. -- cnn political commentator alyssa farah griffin -- someone you know well. inside the republican primary electorate right now, how does today's testimony change a view of mike pence? or do you think that was already set because of what happened on january 6th? >> i think the narrative was already set. the wing of the party that showed up on january six that still thinks the election was stolen and that vice president pence had the right to overturn the election, they are never going to be in his camp. what vice president pence would be wise to do, and he's a very savvy political figure -- i think he is key, in my view, and has a real opportunity if he doesn't does end up getting into the race -- is play to the rest of the party. most of us do not think that january 6th was a good thing. we may like the trump policies or some of them, but we don't want trump as a character. naturally, he needs to run it. if he tries to cater to that, vote he will lose, but there is a much broader coalition of republicans would like to see a different direction. >> i will ask

also cnn political commentator alyssa farah griffin and hbo's bomani jones, host of game theory. this case is just so disturbing, so horrific on so many levels. i think that it has been felt from coast to coast of this country, right? the idea. that a black teen goes up to the door to the wrong home and get shot twice. fortunately tonight , he is back at home recovery, which is really incredible. but now the man who shot him has been charged with two felony counts, but you just heard there . laura coates from the prosecutor, saying that there was a racial component in this shooting. why wasn't he also charged with a hate crime? well it seems that in missouri, which is where this is based in hate crime is actually a lesser felony than the two that he was charged with the latter one. the idea of the armed criminal conduct is really an enhancement based on what you're actually using to commit a felony, so i think they're thought there is charged the highest crime possible, even though there's a racial component, because that would put you in a lower rung. but you're absolutely right

i want to bring in my panel lz granderson from the los angeles times, alyssa farah griffin, former white house communications director, our law enforcement analyst john miller and jessica washington from the root great to see all of you, john. this is the third night in a row that we have reported on an innocent mistake like this getting someone shot. what is going on in this country. clearly there is some confusion here, and i mean i don't know how we got here. the question is you know the drumbeat of stories about crime going up? you know, all that goes on and that equals fear. and then there's this weird calculus that you know, gun ownership means being able to prevail over fear. and then there's this even stranger and darker calculus, which is well if i use my gun out of fear that i am therefore justified. and it is becoming harder and harder to explain these incidents away. um, except for kind of looking at this phenomenon because we have three kinds of weird gun violence. we have a regular crime guns, criminals using guns to commit crime. we can talk about that. i know my way aroun
