um, george altman is, the grandson is called in to help. his grandfather finish his memoirs which deal with the alger hiss case. you're telling the story of alger hiss in this period of american history through the prism of a family why was that why did you make that choice? why did you choose to tell this in a fictional manner as opposed to a nonfiction book about the alger hiss case? well, i'm a great believer that history matters. and that history comes down to us in many different ways through our families, by political culture in which we live. um, and the world that we live in evokes history as the town of edgartown. any wonderful place will evoke its history. so i'm a great believer in that. as a fictional writer, i didn't want to write, if you will, a standard history novel that just talks about the alger hiss trial, the ins and out of the alger hiss trial. what wanted to do was to set the alger hiss case and the trial in the background of family, where the member, the patriarch of that family, one, edward dimmock, was a defender, a
