abc 7 news reporter alyssa harrington is live one block from the fire many. >> reporter: the smoke pushed people out of the neighborhood, police have taped off mission street, some people coming home, hoping to chic on their building are being told they have to stay out. you can see this is still an active fire and smoke is zrifting west into several neighborhoods making it hard for people to breathe. i'm seeing quite a few people wearing masks. the five alarm fire is burning in a busy area of san francisco's mission district. there are apartments, shops and homes and really almost no space in between buildings. firefighters have evacuated people who live on bartlett street. they have a different angle to fight the flames. the smoke was making it too hard to breathe. >> i stayed in as long as i could, gathering essential things and my pet, my cat, alerting neighbors so they could come to the building if they weren't there, so they could mostly collect their animals also. and got out of there, because the smoke started getting really heavy. >> i asked firefighters about damage, they say it

alyssa harrington is live at the scene. alyssa? >> reporter: the bomb squad detonated the device and the impact left this hole in the grass across from the high school. it is a foot and a half deep. here is what we know. the shelter in place has been lifted, but authorities were called to a vacant apartment over here on summer street about 9:30. they found what appeared to be a homemade explosive device. they were a couple of road flares taped together. residents near the high school were ordered to shelter in place, lock their doors and windows. the walnut creek bomb squad moved the device to this area away from homes and exploded it. nobody was hurt. no arrests have been made, but the investigation is on going. live in pittsburgh, alyssa harrington, abc7 news. >> thank you. >>> developing news in san francisco, police say a bicyclist is badly hurt after being hit by a car just within the last hour. it happened on the embarcadero near hair ri son street. police are on the scene looking for clues. no word at this point on the injur

alyssa harrington joins us live with more on their arrest. alyssa? >> reporter: i'm in the parking lot behind bright cleaners, one of the places where police and firefighters responded early sunday morning for one of those fires. you can see there is also several security cameras out here and what they recorded helped police track down the people they believe are responsible. video captured on a surveillance camera outside jim's coffee shop shows a man lurking in the back parking lot looking into the windows of bright cleaners on park street in downtown alameda. five minutes later, flames erupted in the same spot, ripping through the dry cleaner's and delivery van. the fire gutting the business and a restaurant next door. >> it's a real mess and it's too bad something like this happened here. >> i dropped some clothes off. i was wondering if they will have a sign up, you know, how do you put in a claim for my clothes. >> reporter: police arrested 22-year-old andrew gutierrez, a transient who frequents the area and 27-year-old steven peterson, who liv

turning now to the napa recovery effort, people are coming together to rebuild spiritually as alyssa harringtonsome people are seeking comfort at church. >> this is a united methodist church in napa. badly damaged by the 6.0 earthquake. it has been red tagged, determined to be unsafe and in need of major repairs. but sunday morning service went on. members traveled a mile and a half across town to the seventh day adventist church. pastor marvin ray agreed to invite methodists in so they can continue sunday service until reconstruction. >> we worship on saturday. they worship on sunday. we were the only church in town available. it seemed natural. >> methodists were humbled by the gesture. >> it is beyond words. it is such a gift. they have been just open-ended about it. as long as we need it. >> it could take a year and cost more than $1 million to fully repair the nearly 100-year-old methodist church. among the damage a mangled pipe organ and the building's face is leaning toward the street. they are lending their space out for free. >> it is so nice of people to just donate things like that.
