we are at altamont pass road. two lane road that runs parallel to 580 on the north side of the altamont pass. you can see what this fire looked like earlier when it was really going a start around 945 last night when a driver called 911 to report that their car caught fire on the side of 580 north near north flynn road. and i believe that would have been in the westbound direction of 580 with that wind. this fire took off. it burned through 400 acres. and these very dry, grassy hillsides. fortunately this is open land, so there are no structures involved. no people were hurt. and the wind and steep terrain. that just is what really made it challenging for firefighters. and again, this is another sign that something as small as a car fire can lead to a much bigger problem, like what you had behind me. but again, this fire is out. it is contained, cal fire and alameda county fire department were out here. it might have been another agency as well, but they know what they're doing. this is not they're unfortunately n

it's burning at altamont pass, just out for more. the flynn fire broke out last night, shutting down part of 580. abc seven news reporter lena howland live near that scene, and lena, the fire grew overnight. >> hey, kumasi. that's right. the fire grew by about 100 acres overnight. according to cal fire. this fire is now about 400 acres. and we can tell you that these firefighters are up against some very, very windy conditions up here right now on the altamont pass. now, while cal fire says the cause is still under investigation, the initial report from chp is a car caught fire in the westbound direction, and the flames then spread to the grass. caltrans reported the car fire around 945 last night. luckily everyone got out of the car safely. this is happening near the westbound side of 580 at flynn road, just outside of livermore. fire officials said. the fire was wind driven last night, and the terrain up here in the altamont made it difficult for fire crews to access. despite that, cal fire said firefighters are making good progres

we're going to start on the altamont pass.we know that typically the traffic along the altamont pass here at 630 is slow, but it's made even slower because of the flynn fire, which sparked overnight. you can see speeds down to ten miles per hour. still, a siglar was lifted at around three this morning. and even more promising news all westbound lanes are open on 580 between grantline and north flynn road. however altamont pass road is still closed at grantline to carroll road and at greenville because of this fire. we do also want to get to san leandro really quickly. westbound 580 before 1/50 avenue, a car is on fire, two lanes are blocked. there. you'll notice fire crews also on scene kumasi. >> thanks, amanda. now to the park fire near chico. the size of that fire has grown significantly to more than 164,000 acres. and it's just 3% contained. an arson suspect has been arrested, accused of pushing his burning car over an embankment. abc news reporter andrea fujii has more on the suspect and the evacuations this morning. >> a

now the altamont pass the temperatures. yeah, they were hot as well but not as hot are watching more of a westerly component to the wind. but, you know, the altamont pass some of those winds gusting over 20 miles per hour pushing toward the west. well, one good sign, though, is that we are getting more of a westerly component to the wind. and that being said, well, that will bring with it more moisture. of course, a lake county. we've got fires burning there. this one of the acorn fire, they appear to have a handle on that. continuing around that area. of course, we'll have more on that. the rest of weather coming up and a few minutes. guys, back to you. >> lawrence, thank you for a little bit more on the flynn fire. we're now joined on the phone by chelsea burkett with cal fire, a santa clara chelsea. what can you tell us? i know this is near 5.80, there in livermore. this really exploded kind of quickly. >> yeah, the fire is about 100 acres right now. we have multiple ground resources that scene actively fighting the fire

and specifically across the interior east bay, out towards the altamont pass. a few power safety shut off areas include this area east of livermore, as those wind speeds, the gusts will be between 30 to 40mph overnight, with some dry conditions around the hills now moving forward, we do have a cooler day ahead for tomorrow as that sea breeze continues to keep things mild for the weekend. but just around the corner, the return to more heat heat advisories back on the map starting monday, and an excessive heat warning for the interior east bay as temperatures climb back above 100 degrees, the countdown to the next round of heat on the way to the bay area coming up in the forecast in about ten minutes. sounds good rob, thank you. and that fire danger is exactly why power is still off for hundreds in the east bay after pg&e began a safety shut off today. this is a look at the outage map. right now you see the shut offs highlighted in pink between livermore and tracee south of brentwood. right now, the company's crews are patrolling lines to make sure nothing is dam

along 580 this morning, if you are going westbound 580 out of tracy, working your way into the altamont pass, a lot of activity, we will get to this later in the show but there is a fire burning just east of the freeway, this is the altamont pass road area that is completely shut down . they do have a traffic alert in place. the main lines of 580 are open right now, traffic is moving although a little bit slow coming out of tracy getting onto 580, you can see that as we take a look at those sensors, down to about eight miles per hour in some spots, likely due to the smoke, at one point the freeway was completely shut down. there is a lot of activity just off to the side so keep that in mind. >>> a developing story following the executive order to clear homeless encampment statewide, this comes on the heels of the supreme court's decision last month granting local leaders all over the country to remove homeless people from their streets. but where do they go? before the order, encampments could only be cleared if the city had beds to house the homeless. that went away with the executive order

