 35 times more likely to contract measles than those who have been vaccinated, and as you might know, the bay area is home to more parents than in most places who choose not to vaccinat

we were in crab cove in almeida. other places are the marina and hayward shoreline.see here the water looks pretty clear, no evidence of the gray goo--like sick stance that sickened and killed 20 birds. 69 birds were injured. there's a lot of seabirds on the water, there's a beautiful one there. looks like some sort of pelican. but 20 of them have died because of this gray goo-like substance. they are being cared for, the ones that survived, 69 others being cared for at the international bird rescue center in fairfield. we have these pictures to show you of the birds being cared for out there. photos show gray goo that covered their feathers. state department of fish and wildlife is trying to figure out exactly what this substance is and where it's coming from. it's enknown at this time. the goo is oily but apparently according to investigators it's not petroleum-based. it has the same effect on the birds though, it covers their feathers, makes them unable to control their own body temperature when in the water. then the birds that die end up dying of hypothermia. pe