through the evening hours and we've got another fire that we've been watching to this one of the altamont pass that will continue to burn similar circumstance that was started last night in the middle of the night. but now you're getting a strong westerly winds that onshore breeze that will fan the flames of that fire. so you got to be careful that one as well. now here's the forecast for some the winds as we take you through the night to see some 20 and 30 mile an hour gusts as we head through the night tonight. that's not what i wanted to see. those winds not backing off, maybe coming out a little bit of a southerly direction, but staying pretty strong throughout the night. one positive thing, humidity is going to come way up. probably about 80 90% level occasion by tomorrow morning. and that should slow down the progress of the fire. guys, back to you. all right. speaking we're just learning from a governor newsom's office that. >> he has a declared a state of emergency for 3 counties because of wildfires. you plume us butte and tehama counties. obviously that park fire that has just roared

here in the bay area in the east bay, firefighters are making progress on a fire burning on the altamont passit sparked. it started just last night near northland road, just outside of livermore. and at one point it was impacting traffic along i-5. 80 abc7 news reporter lena howland talked with firefighters about the challenges on this fire. >> flames burning out of control on the altamont pass. putting off a bright orange glow from interstate 580 just after 11 thursday night. the flynn fire ballooning in size from ten acres to 500 acres overnight. >> obviously, because the fire started last night, we weren't using aircraft, so the big push was to use those ground resources to implement lines. >> nearly 90 firefighters worked through the night to gain an upper hand. and while steep terrain on the pass didn't help, cal fire says the gusty wind was their biggest challenge. >> it also makes it really hard for firefighters to get good, what we call wet line around the fire, and actually extinguish the fire because if the wind is blowing, it's blowing the fire and it's also blowing the water. that

this is that grant line road in altamont pass. this used to be the old highway and a lot of people take it. >> but they cannot take it as the fire continues to burn. let me show you video. this all started at around 9.45. last night from a car fire. it was the driver who noticed that the car was on fire, call the responders, the first responders. they came out, tried to pounce on it, but not before the dry vegetation in the area caught on fire and it exploded at last check anywhere between 4 500 acres burned. it actually jumped at one point there freeway, causing the chp to come out and shut down both directions of 5.80, both directions moving along now. but it's very slow as far as the containment at last check, 10% contained, which is barely a scratch. but we do know they tend to give updates at around 7 o'clock in the morning. so maybe that number will go up right now. the conditions are quite gusty in the altamont pass, which is not a good sign for firefighters because you can clearly see it is causing a lot of commotion. a lo

we see a little bit of red on the altamont pass. but not too much else. and that's a good sign for this friday commute at 701. let's go back to the headlines and straight to that developing story, some critically dry. >> these winds aren't helping those finer fuels. as you can see here, we have units all the way down from la that that are coming up. and we have more units in route. >> it's a developing story affecting all of california really. this morning, more than 1000 firefighters are fighting the park fire north of chico. the fires tearing through mountains and other hard to reach terrain up in butte and tehama counties. at this point, more than 160,000 acres have burned. the fire is at 3% containment. we don't have an exact number on buildings burned, but our crew there has seen entire neighborhoods leveled where flames rushed through more than 4000 structures are still threatened. cal fire says there are 153 engines working on the fire. this fire is quadrupled in size in just the past 24 hours. this morning. there are mandatory evacuation orders in

altamont pass is the hotspot. early start to the morning commute getting on to 580 from tracy and traffic is busy between grant line and north flynn. >>> well, fire crews are still tackling the massive park fire. it's ballooned to one of the largest in california history in less than a week. >> wow. so sad. 583 square miles burned. to help us get a picture in our minds of how big that is. if we look at the size of san jose and then triple it. that is the size of the park fire. in fact, cal fire says containment has gone from 12% to 14% overnight. so a couple of points better for them and army of firefighters taking credit for that as they fight the flames and progress is slow for the 5 and hundred crew members out there right now. but overnight, their fight means evacuation orders in some areas are now downgraded to evacuation warnings. that's another positive. firefighters with the san francisco fire department are joining in the fight to try to kill the park fire. in fact we got the video of the crew loading up
